though it is not common, occasionally tame elephants board an airplane in india and fly to another country. underway the elephant flies at speeds up to 600 miles per hour. that is roughly 265 meters per second. obviously the elephant is necessarily flying at the same speed of the other passengers and indeed the plane itself.
while at first this may seem totally uninteresting, consider that no elephant under its own power has ever flown faster than a mosquito, which is only about 1.5 mph or 0.65 meters per second!
so next time a mosquito bites you and flies away unhindered console yourself knowing that had it been an elephant it
wouldn't have gotten away so easily
