In a city built on hills, the view is always both an invitation and a reward.

I'm never sure what I want to hold onto in those moments when I climb to one of the city's best viewpoints — the city itself or the feeling it leaves me with. Probably both at once. The endless terracotta roofs, the narrow streets that look almost toy-like from up here, the warm light washing over the walls.

Lisbon looks especially good this way. Not as separate streets and buildings (though that's its own kind of pleasure), but as a whole — alive, slightly chaotic, stretching toward the water and the horizon.

The higher you manage to climb, the more you just want to stand there and watch.

Lisbon, Portugal.
September, 2017.
