We are all Camila
At school all the kids, especially a group of boys, teased her. Not only did they call her nicknames, which had to do with her color, since Camila was black, but they also made jokes like sticking gum in her hair, on her desk, and even hiding her notebooks. Although many of us girls did not agree with those pranks, we kept quiet for fear that the boys would hit us and the only thing we did was to comfort Camila whenever she cried. I remember that many times we told the teachers, but they did not impose, or at least I do not remember that they did it in a forceful way, any punishment to the transgressing children. This "soft and permissive" attitude made the children more offensive and violent.
On one occasion we went out for recess and all of us sat on a cement bench to eat the snack we had brought from home. A boy, with premeditation and malice aforethought, ran close to Camila, pushed her and Camila dropped the food she was carrying in her hands. Not knowing what to do, we stood with our mouths open, waiting for a response from the teachers who were nearby, but beyond a simple scolding, they did nothing more. The child who had committed the prank along with other children began to laugh because Camila was crying for her food.
I don't remember how it happened or who started it, but at that moment, all the girls who were close to Camila fell on top of the laughing children. I remember that I hit them a lot and they hit me too. Then the teachers intervened and after they heard the versions, they gave a hard hand to the rude children. From that day on, the boys never again openly teased Camila and as for the girls, we were united and brave.
Over the years, when I remember this anecdote, I would like to think that those boys learned their lesson and learned to respect the girls, but also that the girls understood that they could not let themselves be humiliated by anyone.
Todas somos Camila
