unexpectedly wide ogunohara park: June 20 2024

in this edition of the night walks with the night walker, i started to explore another of the bigger parks within my city.

ogunohara park (尾久の原公園)

this park is located at the northern part of arakawa ward just by the sumida river banks. first opened on june of 1993, this park took advantage of the rich waterside environment of the area. with a total area of a little less than 62 thousand square meters, the park boasts cherry blossoms and

as quoted directly from their website. picture below was also grabbed from their site for daytime reference.

as i went their at night (as part of the night walker series), this view above is totally dark. i passed by this beautifully paved road and at the end of it was the park. my housemate informed that there were lots of joggers in the park even at night, that was the only information i had. (the research above was done on writing day.)

at the entrance, a number of trees will greet you which obstructs a clear view of how wide the park is. just right at the entrance was is this empty stream which turned out to be a splash pool. i laughed a bit when i saw the fish designs on a waterless space which now looked like cooked meals served on a plate. their site mentioned that water will be running on this splash pool from late july till end of august during the summer vacation; as such, it is a popular meeting spot for children to play.

just right at the back is the toilet area just a fit spot for the children playing at the pool who need to relieve themselves. this is actually one of the many things i came to admire about parks here in japan, they all have a toilet. so during my night walks, i usually search for a nearby park when i need to pee, very convenient japan facilities.

just a bit further and i finally saw how wide it was. this map showed that well. i was not ready to see paved pathways, and this made this a jogger's paradise. it is filled with so much spacious fields where you can have a picnic or just play on the grass.

just look at how wide that was. but i was scared to step into it, i initially thought that it was a marshland or a pond. it was so dark, very hard to see a thing. then a couple with large dogs passed by me and played in the field. the dogs' bark echoed and this gave me chills. large dogs make loud noises.

i went back to the jogging path and saw this mother and son tandem. they were so fun to watch. at one point the son pointed out how much more they had to jog, the mother just gave encouraging words to keep going. they were so playful, the son even jumped up to touch the leaves hanging over the path. these must be the sakura trees, of course no more flowers at this point.

then i came across the pond. this guide was showing how deep the water was. don't worry, the pond were fenced so no one would go in. only the troublemaker would dare to go beyond this fence. this must be the habitat of the precious dragonflies and wild birds mentioned on their site. and again, i couldn't see anything for it was night.

if i proceeded, i would have came back to were i came in. i went out at the back side of the park and met the sumida river once again. for the past few days, i have met her on quite a lot of occasions. i am still not sure but it seems that a boardwalk or a pathway was built on the bank for the whole stretch of this river. at least those bordering my city had pathways.

that bridge at the distance was ogu bridge. i have walked over it just two days ago and have written some texts regarding that in my bridges post as follows.

from across, there is this apartment complex which was so good to look at night. it was wide and speckled with different shades of indoor lights. their reflections on the waters made the scene more romantic and memorable. my mind then speculated, those rooms with no lights were probably owned by someone still out on overtime work or someone out to play and have fun.

and this ended my visit to this park, but not my trail for this night walk session. i continued on and passed by yet another park. that would be for the next installment. in total, i have walked 7 km today, and this park is this one marked on my walking trail below.
