জুল ভার্নের ক্যাপ্টেন নিমো চরিত্রটির ২য় অভিযান কাহিনী হচ্ছে সাগর তলে, যার প্রকৃত নাম 'টুয়েন্টি থাউজ্যান্ড লীগস আন্ডার দ্য সী'। এটি তাঁর কল্পবিজ্ঞান কাহিনীর মাঝে অন্যতম।
ঘটনার শুরু হয় যখন নাবিকেরা একটি বিশালাকার অদ্ভুতদর্শন একটি প্রাণী দেখতে পান সাগরে। তিমি হাঙর ভেবে হামলা করে অনেক জাহাজ, কিন্তু অসম্ভব দ্রুতগতির এই অচেনা প্রাণীটি প্রতিবারই পালাতে সক্ষম হয়। একবার একটি জাহজকে আক্রমণ করে সেটি। সেই জাহাজের নিচে এমন সূক্ষ্ম গর্ত তৈরি হয়, যা সম্ভব কোনো ধারালো কিছুর আঘাতেই।
আজ প্রশান্ত মহাসাগরে তো কাল আটলান্টিক মহাসাগরে ছুটে বেড়ায় এটি। নাবিকেরা ধারণা করেন এর দৈর্ঘ্য আনুমানিক ৩০০ ফুট! ডুবোজাহাজও যদি হয় এটি, তাহলে এটি নির্মাণের যে বিশাল খরচ তা বহন করা সম্ভব কেবল কোন ধনী রাষ্ট্রের পক্ষেই। কিন্তু খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা যায় তাদের কেউই জানেন না এটি সম্পর্কে।
এই প্রাণীটি বা যাই হোক না কেন সেটিকে ধরার জন্য অভিযানের আয়োজন করে আমেরিকান নৌবাহিনী। সেই অভিযানে সঙ্গী হবার জন্য ডাক পরে ফরাসি সমুদ্রবিজ্ঞানী পিয়ের এ্যারোনার। সাথে তার বিশ্বস্ত ভৃত্য কনসেইল। জাহাজের আরো লোকদের মাঝে ছিলো ক্যানাডিয়ান দক্ষ হার্পুন নিক্ষেপকারী নেড ল্যান্ড।
কয়েক মাস ধরে বৃথাই সাগর চষে বেড়ায় এ জাহাজটি, কিন্তু কোথাও দেখা মিলে না ওই বিকটদর্শন দানবের। সবাই যখন হাল ছাড়তে বসে, তখন হঠাৎই একদিন এদের সামনে পরে যায় ওই জিনিসটি। জাহাজ থেকে আক্রমন করা হয় ওই জিনিসটির উপর। যেন প্রান বাঁচাতে পালটা আক্রমন করে ওটি। ক্ষতি করে জাহাজটির। গোলমালে পিয়ের, কনসেইল আর নেড পরে যান পানিতে। দেখতে পান ওদের রেখেই ফিরে যাচ্ছে জাহাজ।
বিজ্ঞানী মনে করেন তার মৃত্যু সুনিশ্চিত। কারণ এ বিশাল সাগরের রাজ্যে তিনি একা। পরবর্তীতে দেখা যায়, তিনি একা নন, তাঁকে পরে যেতে দেখে তাঁর ভৃত্যও পানিতে লাফিয়ে পরেছিল এছাড়াও নেডও পানিতে পরে যায়। নেড বলে প্রাণীটির বহিঃখোলস ধাতব নির্মিত, তার হার্পুনেও কিছুই হয় নি সেটির। এসময়ে খেয়াল করেন, দ্বীপের মতো যেটির ওপরে তারা বসে আছেন, সেটি কোনো দ্বীপ নয়।
তারা বুঝতে পারেন, এটি আসলেই একটি ডুবোজাহাজ। যখন সেটি পানির নিচে যেতে থাকে, তারা জীবন রক্ষার তাগিদে বারবার বাড়ি মারতে থাকেন এর ওপরে হাত দিয়ে এবং চিৎকার করতে থাকেন। ফল হয় এর, হ্যাচ খুলে যায়, তাদের ঢুকিয়ে নেয়া হয় এর ভিতরে, বেঁচে যান তারা।
বন্দি দশা শুরু হয় তাদের। ভিতরে যারা আছে, তাদের পোশাক অদ্ভুত, ভাষা অজানা। তাও ক্যাপ্টেনের কাছে তারা তিনজনই বিভিন্ন ভাষায় তাদের অবস্থা বোঝাতে চেষ্টা করেন। কিন্তু ভাবে মনে হয়, যেন কিছুই বোঝে নি ক্যাপ্টেন।
পরে জানা যায় তাঁর নাম ক্যাপ্টেন নিমো। এই ডুবোজাহাজটির নাম নটিলাস। স্থলের আইন যেন তাঁকে স্পর্শ না করতে পারে, তাই তিনি এই সাগরকেই তার আবাস বানিয়েছেন। তাদের অনুমতি দেয়া হয় পুরো ডুবোজাহাজে চলফেরার, কিন্তু উপরের জগতে আর তারা ফিরতে পারবে না।
পিয়ের এ্যারোনার অবাক হয়ে যান এটির আধুনিক যন্ত্রপাতি দেখে। কিন্তু নিমোর অতীত বা আসল পরিচয় তাদের কাছে গোপনই থেকে যায়। তারা সঙ্গী হয়ে যান ক্যাপ্টেন নিমোর এবং অংশ হন নটিলাসের বিভিন্ন অভূতপূর্ব অভিযানের। এই অভিযানগুলোই মূলত এই বইয়ের মূল কাহিনী।
ভাবতে অবাক লাগে সেই ঊনিশ দশকে কত সুন্দরভাবে তিনি ডুবোজাহাজ নিয়ে কাহিনী রচনা করেছেন। বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলের ভৌগোলিক বিবরণ এবং সে স্থানের প্রাণীদের সম্পর্কে দেয়া তথ্য এটিকে দিয়েছে পূর্ণতা। কিশোর-কিশোরীদের জন্য অবশ্যপাঠ্য একটি বই। আর সেবা প্রকাশনীর যে সাবলীল অনুবাদ, সেটি যে বইটিকে প্রাণ দিয়েছে তা বলাই বাহুল্য।
আমি মূলত এটি শুনেছি গল্পকথন by কল্লোল চ্যানেলটিতে। চাইলে কাজের পাশাপাশি আপনিও শুনে ফেলতে পারেন বিশ্ব সাহিত্যের এ অমূল্য রত্নটিকে।

The story started when sailors reported repeatedly seeing a weird huge monstrous thing in the sea. Many ships attacked this assuming it was a whale or a shark. But, it was super fast and could escape every time. Once it attacked a ship. On the lower part of that ship, a hole was created which was very fine and could only achieved if a sharp object hit it.
If it was seen at the Atlantics today then it was seen tomorrow at the Pacific the next day it was seen 20000 miles apart! Sailors calculated its length to be around 300-350 feet. Even if it was a submarine, then only the rich countries would be able to bear the cost, but the rich countries denied knowing anything like this.
Not knowing whether it was a monster or whatever, to know more about it, the US Navy arranged an expedition. There French Oceanographer Pierre Aronnax was invited and his assistant Conseil joined him. Among the many crew of the ship, there was Ned Land, a Canadian Harpooner.
For several months, the ship searched the seas for that thing, but all was in vain. When all were on the verge of giving up, that thing was spotted. They attacked, and that thing also attacked to save itself. The damaged ship was forfeited leaving Aronnax, Conseil, and Ned Land behind. Pierre Aronnax hopelessly saw the ship leaving.
He thought he was going to die alone when Conseil picked him up on something. Conseil jumped seeing Pierre fall. Later they found out Ned Land was also with them. Ned told them the outer part was metal made as his harpoon ricocheted. When the thing they were on started to go down, they figured out that was no island.
They learned that that was a submarine. In the hope of saving their lives, they started hitting and screaming. Finally, the hatch opened and they were taken inside by some men.
Their life as prisoners started. Those inside the submarine were wearing weird dresses and were speaking in some unknown language. All of them tried their best to tell their situation to the captain in different languages, but it seemed he understood nothing.
Later they found out that, the captain understood everything. His name is Captain Nemo. Not liking the rules and laws of the land, he decided to live in the sea. The name of the submarine was Nautilus. They were permitted to move freely inside the submarine, but they would not be able to leave the Nautilus.
Pierre Aronnax was amused seeing the technology used there. But, the history of Nemo is still a mystery. They became members of the Nautilus and were on many adventures with Captain Nemo. These amazing adventures are the main theme of the book.
It amused me, how at the time when the book was written, the writer wrote about a submarine so astonishingly. He mentioned geological details and about living things of those places, which made the book wholesome. It is a must-read classic for the teens.
