Childhood trauma

One of the most dangerous exposures for the developing brain is adverse childhood experiences, also known as ACEs.

ACEs are traumatic events experienced in childhood such as abuse, neglect, and severe household dysfunction and they can have a significant impact on the developing brain. Research has shown that exposure to ACEs can literally ALTER the structure and development of the brain, leading to changes in areas such as the hippocampus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex that are involved in regulating emotions, stress, and memory. These changes can affect a person's ability to process information, form healthy relationships, and cope with stress, which in turn can lead to a range of negative outcomes such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders.

We can beat this problem by preventing ACEs from occurring in the first place. For those who have experienced ACEs, therapy has been shown to help reduce symptoms of mental health conditions and improve overall well being.

I'll be making posts on how to heal from adverse childhood experiences and not repeat the same cycle with your children
