shadows and reflections contest entry: @eolianpariah

this is a proper, vanilla shadow. it is well defined and clear which is good but it is too normal and predictable to be the kind of shadow i am looking for. i just included it to compare with the next image. fortunately to find what i was really looking for all i had to do was turn 90 degrees to the right and walk a few steps

p1280720_edited.jpg
now that's what i'm talking about! i love that unanticipated v shape. the overboards have definitely been drinking and what about those underboards- they are totally repressed. censorship these days has gone way too far. underboards stand up and be counted!
ONE BOARD ONE SHADOW!! ONE BOARD ONE SHADOW!! ...

speaking of standing up
p1270145_edited.jpg
in the olden days the entrance gate to the military base always had a guard standing on duty no matter what. luckily for him there was a guardhouse to stand in during inclement weather. recently the guardhouse was moved further inside the complex to a place which gave its shadow a little elbow room.

here's the guardhouse

there is a wonderful scenic path along the coast where i live that traverses very varied terrain. one particularly rough section has a short boardwalk to ease passage
p1270199_edited.jpg

while the boardwalk is in fact straight sturdy and safe the shadows it casts on the rock seem to suggest that perhaps the carpenter was somewhere between sloshed and smashed

if you could only see the shadows and not the boards you would likely think twice about crossing

pretty much everybody knows that pine cones grow on pine trees but i bet you didn't know that coconuts come from spine trees? i know this because we just so happen to have one in our garden in india.

back in norway again we are most fortunate to have an excellent overlook of stavern harbor from our garden. just under us about 3 meters down is an access road along the dock. as there is very limited traffic it is a very popular place to take a harborside stroll.
for a few hours in the afternoon the sun is at just the right angle to give us an excellent vantage point for all sorts of candid shadows. none of the following images have been planned or posed in any way except for the last one.

have you ever noticed that couples that have had a long happy marriage act and even start to look like each other? the reason for this is because when two people love each other they are continually exchanging life energy with each other. much of that energy remains in the other and over time it builds up and takes physical form to the extent that they start to become each other. as seen here
p1280232a.jpg
no longer two separate individuals but one couple,
p1280232_eded.jpg

of course there are always ladies taking photos with their phones

or sitting on a bench sending messages (edited for color)

but that you can see anywhere. so how about these three youth enjoying summer?
p1280242_eded.jpg
that's our picket fence making the shadow on the road and t-shirt but more interestingly
it seems that a head has fallen behind.

sometimes the shadows can be downright eerie
p1280428_edited.jpg
now maybe it's just me but i find this image unsettling. i keep telling myself that it is just a curious illusion created by angle of perception and precise timing but something keeps asking me-
"what if it's not?"

these next three are from inside the old military base.

i just needed to see the child this time even if the shadow has some bizarre features- the mother's arms for instance
p1280735_edited.jpg

WARNING adult content ahead if you can't take it don't look
now hands and arms do move all over the place when you are walking and sometimes the shadow can be quite revealing.

p1280650_edited.jpg
disturbingly revealing. nowadays these transgenders have become so bold! somebody should say something!
"excuse me ma'am or sir or whatever but there seems to be something hanging out of your shorts"

have a look at this guy.
p1280574_edited.jpg
what is he all about?? i hope that is a bow made of ribbon but he was running so fast i couldn't catch it in time

p1280654_edited.jpg
shadows never lie but things are not always as they seem. thankfully.

i have taken all the above photos except the spine tree which my wife took and i will close with another of hers. it's of me posing as sinnatagen.
p1280505_eded.jpg
sinnatagen is probably norway's most famous sculpture. it's of a small angry boy placed in frogner park in oslo but this shadow is from a happy crazy aging man playing like a kid in the park that used to be a military base here by the sea in stavern. the rock may look painted but that is its natural late afternoon color.
