Everyday life in Campeche
Having stayed in Campeche for two months, I was able to see many aspects of the local way of life. Simply going to tourist spots, eating at tourist restaurants, and sleeping in hotels is a good way to spend a vacation, but I think the best part of traveling is experiencing the local way of life.
カンペチェでは2ヶ月も滞在したと言うことで、地元の人たちが営む生活を色々と見ることが出来ました。ただ観光地に行って、観光客向けのレストランで食事をして、ホテルで寝ると言うのもいい休暇の過ごし方ですが、旅行の醍醐味はやっぱり地元の生活の営みを経験することだと思います。
"What do you want to eat?" My friend asked me, and I replied that I wanted to eat nachos, which I used to eat in the dorms when I was a student. The nachos I had in the U.S. were just instant nachos with chips and salsa, but this time my friend made me authentic nachos and chicken soup. Campeche has a very hot chili pepper called habanero. It is really hot and I wanted people to experience this spiciness, so I had them take me to a local supermarket to buy some. This spiciness was better when roasted over an open flame on a gas stove, and when I added it to the chicken soup, it tasted exceptional as well. It was delicious!
「何が食べたい？」と友人に聞かれ、学生時代によく寮で食べたナチョスが食べたいと答えました。アメリカで食べたナチョスは、チップスにサルサをつけて食べるだけの即席ナチョスでしたが、今回は友人が本格的なナチョスと、チキンスープを作ってくれました。カンペチェには、ハバネロという激辛の唐辛子があります。本当に辛くて、この辛さを体験してほしいと思い、地元のスーパーに連れていってもらい購入しました。ガスコンロで直火焼きするとこの香ばしさはまし、それをチキンスープに入れるとこれまた格別な味がしました。おいしかった！
It was the day of a game against my friend's nephew and niece, who are on the local basketball team. We went to the civic gymnasium near the old town to watch the game after waiting for a beer at the bar until the game started.
この時は友人の甥っ子と姪っ子が地元のバスケットボールチームに入っているのですが、その対戦試合の日でした。ゲームが始まるまで、バーでビールを飲んで待ちその後はゲーム観戦をしに旧市街近くの市民体育館に行って試合を観戦しました。
When I got home, it was time for a family get-together. Seeing my friend's children and my good friends and their spouses made me think how nice family is. I also wanted to go back to Campeche someday to experience "family" again.
家に帰ってきてからは一家の団らんの時間です。友人の子供たちや仲のいい友人夫婦を見ていると、家族っていいなぁと思いました。また、「家族」を体験するためにもまたいつかカンペチェに行きたいと思いました。
