The Beast Must Die is a new adaptation of one of the first novels written by Cecil Day-Lewis, the father of the famous actor Daniel Day-Lewis, author of crime novels under the pseudonym Nicholas Blake. I have not seen either movie, but I will look them up and then compare it with this modern version in serial format. The Beast Must Die es una nueva adaptación de una de las primeras novelas escritas por Cecil Day-Lewis, el padre del famoso actor Daniel Day-Lewis, autor de novelas policíacas con el seudónimo de Nicholas Blake. What is the plot?
Nigel Strangeways is assigned as Chief Constable of the Isle of Wight, following the sudden death of the previous chief. He is a man about town who is carrying deep trauma after the death of his police partner, suffers panic attacks and sees a therapist. Now he has to deal with an inefficient local police force. The same day he takes office he meets Frances Cairnes, a woman who hopes to find the man who killed her six-year-old son a few months ago, after he was run over and the driver fled the scene. The case seems to have no solution and she decides to use all her savings to change her appearance, use her maiden name and invent that she is writing a book, to investigate on her own, seeing that the police want to leave the case forgotten. Frances wants revenge and will get a clue that will involve her with the important and rich family of Goerge Rattery. A rich family but with great internal conflicts. The policeman Nigel also struggles with his demons and decides to investigate the case of the run over child. Will the paths of Nigel and Frances cross? Will Frances manage to find the driver of the vehicle that killed her son? Is it really who she suspects? Are there more people involved? What has happened? What will triumph: revenge or justice?

My opinion
The series grabbed me with its first scene. The face of the character Frances shows us all the rage and accumulated pain. With determination she knows that somewhere on the island there is a person she doesn't know, she doesn't know his name or age, but she will search until the end of her days to kill him.
Revenge, that primitive desire that we can all feel if we are touched by a tragedy like the one experienced by the protagonist of the story. She has had a life full of love and tragedy at the same time. An adoring husband who taught her to sail, but who died rescuing other people and she was pregnant with their son Martie. The child who was taken from her by a reckless driver and the ineffective police can't seem to find.
What is the solution? Do the impossible on your own and do the job the police won't do. Investigate all the leads. One of them must be the right one. That's what she believes. That's what she'll do, pretend to be someone she's not, while drowning out all her pain in the face of mounting evidence that she's on the right track.
What would you do, what would I do? I think we would agree that the same thing Frances does. That's what makes her character so interesting and powerful. She was the focus of my attention. I wanted to see how masterfully, an ordinary citizen, who dedicated her life to being a teacher of children, perfectly executed her revenge. Because she has a plan, will everything go according to plan, or will she be discovered before she succeeds?
In a clever way, the story unveils things about the person Frances presumes to be the driver. But always with a certain ambiguity, so that the doubt remains as to whether he really is the culprit or if it could have been someone else. We will have to wait for the final stretch for everything to be clarified and of course with the respective plot twist that should not be missing in a good story of investigation and revenge.

La serie me atrapó con su primera escena. El rostro del personaje Frances nos muestra toda la rabia y el dolor acumulado. Con determinación sabe que en algún lugar de la isla hay una persona que no conoce, no sabe su nombre ni su edad, pero buscará hasta el final de sus días para matarlo.
La venganza, ese deseo primitivo que todos podemos sentir si nos toca una tragedia como la que vive la protagonista de la historia. Ella ha tenido una vida llena de amor y tragedia al mismo tiempo. Un marido adorable que le enseñó a navegar, pero que murió rescatando a otras personas y ella estaba embarazada de su hijo Martie. El niño que le fue arrebatado por un conductor imprudente y que la ineficaz policía parece no encontrar.
¿Cuál es la solución? Hacer lo imposible por tu cuenta y hacer el trabajo que la policía no hace. Investiga todas las pistas. Una de ellas debe ser la correcta. Eso es lo que ella cree. You can tell this family is screwed up, they are all crazy unhappy. What does this family have to do with the accident? You have to find out by watching it.
Although I've talked more about Frances and her revenge, the story is divided into two main characters. Well, actually the main character is the cop Nigel. Only his story didn't hook me as much at first, but then everything falls into place and it works as an introduction to this character that we're sure to see again in the future.
Nigel Strangeways isn't quite right in the head either. His partner in the police force died on a mission, he tried to save her, pressing on the wound, but she vanished before him. That tragic event has left him completely unwell, suffering intense panic attacks and visiting a psychiatrist to find a way to alleviate his distress.
That is why he is transferred to head the police force of that island, a quiet place where almost everyone knows each other. What they did not know is that the case of the run over child will alter him and at the same time will be the way he will try to find his inner peace, managing to solve the case. But first he will have to make changes in the way things are run in the local police department.
All the characters in this series are to put them in an asylum hahaha. It is common for the main cop to be a person tormented by some past event. But here it's not just the cop, it's Frances, it's George, it's Violet, it's Lena, even the son of the rich family is already showing signs of having a disturbed mind.
The title says that the beast must die, but everyone seems to have a beast inside.
I watched the series last night, which left me satisfied with the drama and the story of the investigation. Will justice be served in the end? Depends on your perception, I don't know if revenge will end up granting peace to the one who executes it, but it should give some emotional relief. The pieces fit together and we will have a sad, painful and poetic ending.

The reception of the series seems to have been positive and it appears that creator Gary Chiappe and director Dome Karukoski are working on what will be a second season of the series. Of course, based on another of Nicholas Blake's novels and with the character of cop Nigel Strangeways taking on the task of solving another mysterious crime. As I was telling you before, he is the real protagonist of the story and there are several novels about his character. I already want to see these new adventures adapted on the screen.
La diferencia de clases es un tema que se aborda en la serie. Frances seguirá una pista que la involucra con una chica cuya hermana está casada con un hombre rico. Ella tendrá que infiltrarse, convivir con esa gente que parece tenerlo todo a nivel material, pero que carece de lo más importante, la paz y la felicidad.
La familia Rattery vive llena de lujos, pero en realidad es un infierno. George, el patriarca, sólo piensa en los negocios y se cree por encima de los demás. Su hermana Joy es una anciana rica que desprecia a todos y esconde un secreto. Violet es la esposa de George, más joven que él, podría ser su hija, pero parece estar completamente loca. Phil es el hijo de George y Violet, que es constantemente despreciado y humillado por su padre. Y Lena es la hermana de Violet, también joven, pero que ha tenido una aventura sexual con su cuñado. Se nota que esta familia está jodida, son todos unos locos infelices. ¿Qué tiene que ver esta familia con el accidente? Tienes que descubrirlo viéndolo.
Aunque he hablado más de Frances y su venganza, la historia se divide en dos personajes principales. Bueno, en realidad el personaje principal es el policía Nigel. Sólo que su historia no me enganchó tanto al principio, pero luego todo encaja y funciona como introducción a este personaje que seguro que volveremos a ver en el futuro.
Nigel Strangeways tampoco está del todo bien de la cabeza. Su compañera en el cuerpo de policía murió en una misión, él intentó salvarla, presionando sobre la herida, pero se desvaneció ante él. Ese trágico suceso le ha dejado completamente mal, sufriendo intensos ataques de pánico y visitando a un psiquiatra para encontrar la manera de aliviar su angustia.
Por eso es trasladado a dirigir la policía de esa isla, un lugar tranquilo, donde casi todos se conocen. Lo que no sabían es que el caso del niño atropellado le alterará y al mismo tiempo será la forma en que intentará encontrar su paz interior, logrando resolver el caso. Pero antes tendrá que hacer cambios en la forma de llevar las cosas en el departamento de policía local.
Todos los personajes de esta serie son para meterlos en un manicomio jajaja. Es común que el policía principal sea una persona atormentada por algún hecho del pasado. Pero aquí no es solo el policía, es Frances, es George, es Violet, es Lena, incluso el hijo de la familia rica ya muestra signos de tener una mente perturbada.
El título dice que la bestia debe morir, pero es que todos parecen tener una bestia dentro.
Anoche vi la serie, que me dejó satisfecho con el drama y la historia de la investigación. ¿Se hará justicia al final? Depende de tu percepción, no sé si la venganza acabará otorgando la paz a quien la ejecuta, pero debería dar cierto alivio emocional. Las piezas encajan y tendremos un final triste, doloroso y poético.
¿Y ahora qué?
La acogida de la serie parece haber sido positiva y parece que el creador Gary Chiappe y el director Dome Karukoski están trabajando en lo que será una segunda temporada de la serie. Por supuesto, basada en otra de las novelas de Nicholas Blake y con el personaje del policía Nigel Strangeways encargándose de resolver otro misterioso crimen. Frances Cairnes is played by the famous actress Cush Jumbo, who does a magnificent job. The actress is known for the series The Good Wife and its spin off The Good Fight. Here we will not see her as the lawyer that made her famous, on the contrary, she plays a totally different character, with strength to carry out her revenge but also loaded with a lot of drama and pain. She steals the show, overshadowing the real protagonist of the story. Excellent choice of actress to play this complicated character that will make us feel too many emotions in each episode.

Mia Tomlinson is the actress who plays Lena , Violet's sister who will have an affair with Geoge. She and French become friends and she will be a key piece in deciphering the mystery of who ran over the boy. I don't know much about the actress's background, but she gives a fabulous performance of a woman who feels guilty for betraying her sister, with a past full of tragedies.
