Facts about the market
The Aachen Christmas Market in 2023 is a blend of tradition and unique charm, set in the historical and spa city of Aachen, Germany. It’s known for its picturesque setting in the Old Town, lit up with festive decorations and quaint bakeries. As a traditional German market, it boasts a mixture of German, Belgian, Dutch, and French influences, offering various traditional and foreign specialty products. The market is especially magical at night, described as cozy and almost storybook-like. Visitors are recommended to try Aachener Printen, a local spiced Christmas cookie, and to bring cash for purchases
Hot drinks for cold days
We spend some time with hot chocolate, hot red wine with rum and some other hot drinks from the pots they serve.
Typical drinks at German Christmas markets like Aachen's include Glühwein (mulled wine), Eierpunsch (egg punch), and hot chocolate. These warm beverages are especially popular for sipping while strolling through the festive market stalls. Glühwein is particularly iconic, often served in collectible mugs.
Around the cathedral
The Aachen Cathedral, known as the Imperial Cathedral, was built by Emperor Charlemagne in the late 8th century. It's famed as one of Europe's oldest cathedrals and was the first German site to be UNESCO-listed. The cathedral is renowned for its Palatine Chapel, a masterpiece of Carolingian architecture, and for its octagonal core. It served as the coronation church for German kings and queens for 600 years. The cathedral holds significant relics, attracting thousands of pilgrims. Its rich history is reflected in the Gothic, Carolingian, and Ottonian design elements, making it a symbol of Western Christian art.

Empty drinks
"Öcherpunsch" is a local variation of punch often found at the Aachen Christmas Market. It's a warm, spiced beverage similar to Glühwein (mulled wine) but unique to Aachen, known colloquially as "Öcher" for its residents. This drink is a festive favorite, offering a taste of local tradition and warmth during the holiday season.
