Knob

A fishmonger in the city of pearls rode his bicycle through the neighborhoods, always honking his horn and calling out "Special herring, fresh and fat".

He is a man in his fifties who, when he laughs, shows his customers his huge teeth, the size of a domino. Next to a wart, so big it would fit in one hand, which is why they call it: The Knob.

Every morning, Knob went to the port to buy his merchandise. He would always find a crowd of merchants reselling the fish at a slightly higher price.

Taking advantage of his skill, he preferred to climb down the piles of the dock, as if he were a monkey, just to negotiate a discount directly with the ships.

"Hey," said a fisherman. "Why don't you wait like the others on the dock?".

"Man no" replied Knob "up there I buy from the one who buys from you, and since I'm no fool, here I am," replied Knob with a smile that revealed his impressive domino shaped tooth.

The fisherman let out a laugh and replied, "I'll sell you the fish just because you made me laugh

Knob was very glad he had filled his basket, and when he looked up he noticed a seagull staring at him.

He heard the flapping of another coming from the side, and then one more came up behind, and before long he was surrounded by many birds.

He looked the seagulls in the eye and realized that it was not him the birds were threatening, they were all focused on the box full of fish.

"Get out of here" Knob shouted worriedly, but the birds did not leave, on the contrary, they began to fall on the fish, biting them and carrying them away whole.

Knob tried to shoo them away with his hands but to no avail, desperately jumped from the pile of the dock to one of the boats.

The fishermen laughed and said, "Hey man, it was more expensive for you to come down here".

Poor Knob had to go back to buy the fish. However, the seagulls did not eat all the fish, but it was so chopped up that the holes on the sides were visible, and it was not fit to be sold

On his way back to the dock, he met his friend Luis, who suggested: "Dude, finish giving the damaged fish box to the seagulls. That way you make more room to put in a better fish"

Knob replied annoyed: "I'm not going to give those birds the pleasure".

His friend looked at him thoughtfully and after a few seconds asked, "So what are you going to do with all those fish?".

"I'm going to sell it to the cat lady. Let her give me whatever she wants for the box of fish. I have to get something back."

The cat lady was a customer who bought fish to feed all the cats in the neighborhood.

Luis replied in surprise. "That lady died a few weeks ago. Anyway, go to the alley and see if a relative will buy it from you."

Knob put the good fish in front of the bicycle and the bad ones behind and before starting his route, he went to that alley to see if he could sell the fish.

When he arrived he found no one, as soon as he shouted "Special herring, fresh and fat" hundreds of cats came out from everywhere, meowing desperately hungry. It looked like these animals hadn't been fed in days.

Knob thought the seagull calamity was going to be repeated with the cats, so he ran as fast as he could. But the cats moved nimbly and climbed up his legs. Going straight for the fish, both bad and good.

Knob, in an attempt to save his merchandise, grabbed the cats by the back and threw them as far as he could, but every time he pushed one away, six cats came at him, more came in than went out.

Knob no longer saw tens or hundreds, but thousands of cats, which made him think that he too would be eaten.

He left the bicycle, the box and the fish to flee the place, while the cats piled on top of each other, covering his belongings completely.

After the big party, people passing by looked at the bicycle and the hundreds of cats sleeping with their stomachs full, and wondered, "That's not Knob's bicycle".

People never heard from our fishmonger again, some think he was eaten by cats, others say he went to the other side of town and sells many things, except fish.
