The Conversation: Stumbling Path

How long has it been? I sat down, staring at my screen, thinking of how long it has been since I had to change the career path, I had always wanted to follow to something else. "Yes, its more than 22 years now," I said in my mind. I picked up my laptop and started typing.

It is a common thing for teachers and parents to ask their kids, "What do you want to be in the future?" Sometimes I think to myself, Is that question really necessary for kids? What do they know? Can't they help the kids become what they want to be in the future? When I was asked this question, the only thought on my mind as a kid was to become an astronaut. This was the path I was ready to take. I was ready to do everything to achieve this dream of mine, but little did I know that there are so many things that would hold me back.

"You want to become an astronaut? That's great. You can become anything you want to become in life," was what my teacher told me, and this made me more determined. I started reading books about atronology, taking science classes, and watching documentaries, but no one ever told me that wouldn't be enough for me to walk the path of success.

The first roadblock I experienced was that of the university. Because nothing of such was done in my country, no university offered the course, and I discovered this at a late date. I was already in senior high school 1 (SS1). It was a shocking discovery for me.

"You mean I can't study astronomy at the university?" I asked my dad that evening as we sat on our balcony watching the sunset. "Yes Demola. There is something that has been predestined for us because of the country in which we were born," he said. I watched him talk with sadness in his eyes, and this made me sad too. I wanted to be an astronaut so I could take a picture of the earth and show it to my parents so they could be proud of me, but I guess I have to find an alternative path.

"Was there something you wanted to be when you were younger?" I asked my dad, and the responses he gave me changed the way I think. He said, "Yes, I wanted to be a public speaker, more like a politician, but I don't want to go fully into politics because of the gimmick in it." I was hearing him talk about how he wanted to change the country he lived in so people who wanted to pursue a particular dream could achieve the dreams, and this ignited a new resolution in me.

If he can't make that happen, then I will do that for him. I changed my thinking perspective as I set on a new path to change the world I live in.
