Today, during our regular evening walk with Bella, we decided to make a larger circle around the city center, but I started shooting when we arrived at European Square.
In contrast to the Christmas atmosphere shown in my last Actifit post a couple of weeks ago, today, the square was way less crowded, and without dozens of booths that were all around.
My attention caught the monument that takes place in the center of the square. It's a cube with the date on it (July 1st, 2013) on the star.
The symbolism of it is the following. Our country (Croatia), especially through sports, is recognized by its characteristic red cubes. They are also part of our national coat of arms, which is also on our flag. ๐ญ๐ท That's why the cube.
The date represents the day when Croatia became a full member of the European Union, and the star means that the country became one of the European stars.
How happy we really were about it that's another pair of shoes. But the funny coincidence of my today's shooting was the "SALE" sign reflecting from the window of the shop across.
This unplanned photography art installation represents way better how we (the people, not our politicians) felt about it. We were on sale, and that day, we were sold.
From there, we continued our walk towards the main square.
The popular Manda's well, during Christmas time decorated as Advent's wreath, it was in its regular state.
A couple of meters from there, on the central northern side of the square, at the entrance of Harmica passage, a couple of musicians were playing.
In front of them, almost at the center of the square, proudly stood the monument to ban Josip Jelacic (Jelaฤiฤ).
In 1947, literarly overnight, the monument was disassembled and removed from the square by the ex-Yugoslavian communists.
Luckily, the monument was saved from complete destruction by Dr. Antun Bauer, who kept it parts hidden in the basement of the Zagreb's Glyptotheque.
So, after the declaration of Croatia's independence, the monument was restored and placed back on the square in 1990.
