"Über den Wolken muss die Freiheit wohl grenzenlos sein...", dieser Songtext von Reinhard Mey kam mir in den Sinn, als ich an einem Abend, etwa zwei Stunden vor der Dämmerung, Zeuge wurde, wie ein riesiger Heißluftballon für seinen Start vorbereitet wurde. Die Sonne stand noch am Himmel, aber es lag bereits eine gewisse Ruhe in der Luft, während die Crew den Ballon startklar machte. ‘Above the clouds, freedom must be boundless...’, this song lyric by Reinhard Mey came to mind when I witnessed a huge hot air balloon being prepared for take-off one evening, about two hours before dusk. The sun was still in the sky, but there was already a certain calm in the air as the crew prepared the balloon for take-off. It was a magical moment that I captured with my camera, even though I didn't take to the skies myself my feet stayed firmly on the ground.

She was happy to do anything, even in the vicinity of the huge burners that blew hot air into the balloon. These mighty flames, which are hard to ignore at close range, burned loudly and warmed the air while the crew worked calmly and routinely. I marvelled at the courage and determination it took to move right next to these burners and get the balloon ready for ascent.

The freedom that a balloon flight promises is fascinating. But for me, the freedom on the ground is also significant. It was enough to witness the launch, to see the balloon slowly rise and get smaller and smaller as it conquered the sky. Maybe one day I will fly with it, but that evening it was enough to capture the scene through the lens and feel the magic of the moment.
