Wczoraj miałem wolne, dzień wcześniej przyjechała do nas córka. Jak to często bywa w takich sytuacjach, żona z córką zaplanowały wspólne wyjście na zakupy, a ja w tym czasie miałem czas dla siebie. Odpaliłem więc aplikację AllTrails i wyszukałem odpowiedni szlak do przejścia w niedalekiej odległości od Mons. Mój wybór padł na szlak w formie pętli w pobliżu Montigny-le-Tilleul, zaczynający się nieopodal ruin opactwa Abbaye d'Aulne. To tylko pół godziny jazdy samochodem od Mons, na miejscu bez problemu można znaleźć miejsce do zaparkowania auta.

[ENG] Yesterday I had a day off, the day before our daughter came to visit us. As is often the case in such situations, my wife and daughter had planned to go shopping together and I had some time to myself. So I launched the AllTrails app and searched for a suitable trail not far from Mons. I chose a loop near Montigny-le-Tilleul that starts near the ruins of the Abbaye d'Aulne. It is only half an hour's drive from Mons and there is no problem finding a place to park the car.

Szlak zaczyna się w dolinie rzeki Sambry, ale już od pierwszych metrów wznosi się na wyżynę pobliskich wzniesień. Zaczęło się bardzo ciekawie, bo już po kilku metrach wspinaczki na swojej drodze zobaczyłem trzy sarny. Przywitały się i zanim zdążyłem uwiecznić je na zdjęciu, czmychnęły szybko w zarośla i tyle je widziałem. Później nieco dalej dostrzegłem jeszcze dwie biegnące po zboczu. Pierwsza połowa tego szlaku poprowadzona jest leśnymi ścieżkami, o ile wejście pod górę było szerokie i stosunkowo łatwe, to zejście w dolinę wymagało dużo uwagi i ostrożności, gdzie stawia się stopy.

[ENG] The trail starts in the valley of the Sambre river, but from the first few metres it climbs to the heights of the nearby hills. It started very interestingly because after a few metres of climbing I saw three roe deer on my way. They greeted each other and before I could get a shot of them, they quickly ran off into the undergrowth and that was all I saw of them. Later, a little further on, I saw two more running along the slope. The first half of this trail is on forest tracks and while the climb up the hill was wide and relatively easy, the descent into the valley required a lot of attention and care in where you put your feet.

Po zejściu w dolinę rzeki, dalsza część szlaku wiodła wzdłuż rzeki. Gdyby nie to, że akurat wtedy rozpadało się i cały około trzykilometrowy odcinek pokonałem w deszczu, to byłby to bardzo przyjemny marsz. Sambra wije się przez dolinę Vallée de la Paix. Mnisi, którzy założyli majestatyczne opactwo Aulne, wybrali to miejsce ze względu na spokój i ciszę. Rzeczywiście spacerując po okolicy, można docenić majestat przyrody w całej okazałości.

[ENG] After descending into the river valley, the rest of the walk followed the river. If it hadn't been for the fact that it was raining and I walked the whole three kilometres in the rain, it would have been a very pleasant walk. The Sambre meanders through the Vallée de la Paix. The monks who founded the majestic Aulne Abbey chose this place for its peace and quiet. Indeed, walking around the area you can appreciate the majesty of nature in all its splendour.

Kiedy zbliżałem się do końca szlaku, zauważyłem na drugim brzegu rzeki coś na kształt niewielkiej oranżerii, za chwilę dostrzegłem ich więcej. Później doczytałem, że to wcale nie jest oranżeria, tylko domki Thudi-Nids en bulles, które można wynająć. Cena za noc dla dwóch osób pod gwiazdami nie jest niska, ale zapewne to ciekawe doświadczenie.

[ENG] As I approached the end of the path, I noticed what looked like a small orangery on the other side of the river, and then more. Later I read that they weren't orangeries at all, but huts Thudi-Nids en bulles that you can rent. The price for a night for two under the stars is not cheap, but it's probably an interesting experience.

W okolicach opactwa Aulne przestało padać, zdecydowałem się, więc przyjrzeć z bliska temu co pozostawiła po sobie rewolucja francuska. W tym celu musiałem przejść na drugą stronę rzeki przez śluzę. Okolica jest chętnie odwiedzana nie tylko ze względu na ruiny opactwa, dlatego w jego sąsiedztwie znajduje się kilka restauracji.

[ENG] The rain stopped near Aulne Abbey, so I decided to take a closer look at what the French Revolution had left behind. To get there, I had to cross the river through a lock. The area is popular not only because of the abbey ruins, so there are several restaurants nearby.

Początki opactwa Aulne sięgają połowy VII wieku, w 657 roku założono tu klasztor benedyktynów, dwa wieki później został splądrowany przez Normanów, po tym zdarzeniu na pół wieku klasztor został opuszczony przez mnichów. Dzięki interwencji biskupa Richera z Liège opactwo się odrodziło. W połowie XII wieku klasztor stał się opactwem cystersów i tak już zostanie do jego końca w 1794 roku. W najlepszych latach swojej świetności Aulne staje się jednym z najpotężniejszych opactw w księstwie Liège.

[ENG] The origins of Aulne Abbey date back to the middle of the 7th century, when a Benedictine monastery was founded here in 657. Two centuries later, it was plundered by the Normans and the monks abandoned it for half a century. Thanks to the intervention of Bishop Richer of Liège, the abbey was reborn. In the middle of the 12th century, the monastery became a Cistercian abbey and remained so until its demise in 1794. At its height, Aulne was one of the most powerful abbeys in the Principality of Liège.

Mnisi przez kolejne miesiące wracali do Aulne, próbując ocalić to co jeszcze nie zostało zniszczone, przez blisko dwa lata podejmowali też próby odbudowy klasztoru. Jednak ustawa o likwidacji zgromadzeń zakonnych z września 1796 roku, przezwyciężyła nieustępliwość mnichów z Aulne, jedynych w Belgii, którzy chcieli ponownie założyć swój klasztor. Musieli się poddać, pozostałości klasztoru i sąsiedniego gospodarstwa zostały sprzedane prywatnemu gospodarzowi na aukcji.

[ENG] In 1794, the monks of Aulne fled at the news of the arrival of the French revolutionaries, who plundered the abbey for several days, destroying it and burning the library. The monks returned to Aulne in the following months to try to save what had not been destroyed, and for almost two years they tried to rebuild the monastery. However, in September 1796, the law on the suppression of religious congregations overcame the stubbornness of the monks of Aulne, the only ones in Belgium who wanted to rebuild their monastery. They had to give in and the remains of the monastery and the neighbouring farm were auctioned off to a private farmer.

Abbaye d'Aulne to nie jedyny obiekt tego typu w Belgii, niedaleko Brukseli jest jeszcze okazalsze opactwo Villers, które spotkał ten sam los w czasie rewolucji francuskiej. Abbaye de Villers jest moim zdaniem ciekawszym miejscem do zwiedzania, na korzyść Abbaye d'Aulne przemawia natomiast położenie i piękno otaczającej to opactwo przyrody. Chętnie wrócę do Vallée de la Paix na jeszcze jedną pieszą wycieczkę po okolicach Abbaye d'Aulne.

[ENG] The Abbaye d'Aulne is not the only such place in Belgium, not far from Brussels is the even more magnificent Villers Abbey, which suffered the same fate during the French Revolution. In my opinion, the Abbaye de Villers is a more interesting place to visit, but the location and the beauty of the surrounding nature speak in favour of the Abbaye d'Aulne. I would love to return to the Vallée de la Paix for another walk around the Abbaye d'Aulne.
