A few weeks ago I found a review in the Movies and TV Show community of a movie called Beach Rats. I memorized the director's name and a couple of days ago, searching for the film, I stumbled upon a surprise, the filmmaker's most recent production, from last year. Never, rarely, sometimes, always. But it is a fabulous film that deals with a very controversial subject.

Pero es una película fabulosa que trata un tema muy controvertido.

The cinematic experience that this independent film made me feel is incredible. I knew absolutely nothing about the director and I thank the person who reviewed Beach Rats, because through him I discovered a gem of a film.
Who is the director? Her name is Eliza Hittman and she is a screenwriter, producer and director. This is her third film. I have not yet seen her two previous works: It Felt Like Love, about the sexual awakening of a 14 year old teenager, and Beach Rats. I promise to seek them out to see them and write my impressions of those films. The screenplay of Never Rarely Sometimes Always is also of her authorship. All her productions have her author's stamp, they are independent films and in which she has had creative freedom, so the result is a powerful drama with two incredible teenage characters who must solve a problem that will determine the future of the life of one of them.
It is the way the story is told, with a natural and realistic style, that some scenes seem as if we were watching a documentary or make us feel that we are sitting next to one of the characters, watching her absorbed in her thoughts, in her suffering and in her pain, facing a problem that thousands of teenagers have to live every day.
Hittman has achieved recognition with her previous films, by specialized critics and has won awards at festivals in the independent film circuit. This film, made last year, is the one that has received the most awards. Among the most important is the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, the TVE Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, the Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival, the National Board of Review Award and other nominations for various independent film awards. It deserves all the accolades and awards it has received for the incredible work it has done.
A film that should be seen not only by teenagers, but also by adults, who in most cases are so busy with their own problems that they neglect communication with their teenage children, forgetting that they were also at that age and that what this story tells us is happening to some girl at this very moment. Let's get straight to the point, as in all my reviews, with a brief synopsis made by me and then my personal impressions of the film.

Todas sus producciones tienen su sello de autora, son películas independientes y en las que ha tenido libertad creativa, por eso el resultado es un potente drama con dos increíbles personajes adolescentes que deben resolver un problema que determinará el futuro de la vida de uno de ellas.
Es la forma en que está contada la historia, con un estilo natural y realista, que algunas escenas parecen como si estuviéramos viendo un documental o nos hacen sentir que estamos sentados junto a uno de los personajes, viéndola absorta en sus pensamientos, en su sufrimiento y en su dolor, enfrentándose a un problema que miles de adolescentes tienen que vivir cada día.
Hittman ha logrado el reconocimiento con sus anteriores películas, por parte de la crítica especializada y ha ganado premios en festivales del circuito de cine independiente. Esta película, realizada el año pasado, es la que más premios ha recibido. Entre los más importantes está el Premio Especial del Jurado en el Festival de Cine de Sundance, el Premio TVE en el Festival de Cine de San Sebastián, el Gran Premio del Jurado en el Festival de Cine de Berlín, el Premio de la National Board of Review y otras nominaciones a diversos premios de cine independiente. Se merece todos los elogios y premios que ha recibido por el increíble trabajo realizado.
Una película que deberían ver no sólo los adolescentes, sino también los adultos, que en la mayoría de los casos están tan ocupados con sus propios problemas que descuidan la comunicación con sus hijos adolescentes, olvidando que ellos también estuvieron en esa edad y que lo que nos cuenta esta historia le está pasando a alguna chica en este mismo momento. Vamos a ir directamente al grano, como en todas mis críticas, con una breve sinopsis hecha por mí y luego mis impresiones personales sobre la película.
What is the plot of the film?
Autumn Callahan is a teenager who studies in a high school, she does not seem to have a good relationship with some classmates, who make fun of her and say offensive words to her. She also does not have a good relationship with her father, who always reproaches her for her attitude. Her mother tries to maintain communication with her, but Autumn seems to be going through that difficult stage of rebellion. She is 17 years old and lives with her parents and younger sisters in Pennsylvania. But the reason for Autumn's behavior is that she discovers she is ten weeks pregnant, according to a clinical center in her town. The laws of her state require that in order to have an abortion she must have parental consent. Autumn, with the help of her cousin Skylar, sets out on a trip to New York, since there are clinics there where she does not need her parents' permission to have an abortion. Where will they get the money for the trip? How will they spend several days in a city they don't know? What inconveniences will arise? Will she make it to the clinic? Won't her parents find out? Is Autumn sure about having an abortion? How many young women like her are going through a similar situation?

Autumn Callahan es una adolescente que estudia en un instituto, no parece tener buenas relaciones con algunos compañeros, que se burlan de ella y le dicen palabras ofensivas. My opinion about the film
The controversial issue that is masterfully raised in the film is abortion. A topic that generates controversy around the world, especially in the United States, where there are states where its practice is completely legal and there are conservative religious groups that are against it. That is why it is common to see groups of demonstrators at the doors of these clinics, with banners and slogans against abortion.
As well as access to these clinical centers, they handle security measures to give access to their facilities, because there are people so deranged, who claim to be pro-life and against abortion, but who are capable of carrying out deadly attacks against people who have made the decision to have an abortion or even against the workers of these centers. A reflection of the intolerance in which our society is immersed.
Before giving my opinion on the film, I must say where I stand on this issue. I am a person who defends the freedom of all individuals, I support the rights and freedom of each person to do what they want, especially if it is something that is related to their own body. Therefore, I am in favor of abortion. In my home country it is illegal, but if I were a U.S. citizen, I would support laws that defend abortion rights. I am not religious, nor am I interested in the opinions of archaic doctrines, written millennia ago, that are not adapted to the 21st century.
One of the great successes of the filmmaker is that, being a woman, she does not take a position on the subject. Incredibly, she manages to deal with a subject that generates controversy, without taking a position, without judging any of her protagonist's actions, without trying to manipulate us emotionally by telling us whether it is a good or bad thing. She presents us with a very realistic story that could happen to any teenager, not only in the United States. The filmmaker makes us see Autumn's life and problems, without prejudice.
Mi opinión sobre la película
El tema controvertido que se plantea magistralmente en la película es el aborto. Un tema que genera controversia en todo el mundo, especialmente en Estados Unidos, donde hay estados donde su práctica es totalmente legal y hay grupos religiosos conservadores que están en contra. Por eso es habitual ver grupos de manifestantes a las puertas de estas clínicas, con pancartas y lemas en contra del aborto.
Así como el acceso a estos centros clínicos, manejan medidas de seguridad para dar acceso a sus instalaciones, porque hay personas tan desquiciadas, que dicen estar a favor de la vida y en contra del aborto, pero que son capaces de realizar ataques mortales contra personas que han tomado la decisión de abortar o incluso contra los trabajadores de estos centros. Un reflejo de la intolerancia en la que está inmersa nuestra sociedad.
Antes de dar mi opinión sobre la película, debo decir cuál es mi posición en este tema. Soy una persona que defiende la libertad de todos los individuos, apoyo los derechos y la libertad de cada persona a hacer lo que quiera, sobre todo si es algo que está relacionado con su propio cuerpo. Por lo tanto, estoy a favor del aborto. En mi país de origen es ilegal, pero si fuera ciudadano estadounidense, apoyaría las leyes que defienden el derecho al aborto. No soy religioso, ni me interesan las opiniones de doctrinas arcaicas, escritas hace milenios, que no se adaptan al siglo XXI.
Uno de los grandes aciertos de la cineasta es que, siendo mujer, no se posiciona sobre el tema. Increíblemente, consigue tratar un tema que genera controversia, sin asumir una posición, sin juzgar ninguna de las acciones de su protagonista, sin intentar manipularnos emocionalmente diciéndonos si es algo bueno o malo. Nos presenta una historia muy realista que podría ocurrirle a cualquier adolescente, no sólo en Estados Unidos. La cineasta nos hace ver la vida y los problemas de Autumn, sin prejuicios.
Is what she does right, is it wrong, who are we to judge? Surely we've all had some kind of problem, we've all lied, we've all made a bad decision, we've all made a mistake, etc. Do we deserve to be condemned forever? I think not. If unwanted teenage pregnancy is a problem in the United States, imagine in less developed countries, such as Latin America. For example, when I talk to a European, they always express surprise that Latin Americans are having children so young.
The camera observes the journey of the two protagonists, from their small town to the imposing city of New York, where they know no one, have little money and, due to circumstances that will arise because of the weeks of pregnancy, will have to spend more than a day there, something that was not in their plans.
Wonderfully, as much realism as possible is used in each scene, the style of narrating the story and the approach adopted by the director is excellent. How can a seemingly simple story catch me? When there are filmmakers who are able to make us empathize with the story, making us silent observers of the events, some of them emotionally devastating.
I understand that for some conservative-minded people it will be difficult to understand Autumn. I can even imagine them saying that it's her fault for not taking care of herself, pointing to her as the only one to blame for what happens to her. Her pregnancy was an accident, she didn't want it, but it's not really her fault either. As I said at the beginning of the post, some adults seem to forget that they were also teenagers and made mistakes.
Is there someone to blame in all of this? Maybe, but it's not the woman to blame. It's not the 17 year old who is experiencing her sexuality as most of us did at that age. She should not be demonized or let her life, her future, be destroyed, there are legal methods to help her find a solution to her problem.
Being part of a home where she is not understood and only receives reproaches. A hostile environment at school, a part-time job as a cashier where the supervisor treats them badly and even tries to cross the line with one of them. A society that only knows how to judge others, but does not look at its own shortcomings. All these factors that influence the decision that the character in the film makes. Do you still believe that she is to blame for her problem?
There is one scene in particular, which is devastating. A long close-up in which Autumn's character answers some questions. Her answers and reactions to the questions posed to her will offer many answers and make some understand, if only for a moment, everything that goes through the character's mind and the problems she has had to face.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always is independent cinema of great quality, in every sense. A solid script, superb direction by an impeccable author when it comes to directing scenes of great realism and perfect performances. I have been delighted with this film and wish that many of you can enjoy it.
¿Está bien lo que hace, está mal, quiénes somos nosotros para juzgar? Seguro que todos hemos tenido algún tipo de problema, todos hemos mentido, todos hemos tomado una mala decisión, hemos cometido un error, etc. ¿Merecemos ser condenados eternamente? Yo creo que no. Si el embarazo adolescente no deseado es un problema en Estados Unidos, imagínate en países menos desarrollados, como América Latina. Por ejemplo, cuando hablo con un europeo, siempre expresan su sorpresa al ver que los latinoamericanos tienen hijos tan jóvenes.
La cámara observa el viaje de las dos protagonistas, desde su pequeño pueblo hasta la imponente ciudad de Nueva York, donde no conocen a nadie, tienen poco dinero y por circunstancias que surgirán debido a las semanas de embarazo, tendrán que pasar más de un día allí, algo que no estaba en sus planes.
Maravillosamente, se utiliza el mayor realismo posible en cada escena, el estilo de narrar la historia y el enfoque adoptado por el director es excelente. ¿Cómo puede una historia aparentemente sencilla atraparme ? Cuando hay cineastas que son capaces de hacernos empatizar con la historia, convirtiéndonos en observadores silenciosos de los acontecimientos, algunos de ellos emocionalmente devastadores.
Entiendo que para algunas personas de mentalidad conservadora será difícil entender Autumn. Incluso me los imagino diciendo que la culpa es de ella por no cuidarse, señalándola como la única culpable de lo que le sucede. Su embarazo fue un accidente, ella no lo quiso, pero en realidad tampoco es su culpa. Como decía al principio del post, algunos adultos parecen olvidar que también fueron adolescentes y cometieron errores.
¿Hay alguien a quien culpar en todo esto? Puede ser, pero no es la mujer la culpable. No es la joven de 17 años que está experimentando su sexualidad como la mayoría de nosotros lo hicimos a esa edad. No hay que demonizarla ni dejar que se destruya su vida, su futuro, hay métodos legales para ayudarla a encontrar una solución a su problema.
Formar parte de un hogar donde no es comprendida y sólo recibe reproches. Un ambiente hostil en la escuela, un trabajo a tiempo parcial como cajera donde el supervisor las trata mal e incluso intenta pasarse de la raya con una de ellas. Una sociedad que sólo sabe juzgar a los demás, pero no mira sus propios defectos. Todos estos factores que influyen en la decisión que toma el personaje de la película. ¿Sigues creyendo que ella tiene la culpa de su problema?
Hay una escena en particular, que es devastadora. Un largo primer plano en el que el personaje de Autumn responde a algunas preguntas. Sus respuestas y reacciones a las cuestiones que se le plantean ofrecerán muchas respuestas y harán que algunos entiendan, aunque sea por un momento, todo lo que pasa por la mente del personaje y los problemas a los que se ha tenido que enfrentar.
Never Rarely Sometimes Always es cine independiente de gran calidad, en todos los sentidos. Un guión sólido, una dirección soberbia de un autor impecable a la hora de dirigir escenas de gran realismo y unas interpretaciones perfectas. He quedado encantado con esta película y deseo que muchos de ustedes puedan disfrutarla.

Autumn. The teenager who, after becoming pregnant, decides to have an abortion, but does not want her parents to find out. She is afraid of their reaction. She wants to tell her mother, but cannot. She must drown her pain and find the solution herself. A well-constructed character, she is everything in the film, making us feel all her emotions, anger, sadness and pain. I was fascinated by the performance of actress and singer Sidney Flanigan, you know what? It's her acting debut and she does it perfectly. She is 22 years old and I hope this is the beginning of a fruitful acting career, she is currently an actress that the general public doesn't know, but she has the talent to become a star. I love her character and this debut has won her many independent film awards, such as best actress. Her next project has a release date for next year, the film is called Rounding and is directed by Alex Thompson.
Autumn. La adolescente que, tras quedarse embarazada, decide abortar, pero no quiere que sus padres se enteren. Tiene miedo de su reacción. Quiere decírselo a su madre, pero no puede. Debe ahogar su dolor y encontrar la solución por sí misma. Un personaje bien construido, lo es todo en la película, haciéndonos sentir todas sus emociones, la ira, la tristeza y el dolor. Me ha fascinado la actuación de la actriz y cantante Sidney Flanigan, ¿sabes qué? Es su debut como actriz y lo hace perfectamente. Tiene 22 años y espero que este sea el comienzo de una fructífera carrera actoral, actualmente es una actriz que el público en general no conoce, pero tiene el talento para convertirse en una estrella. Skylar. Cousin and best friend of Autumn, the only one she will tell the secret of her pregnancy. Another teenager like her, who will risk her job and will be the moral and physical support that the protagonist needs. She will be her traveling companion, they will have their differences, but she will never leave her alone. A sample of true union and friendship between two beings who feel alone despite being surrounded by a crowd. She is played by the young actress with theater experience Talia Ryder. Another unknown to most, her previous major work has been in the play Matilda the Musical which ran on Broadway. The fact that the two leads are both unknown actresses adds to the realism of the film.

Otra adolescente como ella, que arriesgará su trabajo y será el apoyo moral y físico que la protagonista necesita. Será su compañera de viaje, tendrán sus diferencias, pero nunca la dejará sola. Una muestra de verdadera unión y amistad entre dos seres que se sienten solos a pesar de estar rodeados de una multitud. La interpreta la joven actriz con experiencia en el teatro Talia Ryder. Otra desconocida para la mayoría, su anterior trabajo más importante ha sido en la obra Matilda the Musical que se presentó en Broadway. El hecho de que las dos protagonistas sean actrices desconocidas añade realismo a la película.
Never, rarely, sometimes, always is a film that is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. It is a subject that raises heated debates, for and against. For me it is an important film that should be seen by teenagers and adults alike, because as much as we may think we know our children completely, they are human beings with their own ideas, thoughts and decisions.
Beyond getting involved in a discussion about whether what the character does is right or not, we must strip ourselves of prejudices and try to understand the facts that are presented, be tolerant of issues that may go against some beliefs and realize that it is a complex world, where no one owns the absolute truth nor our point of view is the right one for others.
A fantastic film that I highly recommend. A gem of independent cinema that I hope you see and leave me your opinion in the comments.
Never, rarely, sometimes, always es una película que difícilmente dejará indiferente a alguien. Es un tema que suscita acalorados debates, a favor y en contra. Para mí es una película importante que deberían ver tanto los adolescentes como los adultos, porque por mucho que creemos conocer completamente a nuestros hijos, son seres humanos con sus propias ideas, pensamientos y decisiones.
Más allá de involucrarnos en una discusión sobre si lo que hace el personaje es correcto o no, debemos despojarnos de prejuicios y tratar de entender los hechos que se presentan, ser tolerantes con temas que pueden ir en contra de algunas creencias y darnos cuenta que es un mundo complejo, donde nadie es dueño de la verdad absoluta ni nuestro punto de vista es el correcto para los demás.
Una película fantástica que recomiendo encarecidamente. Una joya del cine independiente que espero que veas y me dejen su opinión en los comentarios.
