Inspiration
Today I would like to show you some results of my projects where a light painting was created by camera rotation.
I found inspiration for this light painting technique in the blogs of
Gunnar Heilmann and Sven Gerard. for example. With this technique, the camera is rotated around its own axis during an exposure. This often yields surprising, kaleidoscopic results. As in the following picture.
It almost looks like looking into a turbine or fireworks.
Heute möchte ich euch einige Ergebnisse meiner Projekte zeigen, bei denen ein Lightpainting durch Kamerarotation entstand. Inspiration zu dieser Lightpainting-Technik fand ich z.B. in den Blogs von Gunnar Heilmann und Sven Gerard. Bei dieser Technik wird die Kamera während einer Belichtung um die eigene Achse gedreht. Dabei erzielt man oft überraschende, kaleidoskopische Ergebnisse. Wie im folgenden Bild.
Es sieht fast aus, wie ein Blick in eine Turbine oder ein Feuerwerk.

Location
The location is actually unspectacular.
The WESTFIELD Donau Zentrum, a shopping center in Vienna.
However, the stairs caught my attention.
Both the lighting of the stairs themselves and the reflection in the copper plates on the ceiling create an interesting structure.
The picture above was taken by rotating the camera in 30° steps. Below you can see the location without rotation.
Die Location ist eigentlich unspektakulär. Das WESTFIELD Donau Zentrum, ein Shoppingcenter in Wien. Die Treppe erregte jedoch meine Aufmerksamkeit. Sowohl die Beleuchtung der Treppe selbst, als auch die Spiegelung in den Kupferplatten an der Decke ergeben eine interessante Struktur.
Durch die Rotation der Kamera in 30° - Schritten entstand die Aufnahme oben. Unten seht ihr die Location ohne Rotation.

The image below shows my rotation tool.
I mounted on my Manfrotto 055 carbon tripod a
LEOFOTO tripod panorama head G2+NP-60. There is a horizontal and vertical adjustment screw on this head. This allows very precise adjustment of the position of the camera. I mounted a Neewer carbon fiber gimbal on it. The part is relatively light. Once set to the camera, this tool is always ready for a quick camera rotation.

Auf mein Manfrotto 055 Carbon Stativ montierte ich einen
LEOFOTO Stativ-Panoramakopf G2+NP-60. Es gibt eine horizontale und vertikale Justageschraube an diesem Kopf. Damit ist eine sehr präzise Justage der Position der Kamera möglich. Darauf montierte ich ein Gimbal aus Kohle Faser der Marke Neewer. Das Teil ist relativ leicht. Einmal für die Kamera justiert, ist dieses Tool jederzeit schnell einsatzbereit für eine Kamerarotation.
More Rotated Images
Last night at 9:30pm I went out again to rotate my camera. The WESTFIELD Donau Zentrum is right in front of my door and is beautifully illuminated in the evening.
So I positioned my tripod, aligned the camera, set it up and... the lights went out just before ten before I could press the shutter button. What a hassle! Only the billboards stayed on. So I recorded at least this one.
I'll start the next attempt a little earlier tonight. Below you can see the result of the rotation without the blue lighting.
Letzte Nacht ging ich um 21:30 Uhr wieder auf die Straße, um meine Kamera rotieren zu lassen. Das WESTFIELD Donau Zentrum befindet sich direkt vor meiner Tür und ist am Abend sehr schön beleuchtet. Also positionierte ich mein Stativ, richtete die Kamera aus, stellte sie ein und... die Beleuchtung wurde kurz vor zehn, bevor ich den Auslöser drücken konnte ausgeschaltet. Was für ein Ärger! Einzig die Werbetafeln blieben noch eingeschaltet. Also nahm ich wenigstens diese noch auf. Den nächsten Versuch werde ich heute Abend etwas früher starten. Unten seht ihr das Ergebnis der Rotation ohne die blaue Beleuchtung.

After the first shot, I walked around the block and found one spot that was lit blue. The position wasn't ideal. Nevertheless, I made an attempt. You can see the result below.
Nach der ersten Aufnahme ging ich um den Block und fand doch noch eine Stelle, die blau beleuchte wurde. Die Position war nicht ideal. Trotzdem startete ich einen Versuch. Das Ergebnis seht ihr unten.

Rotation with Zoom
It gets even more interesting when you rotate and zoom the camera, like in the picture below. Unfortunately, as described above, the conditions there last night were not ideal. Tonight I'll try again at my original location.
Noch interessanter wird es, wenn man die Kamera rotiert und zoomt, wie im Bild unten. Leider waren die Bedingungen dort letzte Nacht, wie oben beschrieben, nicht optimal. Heute Abend starte ich einen erneuten Versuch an meinem ursprünglichen Standort.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?
Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
