I've taken to visiting churches. I don't consider myself an accomplished Catholic; I still remember Sundays when I didn't want to get out of bed, in a vague hope of avoiding Sunday mass, an activity I couldn't escape.
However, in my recent visits to churches, I have discovered that they hide a rich architecture, design and history. Not to mention the symbiosis between the building and the parishioners. It is a conjugation of everything: the building materials, the interior design, the sculptures and the people. A place reverberating with life.
The church I am going to talk about today is a luxury. It is a real hidden gem in the Barrio Union of Petare: Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church, located on El Carmen Street, Barrio Union, Petare, Caracas, Venezuela.
This church was the product of the desire, planning, love, organization, perseverance and diligence of two Carmelite religious, on the one hand, Luis Perea Murillo and, on the other hand, Jesus Misas Hidalgo, who were the planners - builders of the church. The interesting thing is that they had such a degree of leadership that the parishioners of the neighborhood joined forces and helped to build the church. Today, the young parishioners tell the story of the church with great pride.
So much beauty began in the minds of two parish priests. Their parishioners helped make it a reality. Which leads me to think that when an idea expands, the longing materializes. A desire that began as a spark or vibration in a person's imagination.
The church is located on a slope, so the lower part or basement of the church functions as a parish house and can accommodate up to 7 priests. Up some stairs we found the main entrance to the church, whose beige and brick-colored facade is welcoming. The half-arched doors and windows caught our attention.
The interior walls are full of details with geometric shapes. Details in the form of columns also abound. It is a true beauty. The oval-shaped altar has in its center a sculpture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The person in charge of the church allowed us to enter the back area of the church and go up to where the image was. So we were able to appreciate the priests' vestibule. Stained glass windows, sculptures and religious images abound.
On the second floor there is a space where the authorities and choirs attend mass. In this same place are the stairs that lead to the roof, where the bell tower is located. We were allowed to climb the bell tower, an opportunity I could not miss.
A narrow metal staircase in the shape of a spiral led us to the roof. The concrete floor serves as a base for two small lateral towers and a central tower, where the vestiges of what used to be the bells are located. They now use a sound system to alert parishioners.
A door caught my attention and when I looked out I discovered that the decorative ceiling of the area where the parishioners receive the holy mass is made of anime, fastened with a system of aluminum profiles and wire. By the way, the roof is made of acerolit, a gable roof.
Before I finish, I want to tell you that this church was finished in the 60's and the parish priest Jesús Misas Hidalgo died in 1977, after being run over by a motorcycle. His remains are buried in the church and he is fondly remembered by the inhabitants of the area.

Sin embargo, en mis últimas visitas a iglesias, he descubierto que esconden una rica arquitectura, diseño e historia. Amén de la simbiosis que se da entre la edificación y los feligreses. La iglesia de la que les voy a hablar hoy, es un lujo. Es una verdadera joya escondida en el Barrio Unión de Petare: La Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, ubicada en la calle El Carmen, Barrio Unión, Petare, Caracas, Venezuela.
Esta iglesia fue producto del deseo, planificación, amor, organización, perseverancia y diligencia de dos religiosos carmelitas, por un lado, Luis Perea Murillo y, por el otro, Jesús Misas Hidalgo, quienes fueron los proyectistas – constructores de la iglesia. Lo interesante es que tenían tal grado de liderazgo, que los feligreses del barrio unieron fuerzas y ayudaron a construir la iglesia. Hoy en día, los jóvenes feligreses cuentan la historia de la iglesia con mucho orgullo.
Tanta belleza comenzó en la mente de dos párrocos. Sus feligreses ayudaron a hacerla realidad. Lo que me lleva a pensar que cuando una idea se expande, el anhelo se materializa. Deseo que comenzó como una chispa o vibración en el imaginario de una persona.
La iglesia está ubicada en una pendiente, así que la parte baja o sótano de la iglesia funciona como casa parroquial y tiene capacidad para albergar hasta a 7 sacerdotes. Subiendo unas escaleras encontramos la entrada principal a la iglesia, cuya fachada de color beige y color ladrillo es acogedora. Llamó la atención las puertas y ventanas en medio arco.
En las paredes interiores abundan los detalles con formas geométricas. También abundan detalles en forma de columnas. Es una verdadera belleza. El altar en forma oval tiene en su centro una escultura de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. El encargado de la iglesia, nos permitió ingresar al área trasera de la iglesia y subir hasta donde estaba la imagen. Así que pudimos apreciar el vestíbulo de los sacerdotes. Abundan los vitrales, esculturas e imágenes religiosas.
En el segundo piso se encuentra un espacio donde presencian la misa las autoridades y coros. En este mismo lugar se encuentran las escaleras que conducen a la azotea, donde se encuentra el campanario. Nos permitieron subir al campanario, oportunidad que no podía desaprovechar.
Una estrecha escalera metálica en forma de caracol nos llevó a la azotea. El piso de concreto sirve de base para dos pequeñas torres laterales y una torre central, donde se encuentran los vestigios de lo que fueron las campanas. Ahora utilizan sistema de sonido para avisar a los feligreses.
Una puerta llamó mi atención y al asomarme descubrí que el techo decorativo del área donde los feligreses reciben la santa misa, es de anime, sujeto con un sistema de perfiles de aluminio y alambre. Por cierto, el techo es de acerolit, a dos aguas.
Antes de terminar quiero contarles que esta iglesia se terminó de construir en la década de los 60s y el párroco Jesús Misas Hidalgo falleció en 1977, luego de ser arrollado por una motocicleta. Sus restos están sepultados en la iglesia y es recordado con mucho cariño por los habitantes del sector.
