If you saw the first post I made of this anime, then you know the drill: Consummate professional at his hitman job, Golgo 13 is one of unwavering expression against the biggest pressure, and his streak of feats is continued in the next 4 episodes of the anime.
There's technically nothing you are completely missing if hearing about this from later episodes when the stories are episodic and as such don't have characters other than Golgo and occasionally his gunsmith of choice carryintg over, as well as how his introduction with a two kilometer shot at an airplane's cockpit in the first episode could easily be swapped with most of the other episodes with how he's often the center of an impossible feat.
In any case, this batch of episodes have something more varied than usual. Not only we see Golgo get really creative to fool the target, but also there's a bit more of story to the character surrounding it, one episode in particular really focusing about the lack of consequences in Golgo's success from a request because of who it was done to.
Oh, and from here onwards, I've been getting my brother to watch it with me :)
Episode 5: Alright I get it, you'll miss him
This is one where its a pretty long setup with how a guy asks a super experienced sniper that isn't Golgo 13 to kill his boss to become the new one.
The boss had been his mentor in trying to get his talent out with films after he dared him to get a blockbuster and pay back what it cost in one year or else be stuck working with him (he failed...but again, he would get polished over time and grow dearer to him), so while disappointed, he requests Golgo to kill the guy in the moment he would get shot instead. And obviously, dispose of the other sniper right after.
This one I'll admit that isn't much about the action but about how you see this Ted (the boss) and Bob (the hit) on flashbacks and then their last emotional dinner remembering good times when both know they got a hit on each other, Golgo asking for data to know the exact milisecond the other sniper aims down by a few centimeters and then pulls the trigger, and then how Golgo succesfully executes Bob's kill when the other sniper is about to move, shooting his finger and then headshots him as well.
Yeah...this one doesn't have as many words because its pretty straightforward yet more of this emotional story framing rather than Golgo's exploits, though you can look at this clip of how screwed that other sniper was when he died. But hoo boy, the next one...
Episode 6: HE DID WHAT WITH A BALLOON
Now this one is peak Golgo 13 doing an insane stratagem to get away with a very unlikely kill.
This one would be definitely best to watch, but even in words you can tell how insane it is to see. Hear me out.
Golgo gets in a city with elections, gets checked for a plastic toy gun but is allowed to keep it, gets his car opened by cops because they know its him and steal two things but Golgo takes out the toy gun and reports it as stolen as well, goes to the shooting gallery and humilliates the owner nonchalantly, then goes to the stadium where the target is, checked for metal and in his pockets but he's holding nothing but balloons.
Turns out he hid a bullet in his mouth, the "toy gun" made of PPS Polymer plastic that was actually capable of firing it inside one of the balloons, shot the target, and then had one of his balloons fly away with the gun.
The mystery behind the toy gun disappearance and how it could work, why he even reported it as stolen, and his stunt at the shooting gallery are all unraveled by the detectives trying to pin the murder on him...only Golgo to call a lawyer, have him assure that without a gun for evidence he can't be framed, and for one of them to slip that they did NOT take the gun, admitting they did open his car and stole from him, meaning that they were completely set up to have NOTHING to possily indict Golgo without looking like they are trying to frame him.
And with that, he walks out of the stadium, scott-free, after having done the kill.
John Wick got insane reaction and trigger finger, and James Bond got super solid wits, but you have to hand it to Golgo 13 for having that level of creativity and the guts to carry out the plan without a sweat.
Episode 7: So it depends on who's had it, huh?
This is the one I mention isn't entirely about Golgo's task but the characters surrounding it: We see at the beginning this Thomas Simpson guy play on the violin- only for the G string to break, freeze in panic and then get booed away in shame. That moment left him with trauma that doesn't allow him to play at all in front of others, and when he hears that he got dropped from the charity concert he was set to play, replaced by his rival Kerensky, he can't handle it.
So he hires Golgo 13 to shoot the G string of his violin while he's performing the same song that requires it he played that fateful day, only to see him suffer the same humillation he did.
We do get Golgo analyze recordings of a previous performance of Kerensky with the song and goes frame by frame to find the exact opening to shoot the string without harming the violin, and then see him get to the camera room to do the shot.
He nails the shot. Kerensky's string is broken, and he's left confused. Everyone is left speechless, and Thomas looks prideful when he expects his breakdown.
Kerensky just silently loosens the D string and continues playing the song
Golgo straight up leaves after that- he got paid to hit that string, he did it. It does make for an interesting conclusion of how even with all the setup of being paid and do that for what Thomas expected to be a repeat of his own humillation, the difference with Kerensky is that he just...adjusted and kept the show going.
So rather than a story solely focused on Golgo's insane skill, which is noted by Kerensky's guards, it rather happens to be a guy that shrunk in humillation and trauma after a string acident...and then how a much more humble violinist has the same "accident" but doesn't let it stop him.
Didn't expect a message like that on a show like this, huh?
Episode 8: Bulletproof, not Golgo-proof
This one goes about a mafia boss being abducted by another family to spit where their money was, only for him to admit that he had hired a hitman to end with the live of their boss.
Golgo got hired by said mafia boss to deal with the other one because they had stolen his territory, and while he's preparing to go with the job, not only he hears that the target's room in the building got bulletproof glass, but also that his client had died and been found in the garbage. His wife implored him to not go after them at that point.
But Golgo? He took the job, he's doing the job. The client had actually been found with a smile in his death, because he knew he would do it no matter what.
We had a scene of the target's three crooks trying to assault Golgo only for them to get quickly shot, only for that to be a trap by another one to record Golgo's draw technique and to pass it down to their expert hit squad.
Golgo heads to his position to shoot the target in his bulletproof glass building, and the hit squad awaiting outside hear several shots, assuming that he panicked and kept trying to hit him, then were ready to assault him inside while shaken.
Golgo instead calmly appears outside, and as the three guys stare at him to draw...a car driving by gives Golgo the opening to block the bullets with his briefcase and get away.
The guy who arrived in the car came to say that the boss had been shot dead. Golgo used an M16 and then shot with pinpoint precision on an exact point of the glass to break through it. It ends with the guys chasing him down the building, but of course, they are all shot dead.
Another clip here for you to see the quick draw and bulletproof glass kills, because I can get that it might be hard to imagine how cool these look in motion when you only have pictures.
The current conclusion
I have to add that the anime is adapting chapters from the manga, which makes sense, but I bring that up because that arcade game I had mentioned in the previous post that is how I found Golgo 13 had playable forms of two of the stories I mentioned today: Shooting the G-String on the violin which takes a very difficult level of precision while also having that timing to see the right opening or else you'll hit the violin, and the Bulletproof Glass shooting where you have to mash that trigger in the exact spot you want the bullet to land for it to break through the glass...and you'd have to adjust lower than the initial resting place of the target's head because he'll crouch in the moment you start shooting- unless you're that fast at mashing.
I bring that up because its cool to see the story behind those two missions in particular when what I first knew of them was "okay how in the world do I even do this" when trying to play it myself (the violin mission) and still having to figure out a way to mash while keeping the cursor steady for the bullet to finally go through the glass.
That aside, one of the next episodes is actually one that I had read in the first chapters of the manga before starting the anime, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out in animated form. Though I did check briefly and Duke does have a slight grin when saying this line, but it will never have the same energy and level of joy his face in this stupid panel brought me.
(And for context, the early manga chapters did have some more smug-ass grin moments from him, unlike later where this would be considered uncharacteristic)

El jefe había sido su mentor para intentar sacar su talento con películas después de que le retara a conseguir un éxito de taquilla y devolverle lo que le costó en un año o de lo contrario quedarse pegado trabajando con él (fracasó...pero de nuevo, se puliría con el tiempo y se haría más querido para él), así que aunque decepcionado, le pide a Golgo que matara al tipo en el momento en el que le dispararían en su lugar. Y obviamente, deshacerse del otro francotirador justo después.
Esta admito que no tiene mucho que ver con la acción sino con cómo ves a Ted (el jefe) y Bob (el objetivo) en flashbacks y luego su última cena emotiva recordando buenos tiempos cuando ambos saben que se han dado un golpe mutuamente, Golgo pidiendo datos para saber el milisegundo exacto en que el otro francotirador apunta hacia abajo unos centímetros y luego aprieta el gatillo, y luego cómo Golgo ejecuta con éxito el asesinato de Bob cuando el otro francotirador está a punto de moverse, disparándole en el dedo y luego le dispara también en la cabeza.

Tengo que añadir que el anime está adaptando capítulos del manga, lo cual tiene sentido, pero lo saco a colación porque ese juego arcade que había mencionado en el post anterior que es como encontré Golgo 13 tenía formas jugables de dos de las historias que he mencionado hoy: Disparar a la cuerda G del violín, que requiere un nivel de precisión muy difícil y, al mismo tiempo, la sincronización necesaria para ver la abertura correcta o de lo contrario le darás al violín, y el disparo al cristal antibalas, en el que tienes que apretar el gatillo en el punto exacto en el que quieres que caiga la bala para que atraviese el cristal... y tendrías que ajustarlo más abajo que el lugar de reposo inicial de la cabeza del objetivo, porque se agachará en el momento en el que empieces a disparar... a menos que seas así de rápido apretando el gatillo.
Lo digo porque mola ver la historia que hay detrás de esas dos misiones en particular cuando lo primero que supe de ellas fue "vale, ¿cómo demonios hago esto?" cuando intentaba jugar yo mismo (la misión del violín) y como tenía que encontrar la manera de pulsar rápido mientras mantenía el cursor fijo para que la bala atravesara finalmente el cristal.
Aparte de eso, uno de los próximos episodios es uno de los que había leído en los primeros capítulos del manga antes de empezar el anime, así que será interesante ver cómo se desarrolla en forma animada. Aunque lo he comprobado brevemente y Duke tiene una ligera sonrisa al decir esta frase, nunca tendrá la misma energía y el mismo nivel de alegría que me produjo su cara en este estúpido panel.
"Hacer que baje la cabeza no hará tu cuerpo de enano más grande."
(Y para contextualizar, los primeros capítulos del manga tenían más momentos de sonrisa de suficiencia, a diferencia de los posteriores, en los que esto se consideraría poco característico)
