“Most people think of ice as just the solid that forms in a freezer, but water is far more complex. Because water molecules are connected by hydrogen bonds, they can arrange themselves in many different ways depending on temperature and pressure,” said first author Kim. “This has led to the discovery of more than 20 distinct crystalline phases of ice, from Ice I to Ice XXI, each with unique symmetry, density and bonding patterns" https://www.llnl.gov/article/53621/researchers-discover-entirely-new-phase-icetterns.”

here are some shots of newly formed ice on Damstjern in Buskerud, Norway. the altitude of the lake is 800 meters above sea level. the night before was clear with a temperature low of -7 C. in the morning most of the lake was open water, but ice had begun to form on the section of rocky shallow shoreline that is most protected from wind and waves. i don't know which crystalline phase this ice exhibits but i have not seen patterns like this before. while some may be inclined to suggest photos like these are better suited to a more technically oriented community, i view them as features in natural design best exemplified in the medium of black and white
