I'm glad every time I follow my instinct and select a good movie to watch. The title caught my attention, I had seen the actresses in TV series and I had read some time ago an article about the director in a horror blog, where they reviewed a short film.

Precisely this whole adventure of making Sound of Violence began when Alex Noyer was the producer of a documentary called 808, which told the story of the first musical drum machine in history.
What does that documentary have to do with this horror film? The filmmaker had a spark of creativity and wrote and directed the seven-minute short film Conductor, where he mixed what he learned about synthesizers and the musical world of the documentary with the horror genre and created the character of Alexis. The short film was very well received. Unfortunately I have never seen it, I only remember the good reviews in several Horror pages several years ago.
When an idea has potential, you have to keep exploring the ways it can be expanded and create a good production. Alex Noyer seems to be a filmmaker who has a fighting spirit and doesn't give up. Focusing on the character Alexis shaped this story around, he sought out a producer willing to take a chance on a crazy idea, the kind that any major Hollywood studio would close its doors to.
No-Office, an independent film company based in Finland and Los Angeles, along with You Know Films, Alex Noyer's production company, are the producers of this interesting horror film. With a low budget they have done a great job with the special effects.
It's not a perfect movie, but if we leave aside the small detail of the police investigation, everything else works perfectly well. What is this movie about? What is the crazy story of the movie? Music and gore?

Precisamente toda esta aventura de hacer Sound of Violence comenzó cuando Alex Noyer fue productor de un documental llamado 808, que contaba la historia de la primera caja de ritmos musical de la historia.
¿Qué tiene que ver ese documental con esta película de terror? El cineasta tuvo una chispa de creatividad y escribió y dirigió el cortometraje de siete minutos Conductor, donde mezcló lo que aprendió sobre los sintetizadores y el mundo musical del documental con el género de terror y creó el personaje de Alexis. What is the plot of Sound of Violence?
Alexis, a ten-year-old girl, has problems with her hearing system. Her father has a violent temper and one night, driven mad, murders her little brother and mother. She is terrified, but sneaks up on him and with a mallet begins to hit her father over the head. With each blow, she begins to feel an incredible sensation, recovers her sense of hearing and at the same time activates a synesthetic capacity. As an adult, she works on music classes at the university and on projects of her own with her roommate Marie, with whom she is in love. In one of her experiments she will feel again what she felt when she killed her father. It is something so pleasurable that it will become an obsession for her. Does madness take over her mind? How far is she capable of going to feel pleasure again? Has the monster inside her awakened? How much blood will be spilled?

My opinion about the film
I loved the plot of the film, a little girl with hearing problems, discovers, in the midst of a horrible family tragedy, these synesthetic powers that give her unimaginable pleasure. At only ten years old, it is something that will mark her for life.
The construction of Alexis' past is well developed, we are shown the origin of her trauma, which will turn her into a completely unhinged person in the future. Because those sensations, when she feels them again, will transport her mentally to the past, precisely to the moment when it all began.
The protagonist of the story does not go crazy from one day to the next. Everything is justified, from my point of view. The trauma she suffered as a child may have been forgotten for a while, but it is still there, deep in her memory. Until, in the middle of an experiment, the trunk where she had that memory is opened. The feeling manifests itself again and from that moment on, like an addict, she wants more.
Is Alexis a murderer? Yes, she is. The need to be able to feel that vital energy, because she not only hears, she can see the sounds. Only to achieve this, terrible events must occur, people must die in the most gruesome way, so that she can for brief moments feel complete, alive, satisfied.
Most serial killers had a terrible childhood, suffering some trauma or abuse by the nuclear family. Alexis' murderous mind has always been there, hidden behind a kind face and in the body of a harmless woman. The unrequited love she feels for Marie will be another breaking point in her mental health. In addition to another important factor, the danger of losing his hearing again is latent according to medical reports. Everything comes together to make his mind explode and he commits the creative murders.
Mi opinión sobre la película
El argumento de la película me encantó, una niña con problemas de audición, descubre, en medio de una horrible tragedia familiar, estos poderes sinestésicos que le producen un placer inimaginable. Con sólo diez años, es algo que la marcará de por vida.
La construcción del pasado de Alexis es bien desarrollada, se nos muestra el origen de su trauma, que la convertirá en una persona completamente desquiciada en el futuro. Porque esas sensaciones, cuando las vuelva a sentir, la transportaran mentalmente al pasado, precisamente al momento en que todo comenzó.
La protagonista de la historia no se vuelve loca de un día para otro. Todo está justificado, desde mi punto de vista. El trauma que sufrió de niña puede haberse olvidado durante un tiempo, pero sigue ahí, en lo más profundo de su memoria. Hasta que, en medio de un experimento, se abre el baúl donde tenía ese recuerdo. La sensación se manifiesta de nuevo y desde ese momento, como una adicta, quiere más.
¿Es Alexis una asesina? Sí, lo es. La necesidad de poder sentir esa energía vital, porque ella no sólo escucha, puede ver los sonidos. Sólo que para lograrlo, deben ocurrir eventos terribles, la gente debe morir de la manera más espantosa, para que ella pueda por breves momentos sentirse completa, viva, satisfecha.
La mayoría de los asesinos en serie tuvieron una infancia terrible, sufriendo algún trauma o abuso por parte del núcleo familiar. La mente asesina de Alexis siempre ha estado ahí, escondida detrás de un rostro amable y en el cuerpo de una mujer inofensiva. El amor no correspondido que siente por Marie será otro punto de ruptura en su salud mental. Además de otro factor importante, el peligro de volver a perder la audición es latente según los informes médicos. Todo confluye para que su mente estalle y cometa los creativos asesinatos.
The planning of the murders and the way the filmmaker captures them pleasantly surprised me. They are very creative, reminding me at times of some of the deaths in the Saw saga. The director doesn't censor himself, he goes the gore route, something that fascinates me in this kind of movies. Deaths and blood in Horror movies activate something in me, just as it happens to the protagonist, who feels pleasure.
Alexis' whole story is very well narrated, from her childhood and then her adult stage, the relationship she has with her friend Marie, whom she loves, but Marie is interested in dating men. The script is well constructed in that story arc. Although the story is stilted, it is coherent within the context in which it takes place.
But as I said, it's not perfect. What I found negative is the small arc of the police investigation. I understand that it was necessary, you can't commit a murder without bringing it to the attention of the police. But the character of detective Sonya Fuentes is very weak, full of stereotypes and with very bad dialogues. I saw no credibility in that character and she doesn't really bring anything important to the story. The police related stuff didn't get enough time in the script to give them more depth.
But otherwise, the film shines, despite not having an abundant budget, the special effects of the death scenes are well executed. So is the cinematography, which lends credibility to the scenes where Alexis sees the sounds and is carried away by the feeling of ecstasy it gives her. Daphne Qin Wu, the cinematographer in charge of the film's photography, is to be congratulated for this work.
In a film where music and sound are an important factor in the story, the director hired professionals Alexander Burke, Omar El-Deeb and Jaakko Manninen, the latter being a Finnish DJ composer who worked on the short film that inspired the film. An excellent work, where the sounds and music help us to understand the disturbed character of Alexis.
Give this film a chance, enter its extrasensory world and enjoy a different kind of horror film, one of those that will never be supported by Hollywood, but with a crazy story and ideas, bordering on the limits of the plausible, but that will leave genre lovers feeling the same pleasure as the protagonist. Will she stop, will she have any limits, will she be trapped, what will be the price to pay? The pleasure will also be accompanied by the most terrible pain.
La planificación de los asesinatos y la forma en que los capta el realizador me han sorprendido gratamente. Son muy creativos, recordándome por momentos algunas de las muertes de la saga Saw. El director no se censura, va por la vía del gore, algo que me fascina en este tipo de películas. Las muertes y la sangre en las películas de Terror activan algo en mí, al igual que le ocurre al protagonista, que siente placer.
Toda la historia de Alexis está muy bien narrada, desde su infancia y luego su etapa adulta, la relación que tiene con su amiga Marie, a quien ama, pero Marie está interesada en salir con hombres. El guión está bien construido en ese arco argumental. Aunque la historia es rebuscada, es coherente dentro del contexto en el que se desarrolla.
Pero como ya he dicho, no es perfecta. Lo que me pareció negativo es el pequeño arco de la investigación policial. Entiendo que era necesario, no se puede cometer un asesinato sin llamar la atención de la policía. Pero el personaje de la detective Sonya Fuentes es muy débil, lleno de estereotipos y con diálogos muy malos. No vi credibilidad en ese personaje y realmente no aporta nada importante a la historia. Las cosas relacionadas con la policía no tuvieron suficiente tiempo en el guión para darles más profundidad.
Pero por lo demás, la película brilla, a pesar de no tener un presupuesto abundante, los efectos especiales de las escenas de muerte están bien ejecutados. También la fotografía, que da credibilidad a las escenas en las que Alexis ve los sonidos y se deja llevar por la sensación de éxtasis que le produce. Hay que felicitar a Daphne Qin Wu, la directora de fotografía encargada de la fotografía de la película, por este trabajo.
En una película en la que la música y el sonido son un factor importante en la historia, el director contrató a los profesionales Alexander Burke, Omar El-Deeb y Jaakko Manninen, este último es un DJ compositor finlandés que trabajó en el cortometraje que inspiró la película. Alexis Reeves. The woman who after the trauma of her childhood who discovers the synaesthetic ability when she murders. She seems a harmless woman, in love with her friend Marie, she is very intelligent and when her abilities are activated again, it will be impossible to resist them. She becomes a serial killer. The character is very well played by actress Jasmin Savoy Brown, whom I had only seen in the series The Leftovers. She has worked in other movies and series that I haven't seen. But attention, looking at her IMDB profile she is one of the actresses in the next movie of the Scream Saga, so don't be surprised if we see her soon in more important productions. Marie Sotker is Alexis' best friend, they are roommates and she helps her in the process of creating experimental music. She is a secondary character who always supports Alexis, what she doesn't know is the serious danger she is in, because Alexis is a complete psychopath. The character is played by the beautiful Lili Simmons, an actress I follow since I saw her for the first time in one of the best series I have in my top: Banshee. In that series she was Rebecca, the Amish niece of the villain Kai Proctor. She conveys a lot of sexiness and many of the characters she plays have sizzling sex scenes. She also worked on the first season of True Detective and some will recognize her from the pathetic series Gotham. In the movie she does an ok job and something different from what we are used to. Among the other cast members we find actor James Jagger playing Duke, a boy who becomes Marie's boyfriend. Did you notice the last name? The young actor is the son of superstar Mick Jagger. James is trying to make a career as an actor, he has worked in some series and movies. Actress Tessa Munro, who has a long history of playing supporting roles in movies, plays Detective Sonya Fuentes, the policewoman who will try to find the serial killer.

Sound of Violence premiered at the last SXSW Film Festival and is currently available on VOD on some platforms. I recommend watching this horror film with a wacky but engrossing story. Very well done death scenes and with an ending full of pleasure and pain. What will be Alex Noyer's next project? I don't know, but I will be keeping a close eye on his next film.

Sound of Violence se estrenó en el pasado Festival de Cine SXSW y actualmente está disponible en VOD en algunas plataformas. Recomiendo ver esta película de terror con una historia descabellada pero absorbente. Escenas de muerte muy bien hechas y con un final lleno de placer y dolor. ¿Cuál será el próximo proyecto de Alex Noyer? No lo sé, pero voy a estar muy atento a su próxima película.
