I resume my reviews of little known films, independent productions that deserve more promotion to be seen by the widest possible audience. This time I will talk about an Argentine film I saw two days ago. A story where its two protagonists must solve a matter from their past, a story of justice and revenge.

Esta vez hablaré de una película argentina que vi hace dos días. Una historia donde sus dos protagonistas deben resolver un asunto de su pasado, una historia de justicia y venganza.

Expansivas is directed by Argentine filmmaker Ramiro García Bogliano. This time he is directing solo, but I have seen other productions he has directed with his brother: Masacre esta noche and Penumbra. Ramiro was also one of the screenwriters of the film Sudor Frío, directed by his brother Adrián García Bogliano.
I learned about these filmmakers many years ago, when I saw a film that I loved: Habitaciones para turistas (Rooms for Tourists). A low budget horror story about a group of girls who must survive in a hellish town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.
The aforementioned films, by the Gracia Bogliano brothers, I recommend that you seek them out and watch them. Especially if you like the horror genre. There is one of their films that unfortunately I have not been able to see, it is called 36 pasos.
Both brothers have focused on films in the horror genre, Expansivas being a change in filmography, telling us a revenge thriller where they keep a low budget film style, giving more veracity to the plot.
If you are very demanding and want to see a film of impeccable technical quality, you may not end up hooked on this film. But if you want to support Latin American cinema, without paying so much attention to the technical deficiencies, the story is attractive and worth watching.
After this introduction, it is time to explain without spoilers what is the story that the film tells us.

Expansivas está dirigida por el cineasta argentino Ramiro García Bogliano. En esta ocasión dirige en solitario, pero he visto otras producciones que ha dirigido junto a su hermano: Masacre esta noche y Penumbra. Ramiro también fue uno de los guionistas de la película Sudor Frío, dirigida por su hermano Adrián García Bogliano.
Supe de estos cineastas hace muchos años, cuando vi una película que me encantó: Habitaciones para turistas. Una historia de terror de bajo presupuesto sobre un grupo de chicas que deben sobrevivir en un pueblo infernal de las afueras de Buenos Aires.
Las películas mencionadas, de los hermanos Gracia Bogliano, recomiendo que las busques y veas. Sobre todo si te gusta el género de terror. Hay una de sus películas que lamentablemente no he podido ver, se llama 36 pasos.
Ambos hermanos se han centrado en películas del género de terror, siendo Expansivas un cambio en la filmografía, contándonos un thriller de venganza donde se mantiene un estilo de película de bajo presupuesto, dando más veracidad a la trama.
Si eres muy exigente y quieres ver una película de impecable calidad técnica, puede que no acabes enganchado a esta película. Pero si quieres apoyar el cine latinoamericano, sin fijarte tanto en las deficiencias técnicas, la historia es atractiva y vale la pena verla.
Después de esta introducción toca explicar sin spoilers cuál es la historia que nos cuenta la película.
What is the plot of EXPANSIVAS?
Flavia and Ana are sisters. Flavia is the eldest, works at a gas station and has been away from her family for several years. Ana, who is a DJ, calls her for a matter with the funeral home, which will make them meet again and with it, the hard memory of the past. The murder of her mother. Their aunt, Irene, is a doctor and will take them to the old house where they lived and where the terrible murder took place. Flavia will find evidence inside the house that will convince her to be sure who the murderer was. The sisters join forces to find out where the person is currently living and to get justice, but what they don't know is that there is something darker than they imagine. Who is the murderer? Will they find him? What happened? Why did they kill their mother? Will they manage to get justice?
¿Cuál es la trama de EXPANSIVAS?
Flavia y Ana son hermanas. Flavia es la mayor, trabaja en una gasolinera y lleva varios años alejada de su familia. Ana, que es DJ, la llama por un asunto con la funeraria , lo que hará que se reencuentren y con ello, el duro recuerdo del pasado. El asesinato de su madre. La tía de ambas, Irene, es médico y las llevará a la antigua casa donde vivían y donde tuvo lugar el terrible asesinato. Flavia encontrará pruebas en el interior de la casa que la convencerán para estar segura de quién fue el asesino. Las hermanas unen sus fuerzas para averiguar dónde vive actualmente esa persona y hacer justicia, pero lo que no saben es que hay algo más oscuro de lo que imaginan. ¿Quién es el asesino? ¿Lo encontrarán? ¿Qué ha pasado? ¿Por qué mataron a su madre? ¿Conseguirán hacer justicia?
My opinion
The film is part of the revenge thriller genre, but takes advantage of the story to include the issue of mistreatment of women and impunity in a sexist society.
Not only because of the murder of the protagonists' mother, which occurred ten years ago, which made Flavia move away from that city and make her life apart. Trying to forget a past that is impossible to leave behind. Also because of other events that we will see in the film.
Flavia is the toughest female character. Her life and the work she does have taught her the hard way of the streets. In her face we can see the weight of her past. The pain and the desire to avenge her mother's death.
Ana, is the opposite, she is younger, she has had an easier life. When her mother's murder occurred, she was very young and received help from Irene. She dreams of being a musician and although she is a modern girl, she has traits of fragility, she is not a woman used to face the creatures of the concrete jungle.
One wants justice, the other asks her to forget. When the evidence leads them to the real culprit, this bond of sisters is consolidated with the desire for a common goal. To take justice into their own hands.
Mi opinión.
La película se inscribe en el género del thriller de venganza, pero aprovecha la historia para incluir el tema del maltrato hacia las mujeres y la impunidad dentro de una sociedad machista.
No sólo por el asesinato de la madre de los protagonistas, ocurrido diez años atrás, que hizo que Flavia se alejara de esa ciudad y hiciera su vida aparte. Intentando olvidar un pasado que es imposible dejar atrás. Tambien por otros hechos que veremos en el film.
Flavia es el personaje femenino más duro. Su vida y el trabajo que realiza le han enseñado el duro camino de las calles. En su rostro podemos ver el peso de su pasado. El dolor y el deseo de vengar la muerte de su madre.
Ana, es todo lo contrario, es más joven, ha tenido una vida más fácil. Cuando ocurrió el asesinato de su madre, era muy joven y recibió la ayuda de Irene. Sueña con ser músico y aunque es una chica moderna, tiene rasgos de fragilidad, no es una mujer acostumbrada a enfrentarse a las criaturas de la jungla de cemento.
Una quiere justicia, la otro le pide que olvide. Cuando las pruebas las llevan al verdadero culpable, se consolida este vínculo de hermanas con el deseo de un objetivo común. Hacer justicia con sus propias manos.
Is it the right thing to do, and is it ideal to take justice into your own hands? I asked myself this question while watching the film. We are used to revenge movies, Hollywood style, where someone becomes a ruthless killer to avenge a past deed. But this is an Argentine production, it is not Jason Statham the protagonist. They are two girls, normal, like any other, who want to avenge the death of their mother, especially because they know the culprit very well.
I loved the chemistry between the two actresses who play the sisters, they have no physical resemblance, but they make a believable duo. The whole process of following the two playing detectives, planning how to pull off the heist and bring justice is one of the most interesting parts of the film, which includes a surprising plot twist, which will add to the problems of the two women.
The narrative is conventional and at one point in the story, it becomes a bit predictable, knowing what the final resolution will be. But despite that, it keeps you interested in what will happen to the sisters. I'm not going to tell you if she succeeds in her mission or not, that's for you to see. But what I was wondering was: is what they want to do right? What's the message? That women should take the law into their own hands?
I don't know the statistics of homicides against women in Argentina, but surely it is a serious problem and the filmmaker wanted to address that issue using a story of revenge. The danger is that there are people who take the message literally and become vigilantes.
Why the title Expansivas? I think that besides referring directly to the expansive bullets that Flavia wants to use to kill her mother's murderer, it's what happens with both characters during the development of the story, to break free, to fly, to expand as independent women in a hostile world.
It is an interesting film and I think it should be more widely distributed, so I recommend it. If you are Latin American, you will identify more easily with the story. If you are English-speaking, I invite you to see this Argentine production, it will be a different experience and I hope you like the films made on this side of the world.
¿Es lo correcto? ¿Es ideal tomarse la justicia por su mano? Me hice esta pregunta mientras veía la película. Estamos acostumbrados a las películas de venganza, al estilo de Hollywood, en las que alguien se convierte en un asesino despiadado para vengar un hecho del pasado. Pero esta es una producción argentina, no es Jason Statham el protagonista. Son dos chicas, normales, como cualquier otra, que quieren vengar la muerte de su madre, sobre todo porque conocen muy bien al culpable.
Me encantó la química entre las dos actrices que interpretan a las hermanas, no tienen ningún parecido físico, pero hacen un dúo creíble. Todo el proceso de seguimiento de las dos haciendo de detectives, planeando cómo dar el golpe y hacer justicia es una de las partes más interesantes de la película, que incluye un sorprendente giro de guión, que aumentará los problemas de las dos mujeres.
La narración es convencional y en un momento de la historia, se vuelve un poco predecible, sabiendo cuál será la resolución final. Pero a pesar de eso, te mantiene interesado en lo que les pasará a las hermanas. No te voy a decir si tiene éxito en su misión o no, eso lo tienes que ver tú. Pero lo que me preguntaba era: ¿es correcto lo que quieren hacer? ¿Cuál es el mensaje? ¿Que las mujeres deben tomarse la justicia por su mano?
No conozco las estadísticas de los homicidios contra las mujeres en Argentina, pero seguramente es un problema grave y el cineasta quiso abordar ese tema utilizando una historia de venganza. El peligro es que haya gente que se tome el mensaje al pie de la letra y se convierta en justiciero.
¿Por qué el título de Expansivas? Creo que además de referirse directamente a las balas expansivas que Flavia quiere utilizar para matar al asesino de su madre, es lo que ocurre con ambos personajes durante el desarrollo de la historia, liberarse, volar, expandirse como mujeres independientes en un mundo hostil.
Es una película interesante y creo que debería tener mayor difusión, por eso te la recomiendo. Si eres latinoamericano, te identificarás más fácilmente con la historia. Si eres angloparlante, te invito a ver esta producción argentina, será una experiencia diferente y espero que te guste el cine que se hace de este lado del mundo.
Characters / Personajes
Flavia. The eldest of the sisters. The one who has all the rage contained inside and wants to kill the culprit, she wants to be the one who pulls the trigger to end the life of that wretch. The character is played by Sara Hebe, famous in her country for being a Hip Hop artist and for the first time doing an acting job. A daring decision on the part of the filmmaker, but from my point of view it has worked out very well for the director. The Hip Hop artist may not be an actress, but she manages to transmit all the necessary rage in her character. For me it has been one of the successes of the film. I haven't listened to any of Sara Hebe's songs and I'm not an expert in that musical genre, but I thought her performance was excellent. Will she continue acting? I don't know. Don't look for news about her, but I hope she does, I would like to see her in another movie. I leave you a music video of Sara Hebe so you can know a little more about her.
Flavia. La mayor de las hermanas. La que tiene toda la rabia contenida dentro y quiere matar al culpable, ella quiere ser la que apriete el gatillo para acabar con la vida de ese desgraciado. El personaje está interpretado por Sara Hebe, famosa en su país por ser artista de Hip Hop y por primera vez haciendo un trabajo de actriz. Una decisión osada por parte del cineasta, pero que desde mi punto de vista le ha salido muy bien al director. La artista de Hip Hop puede no ser actriz, pero consigue transmitir toda la rabia necesaria en su personaje. Para mí ha sido uno de los aciertos de la película. No he escuchado ninguna de las canciones de Sara Hebe y no soy un experto en ese género musical, pero su interpretación me ha parecido excelente. ¿Seguirá actuando? No lo sé. No busques noticias sobre ella, pero espero que lo haga, me gustaría verla en otra película. Les dejo un vídeo musical de Sara Hebe para que la conozcan un poco más de ella.
Ana. The younger sister who doesn't remember much about the murder, as she was very little. At the beginning she is the most fragile, but as the story progresses, the character evolves, becoming a strong woman with a decisive role in the final part. She is played by actress Martina Juncadella, who enchanted me with her appearance in the film. She has participated in several movies and is famous in her country. I have only seen two of her previous films: Abrir puertas y ventanas and Habi, la extranjera. In Expansivas she gives a performance that complements her co-star.
Ana. La hermana menor que no recuerda mucho del asesinato, ya que era muy pequeña. Al principio es la más frágil, pero a medida que avanza la historia, el personaje evoluciona, convirtiéndose en una mujer fuerte con un papel determinante en la parte final. La interpreta la actriz Martina Juncadella, que me encantó con su aspecto en la película. Ha participado en varias películas y es famosa en su país. Sólo he visto dos de sus películas anteriores: Abrir puertas y ventanas y Habi, la extranjera. En Expansivas hace una interpretación que complementa a su coprotagonista.

Expansivas does not have spectacular action scenes, but the journey of its two protagonists, seeking justice by avenging the death of their mother immersed me in the story. A revenge they are determined to fulfill, even if they have to go against their own blood. The film will put us in the dilemma of defining if what they do is right or a wrong way. Is revenge the only way to get justice?

Expansivas no tiene escenas de acción espectaculares, pero el viaje de sus dos protagonistas, buscando la justicia vengando la muerte de su madre me sumergió en la historia. Una venganza decidas a cumplir, aunque para ello tengan que ir en contra de su propia sangre. El film nos pondrá en el dilema de definir si lo que hacen está bien o es un camino equivocado. ¿Es la venganza la única forma de obtener justicia?
Recomiendo que la veas y saques tus propias conclusiones. Espero leer tus comentarios y conocer tu opinión sobre la película.
