When the Sakura Rain Down ~ Spring in Japan

A rain of cherry blossom petals.

I both love and hate this time of the season. Love because there is no time of the year more beautiful than when the cherry blossoms start raining down. Hate, though, because that means the cherry blossom season is ending and won't be back for another year! At only once a year, we have a limited number of these we can see in a lifetime!

I've heard it called by a few names, but cherry blossom blizzard (sakura fubuki, 桜吹雪) seems to be a pretty common one. When the wind catches the blossoms and carries them away, it really can seem like a blizzard!

And then we have the end-result...

Everything must come to an end. But what an end! We should all hope to have an ending as magnificent as the sakura when they rain down.

Old Issa put it best when he wrote:

さすが花ちるにみれんはなかりけり
sasuga hana chiru ni miren wa nakari keri

the blossoms fall
and scatter
without regret
