When I found this movie I was reminded of my days of renting movies on DVD, many of the movies I selected were based on their cover art. The weirder and scarier the picture, the more I would put it in the rental lot. Some turned out to be really bad, but others were amazing movies that perfectly suited my deranged tastes.

Castle Freak took me back in time. The title sounded familiar. Before watching it I looked up the file on IMDB and that's when I remembered that a long time ago I saw the original film on DVD: Castle Freak directed by Stuart Gordon and starring the great actress Barbara Crampton, who worked with Gordon in the cult film Re-Animator.
Although memories are vague because it's been so long since I saw the original, I made it a point to see this remake produced by Fangoria films. When I saw who the company behind the film was I knew I would be looking at a low budget production, just like the original film.
Directing the new version is Tate Steinsiek, a filmmaker I have seen absolutely nothing of his previous filmography. According to IMDB in 2015 he released the film Addiction: A 60's Love Story, a drama about a man in the adult film industry and his family conflicts. But the filmmaker has an extensive background in film, television and special effects making.
The interesting thing about this remake is that it is not only that, I think they also wanted to pay tribute to Stuart Gordon, making a story with the same elements that characterized the work of that horror legend. Castle Freak me hizo retroceder en el tiempo. El título me resultaba familiar. Antes de verla busqué la ficha en IMDB y fue entonces cuando recordé que hace mucho tiempo vi la película original en DVD: Castle Freak dirigida por Stuart Gordon y protagonizada por la gran actriz Barbara Crampton, que trabajó con Gordon en la película de culto Re-Animator.

Lo interesante de este remake es que no es sólo eso, creo que también han querido rendir homenaje a Stuart Gordon, haciendo una historia con los mismos elementos que caracterizaron la obra de esa leyenda del terror. Porque una de las productoras es Barbara Crampton, una actriz que trabajó con Gordon y protagonizó la obra original. Precisamente la guionista de La mujer de Jakob, Kathy Charles, fue la encargada de escribir esta nueva versión de Castle Freak, cuya película original de 1995 estaba inspirada en un relato de H.P. Lovecraft, autor al que Gordon admiraba y que realizó otras adaptaciones basadas en los relatos de dicho escritor, eso sí, con su estilo cinematográfico, que no a todo el mundo le gusta.

What is the plot of Castle Freak?
Rebecca Whateley is a beautiful young woman who spends her nights partying with her boyfriend John and a group of friends. One of the nights of partying she has a car accident, because of John who is totally drunk and she is blinded. Soon after she learns that she has inherited an old castle in Albania from her birth mother. The couple travels to that country because they want to sell everything that is valuable and the castle, to enjoy the money, especially John. My impressions and opinion about the film
The first sequence of Castle Freak shows us what is inside the castle. Therefore, there is no element of surprise or suspense in discovering it, because we see it briefly, although we don't know its origin or the story behind that introduction. The important thing is that the cards are placed on the table, so that you, as the spectator, decide whether to continue watching or to leave.
Subsequently, we are introduced to the context and the presentation of the characters. They are all a group of young people living in the United States. Rebecca is very much in love with John and there are the other friends. she is the only character who manages to convey something, perhaps because she is the main character and then she has to act like a person who loses her sight. But all the other characters are flat, following common horror movie stereotypes.
To me it was a bunch of idiots. Chuck and Larry act like typical young guys who smoke weed and drink non-stop. Unlike another one of their friends, who they call The Professor, because he's so smart. He's a nerd, who doesn't really fit in with the group. Shelly is the other girl, who just wants to sleep with John. As you may notice in my description, empty characters whose goal is to give us good gore scenes.
Mis impresiones y opinión sobre la película
La primera secuencia de Castle Freak nos muestra lo que hay dentro del castillo. Por lo tanto, no hay ningún elemento de sorpresa o suspense al descubrirlo, porque lo vemos brevemente, aunque no sabemos su origen ni la historia que hay detrás de esa introducción. Lo importante es que las cartas se colocan sobre la mesa, para que usted como espectador, decida si lo sigue viendo o se retira.
Posteriormente, se nos introduce el contexto y la presentación de los personajes. Todos ellos son un grupo de jóvenes que viven en Estados Unidos. Rebecca está muy enamorada de John y están los demás amigos. ella es el único personaje que consigue transmitir algo, quizás porque es la protagonista y luego tiene que actuar como una persona que pierde la vista. Pero todos los demás personajes son planos, siguiendo los estereotipos comunes del cine de terror.
Para mí fue una pandilla de idiotas. Chuck y Larry actúan como los típicos jóvenes que fuman hierba y beben sin parar. A diferencia de otro de sus amigos, al que llaman El Profesor, porque es muy inteligente. Es un empollón, que realmente no encaja en el grupo. Shelly es la otra chica, que sólo quiere acostarse con John. Como podrán notar en mi descripción, personajes vacíos cuyo objetivo es darnos buenas escenas gore.
You must know what kind of movie Castle Freak is, for many it is a very bad movie, but for me it is a marvel, because it has all the ingredients that made me enjoy the original movie.

The grotesque and disgusting scenes in the movie really tickle my fancy. There is one in particular, which is total madness. I spent almost a minute laughing out loud at a sex scene and the disgusting presence of that creature we see at the beginning of the movie. I was freaking out, it was like being 18 again. Hahaha.
Definitely, if my previous review told you that the movie was not for all audiences, Castle Freak is not for the masses! You won't appreciate the horrendous beauty of the film, are there crappy scenes? Yes, but therein lies the charm. The original film also has many scenes that at the time were labeled trashy. Las escenas grotescas y asquerosas de la película me hacen mucha gracia. Hay una en particular, que es una locura total. Me pasé casi un minuto riéndome a carcajadas con una escena de sexo y la asquerosa presencia de esa criatura que vemos al principio de la película. Estaba alucinando, era como volver a tener 18 años. Jajaja.
Definitivamente, si mi anterior crítica les decía que la película no era para todos los públicos, ¡Castle Freak no es para las masas! No apreciarás la horrenda belleza de la película. ¿Hay escenas cutres? Sí, pero ahí está el encanto. La película original también tiene muchas escenas que en su momento fueron tachadas de cutres. Hasta en eso quisieron hacer un remake homenaje.

I am aware that some scenes may be unpleasant for sensitive minds, something very common in this era. It is incredible how in previous years this kind of movies were usually produced, now everything is politically correct and even seeing a woman's breast, can shock many. This movie contains some sex scenes, of those that are no longer seen in theaters.
Do you agree to see this movie? It's up to you. I hope more people see it, I can imagine them ranting about it, saying that it's a mess, that it's really bad, etc. Hahaha I've already seen several people on a forum say it's the worst movie they've ever seen, but I'm sure they're 13 year old kids, so I understand what they're expressing...
If you saw old movies from the eighties and nineties in DVD format renting them at the video store, this movie will make you remember that time when it was a pleasure to see the amount of covers that were in the horror section, while you were undecided about which movies to take home.
Cabe destacar que los efectos especiales me parecieron buenos, para una producción de bajo costo, son aceptables. Creo que la experiencia del director en las áreas de efectos especiales ha sido un factor importante.
El trabajo de maquillaje también es bueno, la criatura que aparece en la película es creíble, me gustó su aspecto, asqueroso y repugnante. ¿Cuál es el origen de este monstruo? ¿es humano? ¿es hombre o mujer? ¿cuál es su relación con Rebecca? Todas las preguntas tienen respuesta, aunque si eres seguidor del género de terror, el final es algo predecible.
Un final acorde con todo lo que nos estaban contando y donde se hace el mayor despliegue de efectos especiales, queriendo dar una sensación épica. Para mí el final no es tan importante, porque el viaje, es decir, la historia, me ha parecido muy divertida.
No creo que la película cause terror, pero si aceptas todos sus defectos y entras en el juego que nos muestra el director, te lo pasarás muy bien. Soy consciente de que algunas escenas pueden resultar desagradables para mentes sensibles, algo muy habitual en esta época. Es increíble como en años anteriores se producían normalmente este tipo de películas, ahora todo es políticamente correcto y hasta ver un pecho de mujer, puede escandalizar a muchos. Esta película contiene algunas escenas de sexo, de esas que ya no se ven en los cines.
¿Estás de acuerdo en ver esta película? Es tu decisión. Yo espero que la vea más gente, me los imagino despotricando de ella, diciendo que es un bodrio, que es muy mala, etc. Jajaja ya he visto a varios en un foro decir que es la peor película que han visto, pero seguro que son niños de 13 años, así que entiendo lo que expresan..
Si viste películas antiguas de los ochenta y noventa en formato DVD alquilándolas en el videoclub, esta película te hará recordar aquella época en la que era un placer ver la cantidad de carátulas que había en la sección de terror, mientras estabas indeciso por cuales películas llevarte a casa.
The original film.
Castle Freak, by Stuart Gordon, was released in 1995. Gordon was a fan of H.P. Lovecraf and, based on one of the writer's stories, co-wrote the film with Dennis Paoli, including of course many elements of Lovecraf's universe. Castle Freak, de Stuart Gordon, se estrenó en 1995. Gordon era un fan de H.P. Lovecraf y, basándose en uno de los relatos del escritor, coescribió la película con Dennis Paoli, incluyendo por supuesto muchos elementos del universo de Lovecraf. La leyenda Jeffrey Combs y Barbara Crampton fueron los protagonistas y la historia tiene sus diferencias con el remake. His performance is fine and he gets the ending he deserves.
Chuk, Larry and The Professor are John's group of friends. Chuk spends the whole movie as a stoned fool and Larry just likes to drink alcohol. Two filler characters played by actors Elisha Pratt and Omar Shariff Brunson Jr. The Professor is a character who has something important to do, help Rebecca discover her origin, her family's past and the real reasons for her presence in the castle. The character is played by actor Chris Galust.
Marku is the villager who welcomes them at the castle, he will help them sell some things, but he seems to have other intentions. He is a friend of The Doctor, a character who will sell some drugs to John. The characters are played by Gentli Kame and Klodian Hoxha, actors unknown to me.
Shelly is the girl who travels with the group of friends, she really hates Rebecca and just wants to sleep with John, now more, as she will have a lot of money when they sell the castle. Castle Freak I recommend it if you have an open mind to productions of this type. I think I've been very clear in explaining the style of film it is. For me it is an excellent homage to Stuart Gordon. A remake that has all the elements we find in his films. I liked it, I was ecstatic with the scenes that others would find disgusting, for me it is a very funny movie.
