If you follow my travel posts, you are aware of the Czech attitude towards mountains. We simply love them. Regardless of the season – we could spend weeks hiking, biking, or skiing. We also dress like we’re about to spend a week somewhere in the wilderness, bivouacking at least half of the nights, even If we just take the underground, which my Spanish girlfriend constantly mocks. Yet, that’s a completely different story. It’s winter time, and thus the skiing season. We were cross-country skiing in the Šumava Mountains a few weeks ago, and last weekend, the downhill skiing time finally came. Since the Czech mountains wouldn’t really satisfy you once you learn to ski, we went to the Alps. To Schladming, Austria.
The Alps are the best mountains for downhill skiing in Europe. They stretch over several countries, but you wouldn’t be wrong to choose any of them. I’d have preferred to go to Italy myself, but my girlfriend wasn’t sure if she’d like to ski for a week, so we opted out for five days somewhere in Austria since it is closer. I looked for a nice hotel with a sauna within reasonable driving distance of Prague. It may not look like it, but skiing is very physically demanding, so it could be pleasant to end up your icy-cold day in the sauna if you are into it.
Anyways, my post shall be about the mountains and slopes rather than the hotel. Schladming hosts FIS world championship competitions so you can ski down the same slope the best skiers do. You’d hardly avoid the Planai Stadium as you can take a gondola that would take you to the peak. Schladming is 750 m (2,500 ft) above sea level, while you usually ski in about 1,500 to 2,000 m (5,000 to 6,500 ft), where the snow conditions are substantially better.
Sledujete-li mé posty z poslední doby, víte, že se T. před pár týdny na Šumavě naučila docela slušně na běžkách. A teď přišla řada na sjezdovky. Párkrát už na nich stála, ale teď jsme se rozhodli vyrazit na delší dobu do Alp. Nakonec si ještě netroufala na celý týden, takže jsme skončili na pět dní v Rakousku, konkrétně ve Schladmingu.
Myslím, že české hory na sjezdové lyžování nejsou to pravé ořechové. Poměr cena/výkon mizerný, a pokud jste alespoň trošku slušný lyžař, žádné naše středisko vás nebude bavit víc než jeden, maximálně dva dny. A i motivovaný začátečník jako je T. si Alpy užije mnohem lépe. Schladming je pár hodin autem od Prahy a našel jsem v něm fajn hotel se saunou.
Ale o hotelu se mi psát nechce, pojďme na svah. Ve Schladmingu se konají závody světového poháru, takže si můžete sjet i opravdu těžké černé sjezdovky. Cíl je Planai Stadium, který těžko minete, protože odtud jezdí kabinková lanovka nahoru na Planai. Schladming je asi 750 metrů nad mořem, ale lyžuje se někde kolem 1 500 až 2 000 metrů vysoko, kde jsou lepší sněhové podmínky.

The ski resort consists of six mountains, which are interconnected either by slopes and lifts or free ski bus lines. If you're skilled enough you could easily go down all the slopes (230 km / 140 miles) within a week. My girlfriend was still learning (winter sports are not popular among Spaniards), so we only stayed on two mountains – Planai and Hauser Kaibling. Středisko se skládá ze šesti hor, které jsou propojeny sjezdovkami a vleky nebo bezplatnými linkami skibusu. Když umíte lyžovat, celkem v pohodě si během týdne sjedete všechny sjezdovky (je jich na 230 kilometrů) v areálu. T. se ještě učila, a tak jsme lyžovali jen na dvou horách, Planai a Hauser Kaibling. On the top
The peaks could be gloomy when it’s cloudy (and snowing) or super-beautiful when the sun is shinnig. We experienced both. Let’s start with the snowy days. By the way, can you see the “sky toilet” in the photo below? It’s not a typo; see the next photo.
Na vrcholcích to může vypadat ponuře, to když je zataženo (a sněží), nebo super-fotogenicky, když svítí sluníčko. My zažili obojí, ale pojďme začít se zasněženými dny. Mimochodem, "sky toilet" už jste asi včera viděli, což?

Ale raději samozřejmě mám, když svítí sluníčko. Je to opravdu rozdíl.
Schihüttes
Schihüttes ("snow hutts") serve drinks and dishes. Some of them also offer accomodation but they are usually super-expensive.
Horské chaty jsou stejné jako u nás, najíte s v nich, občerstvíte, a v některých se můžete i ubytovat. Ale jsou vesměs hodně drahé.
