The second phase of the tower construction happened all in one day! It was amazing to watch the entire process. Please be sure to check the video at the bottom of the post!
The first thing they had to do was stand up the body of the tower since it was laying on its side on the yard. The crane that was used was a 250 ton crane - the biggest one in Panama! Everything was hooked up and the steel creaked while it was stood up, but it stayed together!
Next thing we knew, the body was floating in the air headed up to the base where it would bet set. A four story tower floating in the air is really a cool sight! There were cars stopping in the neighborhood to see what was going on!
After the body of the tower was welded into place, it was time for the top to make its way to the top of the tower. The straps and chains holding it up kind of looked like a big spider keeping it in the air!
A few of the workers had to climb up the tower while the top was being set in place. They just had to hook their arms and legs around the poles and make their way up since there were no ladders tall enough! You can see them toward the top in the photos. They had on security harnesses!
Backing away from the tower and seeing how it looked at the very end was one of my favorite parts. The crane was still holding it up while the top was welded in place.
At the end of the day, the workers all had huge smiles on their faces. They said it was the coolest job they had ever done. They were all so happy to have been a part of it.
