I LIKE TO WATCH #29 - The Matrix Resurrections

What's old is new again in the world of The Matrix Resurrections. Neo and Trinity resume their lives after the seemingly final results of the last film in the series, appearing to be reborn, with little memory of their former selves. But of course, that is about to change, in a big way...

Enter The Matrix

One of the first things I noticed about the flick, are the numerous clues and hidden Easter eggs contained within. This is a movie that needs watching more than once, as there's so much here to unpack. Due to the current crisis, I saw it on HBO Max, and you may want to as well. We were constantly pausing a scene to gather more information, and you will too.

Neo, now working for a game design firm, remembers The Matrix as a series of video games he's created. A chance meeting with Trinity, opens up a flood of memories, which tie them together in this current tale. I'm going to reveal as little of the plot as possible, so there will be no major spoilers here. This is one of those films that you need to see for yourself.

Old characters make delightful returns, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at who shows up and what in the world they're up to this time around. There's a decent amount of mind-bending action, but not nearly as much as earlier entries in the franchise.

Jessica Henwick plays Bugs, and this little scene-stealer is a welcome addition to the story. Her mission to find Neo, sets off a series of dynamic events, and she'll likely become a huge fan favorite. If you've noticed, I'm being cagey about how much information to share, as you really need to see this film in order to get the most out of it.

Carrie-Anne Moss, returns as Trinity, but her character really doesn't blossom until later on in the story. There are many timely flashbacks to important scenes from the other Matrix movies, in an attempt to tie everything together in the present.

You'll wonder how they handle using phones, and the iconic phone booth as a mode of travel, and here they update it well. The films length is just right at 2.5 hours, which doesn't feel long at all. The technology is current, with nods to the past, and there are car chases and explosions galore. If the first film was being made today, this is exactly what it would look like.

The ending scenes of The Matrix Resurrections. are powerful, poignant, and surprising. Neo's love for Trinity leads him to make a choice that will have a lasting impact for themselves and the world around them Without giving anything away, I'll just say that the movie sets up many possible pathways for even more Matrix films to come. So drop whatever you're doing, and see The Matrix Resurrections today. I'm going to go see it again!
