It's not so often that I am persuaded to see a film that I have never heard of or that no one is talking about. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not someone that likes to watch a film just because it is popular or because it was made by a big studio especially given that these days, many of those movies are trash stuffed with some sort of annoying propaganda. Still, I often see films that are relatively known and it takes a certain level of trust for me to be persuaded to see a film that like only five or six other people have heard about. Also, given that I only accept these recommendations from people whose opinions I respect, most of the time these films turn out to be nice.
Well, this past week I had someone that I trust recommend me a movie that I had never heard of. This movie is titled Assassin Club and it runs for almost two hours. I have sat through the time and now I want to talk about it. Is the film as good as its title? Let's find out.

Firstly, I just want to say that before I recommend a movie to someone, I must have sat through the entire thing no matter how bad the experience might be. Apparently, as I just recently learned, not everyone shares this sentiment. I had believed that the person recommending this movie to me had watched it up until the end but she hadn't. Instead, she went ahead to tell me how great she thought it was and how I would love it. It was after I had decided to trust her and sit through the whole thing that she confessed that she had not watched it till the end. By then, it was too late for me given that I had already experienced something that could have been avoided.
To put it bluntly, Assassin Club is just not a good movie. The film starts off really well but then it gradually begins to become uninteresting. Initially, it felt like the film would be something like Kingsman, given the assassin and his handler, but it doesn't even come close to being that good. If the film was just cliche and predictable I guess it would have been better but it was worse. This is one of those films that clearly feels like there was not a lot of thought put into it. Of course, these days there are many productions like this but not all of them make it very clear like this film does.
It's no longer news to most average people that many film writers these days do not have any new ideas for stories to tell. This is why many films these days are just similar at least in their concepts. Sometimes a film may have a cliche concept but then it stands out in storytelling. For Assassin Club, the reverse is the case because the concept was quite interesting but then it lacked greatly in the storytelling aspect. Just to highlight the concept briefly, a mysterious person puts six million dollars on the table for seven of the best assassins in the world to hunt and kill themselves with some of them having more at risk than the others. I'm not an expert storyteller by any measure but I can easily imagine different ways this concept could have been made into a great film. Sadly, Assassin Club is not that film because, like I said before, the people that made it just didn't care enough to put in a lot into it.

I didn't like the camera movements or the color for that matter but I was willing to overlook all of these if the mystery was sustained. I love a good mystery just like literally everyone and I'm certain that a good mystery would have been enough to make this movie interesting. Sadly, the mystery in this movie was botched. Firstly, the mystery of the mastermind behind the twisted game was ruined almost from the start when the person was just revealed. This quickly made the movie less intense. Secondly, there was an interesting assassin that was unknown initially but just like the first mystery, the reveal was rushed and the character quickly became less scary. If these mysteries had been sustained a while longer, I would have kept watching just to get the big reveals at the end. Well, there was an attempt to add a twist somewhere towards the end but it just couldn't repair the damage that had been done.
Another sad thing about this film is that it cannot even boast of interesting characters or cast members. The protagonist is that guy from Crazy Rich Asians who I just learned is named Henry Golding and given that I liked his performance in that movie, I was very disappointed with his performance in this one. It's true that not every actor can play any role and to be fair, Godling was not the only flop in this film. Honestly, a better job should have been done with the casting process. Beyond the cast members, the characters should have been written better given that some of them are hollow, boring or both.
Finally, the nail on the coffin of this film is the rushed ending. It's sad that not every conflict in this story was resolved. There were still somethings that were left out. Considering this and how quickly the scenes change after the last fight, the film just has one of the worst endings I've seen as of recent. It doesn't help that there is a hint to a sequel which will hopefully never come.
