When I heard that there was a movie on Netflix about crimes in the nineteenth century, with Christian Bale playing the role of a drunken detective, who the great Edgar Allan Poe also accompanies, I could not miss the opportunity. Although I saw it days after its premiere, since I was delayed due to work, I always had it in my sights until the time came.
I like crime thrillers, and if you add historical characters such as a famous writer, everything becomes more interesting, however, mistakes can be so notorious and become a terrible disappointment, and based on this argument, there are certain things I would like to mention.

Cuando me enteré de que había una película en Netflix sobre crímenes en el siglo XIX, con un Christian Bale haciendo el papel de un ebrio detective, y que además es acompañado por el grandísimo Edgar Allan Poe, no podía desaprovechar la oportunidad. Aunque la vi días después de su estreno, ya que las ocupaciones me retrasaron, la tuve siempre en la mira hasta llegado el momento.
Me gustan los crímenes policiacos de novela negra, y si a esto le agregas personajes históricos como un famoso escritor, todo se vuelve más interesante, sin embargo, los errores pueden ser tan notorios y convertirse en una terrible decepción, y con base en este argumento, hay ciertas cosas que me gustaría mencionar.
'The Pale Blue Eye', is a 2022 film directed by Scott Cooper; a director entirely linked to crime stories and police mysteries. Based on the novel by Louis Bayard, the director brings us a story about a detective (Christian Bale), who is summoned by some soldiers from a military academy to help them solve a mystery.
A young soldier was found hanging outside the place, with an atrocious particularity. As the man delves into the investigation, he meets a young cadet and poet; Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), who leaves him intrigued by his strange intelligence and unique way of expressing himself. Ultimately, the two decide to work together to solve the horrendous crimes occurring in that dark and strict military academy.
What I liked the most (besides Christian Bale), was Harry Melling's performance as Edgar Allan Poe. I thought it was very hilarious, and I thought he did it very well. I have read several biographies of Poe, as he is one of my favorite writers in the world, and I agree that he behaved just as he does in the movie, and if not, it comes very close.
‘The Pale Blue Eye’, es una película de 2022 dirigida por Scott Cooper; un director bastante ligado con las historias de crímenes y misterios policiales. Basándose en la novela de Louis Bayard, el director nos trae una historia sobre un detective (Christian Bale), que es convocado por unos soldados de una academia militar para que los ayude a resolver un misterio.
Al parecer, un joven soldado fue hallado colgado en las afueras del lugar, con una particularidad atroz. Mientras el hombre se adentra en la investigación, conoce a un joven cadete y poeta; Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), quien lo deja intrigado por su extraña inteligencia y singular manera de expresarse. Al final, ambos deciden trabajar juntos para resolver los horrendos crímenes que ocurren en esa oscura y estricta academia militar.
Lo que más me gustó (además de Christian Bale), fue la interpretación de Harry Melling como Edgar Allan Poe. Me pareció muy hilarante, y me parece que lo hizo muy bien. He leído varias biografías de Poe, ya que es uno de mis escritores favoritos del mundo, y concuerdo en que él se comportaba tal cual como en la película, y si no, se acerca mucho.
Poe is known worldwide as the father of the detective story or detective mystery. He was also a master of riddles, for in his most famous short stories such as "The Golden Beetle" he left riddles for readers to solve for themselves as they progressed through the story.
I deduce that the Spanish title of the movie 'The Crimes of the Academy', is a reference to 'The Crimes in the Rue Morgue', Poe's first detective mystery story, and also the one that made him famous. Maybe it's not, it's just a guess, although the coincidence is more than evident.
Another thing I liked about the film was the photography; it is dark, and gloomy, with gradient and deep colors; even the coloring had a tendency towards the somber. I the details in the costumes, the particular slang of the characters, and their aphorisms, I found quite good and entertaining. This is exactly how I imagine the settings when I'm reading a crime novel or a dark police mystery story.
Poe es conocido mundialmente como el padre del relato policíaco o misterio policíaco. También era un maestro para los acertijos, pues en sus cuentos cortos más famosos como “El Escarabajo de Oro” dejaba enigmas para que los lectores resolvieran por sí mismos a medida que avanzaban en la historia.
Deduzco que el título en español de la película ‘Los Crímenes de la Academia’, es una referencia a ‘Los crímenes en la Calle Morgue’, El primer cuento de misterio policíaco de Poe, y también el que lo hizo famoso. Tal vez no sea así, solo es una suposición, aunque la coincidencia es más que evidente.
Otra cosa que me gustó de la película fue la fotografía; pues es oscura, lúgubre, con colores degradados y profundos; incluso lo colorido tenía una tendencia hacia lo sombrío. Los detalles en los vestuarios, la jerga particular de los personajes y sus aforismos, me parecieron bastante buenos y entretenidos. Así es exactamente como me imagino los entornos, cuando estoy leyendo una novela negra o un relato oscuro de misterio policial.
Christian Bale also did an excellent job playing his character; detective Augustus Landor, a man who is smart at solving crimes, but who has a torment that has led him to alcoholism, which refers to his missing daughter. In this type of plot, the main character must have an internal conflict to solve, as this makes the story more interesting. Landor seeks to solve the crimes as well as to free himself from the pain that overwhelms him, but an unexpected twist will make us change our perception.
Another character I liked was Mrs. Julia Marquis, played by Gillian Anderson. Her personality was very strange and she said things with recklessness and some biting. I liked how the actress gave her that touch of madness and at the same time a calmness that was notoriously degrading in a highborn woman. I found the character to be both intriguing and frightening.
Although the film has many good elements, some things disappointed me, for example, the suspense it tries to induce is too weak, I felt nothing as I watched each scene. It's like an almost imperceptible roller coaster that tries to climb to the top, but it can't, and it goes completely unnoticed in the end.
Christian Bale también hizo un excelente trabajo interpretando a su personaje; el detective Augustus Landor, un hombre inteligente para resolver crímenes, pero que posee un tormento que lo ha llevado al alcoholismo, el cual hace referencia a su hija desaparecida. En este tipo de tramas, es muy importante que el personaje principal tenga un conflicto interno por resolver, ya que esto hace más interesante la historia. Landor, busca resolver los crímenes al igual que liberarse del dolor que lo agobia, pero un giro inesperado hará que cambiemos nuestra percepción.
Otro personaje que me gustó, fue el de Mrs Julia Marquis, interpretado por Gillian Anderson. Su personalidad era muy extraña y decía las cosas con imprudencia y algo de mordacidad. Me gustó como la actriz le dio ese toque de locura y a la vez una calma que se degradaba notoriamente en una mujer de alta alcurnia. El personaje de verdad que me pareció tanto intrigante como temible.
A pesar de que la película tiene muchos elementos buenos, hay cosas que me decepcionaron, por ejemplo, el suspenso que trata de inducir es demasiado flojo, no sentí nada a medida que veía cada escena. Es como una montaña rusa casi imperceptible que trata de subir a lo más alto, pero no puede, y pasa al final desapercibida por completo.
I found this very serious, especially in this kind of dark and tragic-themed movie, where stimulating suspense has to be one of the most relevant things in the plot, and if this is not applied wisely, it ends up being boring. I also didn't like the way the events unfolded, for example, the resolution of the mystery of the crimes. It seemed too forced and very clumsy to reveal them, I can only save the revealing truth of the final act, which I did not expect, and although those scenes did not seem to me the best, the story moved me and I felt empathy for the main character.
Honestly, I didn't find it an extraordinary film. It seems that the production didn't make the necessary effort to improve certain details or to fill in those gaps which made the plot sound a bit disappointing. They didn't know how to make the most of a good story, with Christian Bale and Harry Melling giving great performances. I think if they had handled the suspense better, the way the important facts were revealed, and approached the plot differently, the film would have been better. It's not something I would watch again, but in the end, I can only say that I found it entertaining.
Esto me pareció muy grave, sobre todo en este tipo de películas de temática oscura y trágica, donde estimular suspenso tiene que ser una de las cosas más relevantes de la trama, y si esto no es aplicado sabiamente, termina siendo aburrido. Tampoco me gustó como se fueron dando los hechos, por ejemplo, la resolución del misterio de los crímenes. Me pareció demasiado forzado y muy torpes al revelarlos, únicamente puedo salvar la verdad reveladora del acto final, la cual no me esperaba, y aunque esas escenas no me parecieron las mejores, la historia me conmovió y sentí empatía por el personaje principal.
Sinceramente, no me pareció una película extraordinaria. Pareciera que la producción no se esforzó lo necesario para mejorar ciertos detalles, o de cubrir esos huecos que hacían que la trama sonara un poco decepcionante. No supieron aprovechar al máximo una buena historia, con un Christian Bale y un Harry Melling con interpretaciones estupendas. Pienso que, si hubieran manejado mejor el suspenso, la manera en que se revelaban los hechos importantes y abordado de otra manera la trama, la película hubiera quedado mejor. No es algo que volvería a ver, pero al final solo puedo decir que me pareció entretenida.
