Yesterday I was helping at parkrun where I was scanning barcodes as people finished. It was sunny at times, but then we had showers of fine rain too. The turnout was not too bad and the first runner in was running with his dog and did a good time.
After lunch we headed into London as we were off to see Foo Fighters play at the London Stadium. This was our third time seeing them. Daughter and her boyfriend were meeting up with us for the gig and they are off to the Isle of Wight festival today to see McFly and Green Day. The trains were fairly busy as there was also Taylor Swift playing at Wembley Stadium and there was a big pro-nature rally going on.
I have been to the London Stadium for the Olympics and some other athletics events, but this was my first concert there. It is pretty huge and we were right at the back of the stands at the end away from the stage. Of course they had screens. The sound was not too bad, but it got a bit muddled at times.
First act on were Hot Milk who were noisy and very sweary. It must be great for such acts to play such a big stage.
Next up was Courtney Barnett who was a bit more arty. With her trio band and left-handed guitar I could see some parallels with Nirvana. Her last couple of songs were more poppy.
The arena was filling up as we got towards 7:30 when the main act was due on. Foo Fighters attract a broad audience with all ages including families bringing young kids along. There was a range of band shirts to be see. They actually had a merchandise stand outside the stadium with a huge queue. There was less of wait at those inside. T-shirts started at £35 up to £100 for a hoodie. There were also lots of food stands. The stadium is used by West Ham United, but gets a few big gigs.
The Foo Fighters started on schedule and proceeded to play for three hours. It is not like they are short of hits to play. We did have a few songs from the new album which is their first since drummer Taylor Hawkins died. Taylor's son came on to play drums on one song and Dave Grohl's daughter Violet sang with him on a couple. Dave also did a few acoustic songs at the end of the runway.
The band have a great energy and there was lots of singing along. When 80,000 people scream you really feel it. One thing they did a lot was to end a song with a pause for the crowd to applaud and then they would go back into it for a little longer. I guess this gets the crowd going. A lot of the songs were extended, but this is not a band that is really into solos. There were a couple on guitar and one drum solo. Dave used to swap places with Taylor on one song, but he did not play any drums this time. Actually the last time we saw them was after he broke his leg, so he was not very mobile then.
They ended with Everlong and some fireworks. It was a great show. It was a long walk back to the station as there were just so many people heading that way. We did not have to wait too long for a train back to St Pancras to get the train home. There were a few Swifties on that one. We were back in Arlesey about 12:30 and then walked home. It was a little odd that a young guy was out for a run then.
I needed a lie-in this morning and got up about 9:30. That is really late for me, but I was tired. I headed out for a run and it was already quite warm. I found the run really hard work. That may have been a mix of the heat and just being tired. I still managed a 10k, but it was nothing special. I was really warm when I got back and had to cool down for a while before getting in the shower. I may have a swim later. I used our pool for the first time this year on Friday as it has just not been warm enough lately.
