Greetings community! Hoping that you are all well today, I wanted to share with you a great moment that only happens once in a lifetime, and that is when one of our students in the laboratory manages to complete his graduate studies by defending his doctoral thesis. So join me to tell you about this great day.
Saludos comunidad! Esperando que se encuentren bien el día de hoy he querido compartirles un gran momento que solo se repite una vez en la vida, y es cuando uno de nuestros estudiantes en el laboratorio logra culminar sus estudios de postgrado a través de la defensa de su tesis doctoral. Así que acompáñame para relatarte como fue este grandioso día.

We left the center of Caracas towards the Ciudad Universitaria and of course I could not forget to share with you the beautiful view of the valley of Caracas from the window of my apartment. A view of Fuerzas Armadas Avenue to the north will always give us the imposing view of the Ávila hill and to the south our exit to Ciudad Universitaria.
Salimos del centro de Caracas hacia la Ciudad Universitaria y por supuesto no podía dejar de compartir con ustedes la hermosa vista del valle de Caracas desde la ventana de mi apartamento. Una vista de la Avenida Fuerzas Armadas al norte, siempre tendremos la imponente vista del cerro Ávila y al sur nuestra salida a Ciudad Universitaria.

Soon after we arrived at the Faculty of Sciences, my beloved faculty. But this is not where the thesis defense will be, but before arriving there I wanted to take a couple of photos of the restored spaces of my Faculty.
Al poco tiempo llegamos a la Facultad de Ciencias, mi amada facultad. Pero no es aquí donde será la defensa de tesis, antes de llegar alli quise tomar un par de fotos de los espacios restaurados de mi Facultad.
From Science to Dentistry: The path of interdisciplinarity/De Ciencias a Odontología: El camino de la interdisciplinariedad
In a previous post I highlighted the peculiarity that the city of Caracas had with Nature, an eternal struggle of urbanity to predominate and the resistance of flora to not let itself be overwhelmed. But here in Sciences the structures seem to be in symbiosis with nature, the recently built teaching laboratories are slowly becoming surrounded by grass and leafy trees.
En un post anterior destacaba la peculiaridad que tenía la ciudad de Caracas con la Naturaleza, una eterna lucha de la urbanidad por predominar y la resistencia de la flora por no dejarse avasallar. Pero aquí en Ciencias las estructuras parecen estar en simbiosis con la naturaleza, los laboratorios docentes recientemente construidos ya poco a poco se esta dejando rodear por la hierba y los árboles frondosos.

We then set off, our destination is the auditorium of the Faculty of Dentistry, our neighboring faculty is right next door, but our relationship is much deeper.
Nos pusimos en marcha entonces, nuestro destino es el auditorio de la Facultad de Odontología, es nuestra facultad vecina y esta justo al lado, pero nuestra relación es mucho más profunda.

It turns out that this thesis is an interdisciplinary work between the IBE/Sciences and the Chair of Periodontology at the Faculty of Dentistry where we do a biochemical characterization of markers with predictive value for periodontal diseases. I have travelled from the Faculty of Science to Dentistry countless times while doing this research. But this time we are going to visit these great royal palms one last time to contemplate the culmination of this multidisciplinary initiative.
Resulta que esta tesis es un trabajo interdisciplinario entre el IBE/Ciencias y la Cátedra de Periodoncia en la Facultad de Odontología donde hacemos una caracterización bioquímica de marcadores con valor predictivo para enfermedades periodontales. Fueron incontables la veces que hice el recorrido de la Facultad de Ciencias a Odontología haciendo este trabajo de investigación. Pero esta vez recorremos una última vez estas grandes palmas reales para contemplar la culminación de esta iniciativa multidisciplinaria.

The auditorium of the Faculty of Dentistry is just outside the entrance, this 10-story building if we count the basement was built to house all the disciplines in one building: clinic, surgery and postgraduate specialties such as orthodontics, periodontics and pediatric dentistry - all specialties are in one building! Upon entering we can see the large auditorium, in the image of the center an anxious tutor and in the third image a very nervous and future doctor!
El auditorio de la Facultad de Odontología esta justo a las afueras de la entrada, éste edificio de 10 pisos si contamos el sótano fue construido para albergar todas las disciplinas en un mismo edificio: clínica, cirugía y especialidades de postgrado como ortodoncia, periodoncia y odontopediatría todas las especialidades están en un solo edificio! Al entrar podemos contemplar el gran auditorio, en la imagen del centro a una ansiosa tutora y en la tercera imagen a una muy nerviosa y futura doctora!

The culmination of a long project/La culminación de un largo proyecto
I will not lie to you friends, when our student finished her presentation and defense of the Thesis I could not help but feel a great feeling, it was years of intense work, of undergraduate students who passed, of conferences and advances of results that seeing all that finally materialized made me shed a couple of tears.
No les mentiré amigos, cuando nuestra estudiante termino su exposición y defensa de Tesis no pude evitar sentir un gran sentimiento, fueron años de trabajo intenso, de estudiantes de pregrado que pasaron, de congresos y avances de resultados que ver todo eso concretado finalmente me hizo derramar un par de lagrimas.

After the questions, the jury's evaluation was read, approved and honorable mention! More than deserved for how novel and original this work was. Then came the time to celebrate, one of my favorite moments of these events. We toasted with sparkling Champagne and snacks of tequeños, pizza, ham bread and even mini golfeados!
Después de las preguntas, se leyó la evaluación del jurado, aprobado y mención honorífica! Más que merecido por lo novedoso y original que fue este trabajo. Posteriormente llegó el momento de la celebración, uno de mis momentos favoritos en estos eventos. Brindamos con Champagne espumoso y de aperitivos tequeños, pizza, pan de jamón y hasta mini golfeados!

That's how we ended this celebration with colleagues, collaborators and friends celebrating this great moment. When we finished, dusk reached us, the sun was beginning to set and I didn't want to let the moment pass and I took a couple of photos of the Plaza de los Biólogos, the place where every Biology student begins their career. A beautiful postcard of my Biology School.
Así terminamos, esta celebración con colegas, colaboradores y amigos celebrando este gran momento. Al terminar nos alcanzó el atardecer, el sol se comenzaba a ocultar y no quería dejar pasar el momento y tomé un par de fotos de la Plaza de los Biólogos, el lugar donde todo estudiante de Biología comienza su carrera. Una hermosa postal de mi Escuela de Biología.
