Family comes first. This is made clear by the matriarch of the crime family portrayed in this intense debut from filmmaker Jeanette Nordahl that I saw a couple of nights ago. A crime drama where the danger is within the walls where the characters live.

What is the plot of the film?
Ida and her mother have a car accident. Tragedy has knocked at the door, her mother dies in the hospital. She is only 17 years old, so the social services send her to her aunt Bodil's house, whom she hasn't seen for years. In that house are her three cousins, Jonas, Mads and David. It seems like a normal family, like any other, but there is a detail, Bodil and his sons have illicit business. Ida will have to accompany them and get to know the family business. She will passively observe the entire criminal network of the clan, conflicting with her principles. What will happen? Will she betray her family? Will she silence the crimes she observes? Will she become an accomplice? What is she willing to sacrifice? Above all, there is family loyalty, isn't there?

Wildland has been compared, and rightly so, to the successful Australian film by then debutant David Michôd Animal Kingdom, which has been adapted as a television series. The story has many similarities, with the difference that in this Danish production the protagonist is a woman. When I started watching it, I was immediately reminded of the Australian film, but then, as the story unfolds, it shows its own identity.
The big difference of this crime drama with others is that the danger does not come from any external agent. There are no scenes of police officers trying to disrupt the family's business. There are no police investigations, no scenes of chases or armed confrontations with law enforcement.
The real danger manifests itself within the family. First with the arrival of Ida, who is actually a stranger to everyone, as her mother had moved away from her family because she disagreed with the criminal business. She is the new member of the group who will make the three brothers uncomfortable.
David, the youngest, is the one who immediately expresses his concern and bewilderment at Ida's presence on one of his outings to collect money. But he has the least decision-making power. Jonas and Mads accept Ida because it is the order given to them by their mother and they obey without complaint.
The mother is the one who exercises total control in the house and in the business. No one dares to question the decisions she makes. Manifested in all the scenes they share together, the mother has a magnetism and outshines everyone else. Jonas, the eldest son, who is married, is the one who best accepts his role within the family and business.

The whole sense of danger is maintained within the home. There is a palpable tension in the atmosphere, in the looks and conversations they have throughout the house. You get the bad feeling that something very bad could happen at any moment.
This is one of the best elements of the story's mise-en-scene. The atmosphere of danger comes down to the family base that is engaged in a dangerous business. Is Ida safe with her own family? What decision will the matriarch make when her children are in danger? Is Ida seen as a member of the family or will she become an enemy?
Ida's character, even if she doesn't express herself much and remains silent after seeing the uglier side of the family, will be afraid to be with them. She will have to struggle with herself to make a decision, to turn against her blood or to be with them, she must meditate very well, because family comes first.
The dilemma of maintaining loyalty to the family, even if they do things you don't like. what would you do? We will understand Bodil's stance because she acts as any mother would, to protect her children no matter what. Ida, on the other hand, is just a cousin, she owes him no loyalty, but she is also family and is the only one he has left after his mother's tragic death. A difficult situation for a teenager of only 17 who is just beginning to discover the world, to have fun and to feel love, even if it is unrequited.
Toda la sensación de peligro se mantiene dentro del hogar. Hay una tensión palpable en el ambiente, en las miradas y en las conversaciones que mantienen en toda la casa. Tienes la mala sensación de que algo muy malo puede ocurrir en cualquier momento.
Es uno de los mejores elementos de la puesta en escena de la historia. La atmósfera de peligro se reduce a la base familiar que se dedica a un negocio peligroso. ¿Está Ida a salvo con su propia familia? ¿Qué decisión tomará la matriarca cuando sus hijos estén en peligro? ¿Se ve a Ida como un miembro de la familia o se convertirá en un enemigo?
El personaje de Ida, aunque no se exprese mucho y permanezca en silencio después de ver el lado más feo de la familia, tendrá miedo de estar con ellos. Tendrá que luchar consigo misma para tomar una decisión, ponerse en contra de su sangre o estar con ellos, debe meditarlo muy bien, porque la familia es lo primero.
Entra en juego el dilema de mantener la lealtad a la familia, aunque hagan cosas que no te gustan. ¿Qué harías tú? Entenderemos la postura de Bodil porque actúa como lo haría cualquier madre, para proteger a sus hijos pase lo que pase. Ida, en cambio, es sólo una prima, no le debe ninguna lealtad, pero también es de la familia y es la única que le queda tras la trágica muerte de su madre. Una situación difícil para un adolescente de tan sólo 17 años que está empezando a descubrir el mundo, a divertirse y a sentir amor, aunque no sea correspondido.
The film is narrated from a female point of view, not only because the director is a woman, but also because the two main characters, Ida and Bodil, are women. Ida and Bodil are the main focus of the story, an intimate look at a family with shady business dealings, shot with great precision and offering a surprisingly cold, beautiful and devastating ending.
Jeanette Nordahl presented her film at the Berlin Film Festival, where it received excellent reviews. The filmmaker makes her feature debut with this film, although she has a track record as second unit assistant director on several productions, including one of the films in the successful Q-Files saga and the award-winning series Borgen. He directed two episodes of the miniseries When the Dust Settles, so he has experience and he has shown it with this deep drama of a criminal family. A proposal in which he marks his style, of which I wish to see more in his future films.

The family clan
Sandra Guldberg Kampp is now a somewhat better known name in her home country. She has worked on the series Rain. She previously worked in some short films and it was with Wildland that she made her big film debut. She plays Ida, the protagonist who guides us in this family story. Her character is very passive for most of the film, she is an observer who discovers and feels the danger of living with her peculiar family. It can be hard to feel sympathy for her, but the work done by the young actress is good.
Bodil is the matriarch of the clan. Played by the famous actress Sidse Babett Knudsen. She is the most attractive character in the story. She seems like a normal woman, mother of three adult children whom she loves and protects with all her might. She is affectionate with Ida, but when she sees that her children are in danger, she shows all her courage to protect them. Extraordinary interpretation of the actress, able to change the atmosphere of a scene with her presence. Her character is the one in charge and the one who gives the orders and she will not let her family stability falter.
Jonas is played by Joachim Fjelstrup, who leads the team of the three brothers. He is the eldest of them all and follows his mother's orders to the letter. Whatever she orders, he carries out. Like all the other members of the clan, he is willing to do anything to protect the family. He is the most stable of the siblings, has a wife and a daughter just a few months old. The actor conveys the sense of danger with his look, he will not let anything affect the family togetherness.
Mads is played by Besir Zeciri, the middle brother, who spends his days playing video games and training. He is the typical idiot who only thinks about spending the day as a bum and only hangs out with his brothers when they have to do the dirty work. He uses force against those who owe money, that's all he's good for. A correct interpretation of the actor, who shows fragility and brutality at the same time.
David is played by Elliott Crosset Hove. He is the younger and weaker brother. In the past he has had problems with drug use, he is the most complex and unstable character of all. It is as if he has the mentality of a child, a character that can be a danger. He is reproached by his siblings and by his mother, he is a prisoner in his own family, which he loves, but he also feels he is not happy, he dates a girl that his mother does not seem to like and sometimes it is depressing to see how he is mistreated.
Anna is played by Carla Philip Røder. She is the girl David is dating and who will become pregnant. The matriarch of the clan does not see her as the right one for her son, so they will always have scenes of tension and discussion. It will also be a factor that will influence Ida, as our protagonist will begin to feel attraction for her.

Puede ser difícil sentir simpatía por ella, pero el trabajo realizado por la joven actriz es bueno.
Bodil es la matriarca del clan. Interpretada por la famosa actriz Sidse Babett Knudsen. Es el personaje más atractivo de la historia. Parece una mujer normal, madre de tres hijos adultos a los que quiere y protege con todas sus fuerzas. Es cariñosa con Ida, pero cuando ve que sus hijos están en peligro, muestra todo su valor para protegerlos. Todo lo que ella ordena, él lo lleva a cabo. Como todos los demás miembros del clan, está dispuesto a hacer cualquier cosa para proteger a la familia. Es el más estable de los hermanos, tiene una esposa y una hija de pocos meses. El actor transmite la sensación de peligro con su mirada, no dejará que nada afecte a la unión familiar.
Mads es interpretado por Besir Zeciri, el hermano mediano, que se pasa el día jugando a los videojuegos y entrenando. Es el típico idiota que sólo piensa en pasar el día como un vago y sólo sale con sus hermanos cuando tienen que hacer el trabajo sucio. Utiliza la fuerza contra los que deben dinero, sólo sirve para eso. Una interpretación correcta del actor, que muestra fragilidad y brutalidad al mismo tiempo.
David es interpretado por Elliott Crosset Hove. Es el hermano menor y más débil. En el pasado ha tenido problemas con el consumo de drogas, es el personaje más complejo e inestable de todos. Es como si tuviera la mentalidad de un niño, un personaje que puede ser un peligro. Es reprochado por sus hermanos y por su madre, está prisionero en su propia familia, a la que quiere, pero también siente que no es feliz, sale con una chica que parece no gustarle a su madre y en ocasiones es deprimente ver como es maltratado.
Anna es interpretada por Carla Philip Røder. Es la chica con la que sale David y que se quedará embarazada. La matriarca del clan no la ve como la adecuada para su hijo, por lo que siempre tendrán escenas de tensión y discusión. También será un factor que influirá en Ida, ya que nuestro protagonista comenzará a sentir atracción por ella.

Una película danesa centrada en mostrar la vida de Ida y la encrucijada a la que debe enfrentarse, al quedarse sola y tener que ir a vivir con los únicos familiares que tiene. Pero los turbios negocios y problemas en los que se ven envueltos la harán replantearse los lazos de sangre y la lealtad. Con pocas alternativas, Ida deberá aprender que lo más importante en la vida es la familia.
