Stone-faced hitman, as formidable as he looks, and as skillful as the fearful whispers of his name as the best professional in his job imply. Only needs the bullets the job will take, never missing even the most impossible of shots, and always making sure to do the job as long as it is paid- don't ever try to go behind his back though, or else you'll pay the price in blood.
The oldest manga that's still on-going, even after the passing of its creator Takao Saito thanks to his wish of the manga continuing in the hands of his own production studio, and has the record for being continued non-stop for 52 years until 2020 due to the pandemic.
A franchise that I discovered because of stumbling upon an arcade game that I briefly discussed in another topic, Golgo 13 is comparable in style and in sturdyness as the more internationally known spy "007" James Bond, which makes sense when the author had adapted 007 stories to manga before creating this one, but is a much more sinister man in the frame of his job and being ready to kill any target for whoever pays him, even if their client dies before the hit is done.
I'll talk about my experience so far with not only the three episodes I've watched of the 2008 anime; I also had read 15 chapters of the manga, but there's quite a lot to read there even when not everything of that manga has been officially or unofficially translated to English.
An unstoppable force
If we are to discuss only the anime, as well as possibly the older OVAs and movies as well, then Duke Togo, alias Golgo 13, is already quite established in its super stoic demeanor and unbreakable cool, and perfect accuracy for whenever he has to do his job with a firearm- already highlighted with the first two episodes of the anime.
For example, that line of not trying to get behind his back, is not only figurative for any traitors trying to kill him, but also literal. He does NOT allow clients contacting him to be behind him, so on elevators or rooms, he's shown to keep his back resting on a wall.
That menial detail alone is enough to communicate that he knows very well his job, with anyone he meets from his professional name being a potential danger, and he also has a rule to not have clients contact him again after the initial contract is executed. Whatever happens next will be enough to let them know.
Episode 1: Impossible Headshot? Not for him
The first episode involves a criminal hijacking a plane with a bomb threat, and because the SWAT snipers can't get a shot from the 2 kilometers they have to hide away to not be seen, Golgo 13 is hired by a man frmo the government to end it for once before the plane leaves off. After the contracting, Golgo then pays the expert underground gunsmith Dave to make him a customized sniper rifle in 3 days for the job, kills some time by going to bed with a woman but gets interrupted by some thugs trying to gun him down (of course, that doesn't go well for them), leaves, and as he goes to get his weapon.
The plane was about to take off but a tire gets shot by a SWAT to save time- only that this causes the plane's angle to change and Golgo has to adjust by having to snipe from a track even farther away from the plane...
But of course, from two kilometers away aiming into the aircraft's cockpit, Golgo aces the headshot.
Just from this episode, you can get the essence of Golgo 13: He always prepares for the job, is impressively acurate with distances people otherwise would consider impossible...and he's skilled at bed.
That last part is not an one-time thing either- the man is often depicted to be a woman magnet and can accept requests to go to bed from most that happen to be related with the client...or even the target. Though I have to emphasize that his usual expression often does not change in these cases, so it can be kind of hilarious to see this hitman doing what he does with the exact same resting face whether he's pretending to be normal or with the weapon at hand.
Going back to his hitman skills, the second and third episodes also made for stories revolving Golgo 13's unbelievable aim.
Episode 2: Bet you can't make anyone believe that one
The second episode was so far the most creative because the hit is done early in the first half of the episode, and the rest revolves on the police trying to find the culprit, tracking down the shot to come from his hotel room. How did he get away from this, even when the officer even found the rifle used in the garbage disposal vent?
Well, he didn't have to say much to convince them from his apparent innocence. The statistics did.
The case started with doubts about the shot being done due to the specific hotel room and absurd distance during a sunset, but still was considered plausible...it was buried when they received new data of the shot being done with a crosswind. Even after they let him go because of how they deemed the shot impossible from his location, the officer that wanted to take him was still very convinced Golgo did it. He just admitted that there was no way that they could prove such an insane shot could be done by ANY man.
Episode 3: Who needs hyper technological weapons when you got good aim
The third episode revolves around this other gunsmith that made modified assault rifles with digital laser scopes plus a distance-compensating auto aim system and had two expert mercenaries trained with them to hunt down Golgo, who was first busy with the job from a french car manufacturer to shoot a tire from the lead Japanese car in a rally event for it to flip over during a high-speed turn and leave no traces.
Whether something happened to the drivers was not his problem even when his task was making a car flip over and then explode. Would have to check the manga if it also happens like this, but at least in the anime, the drivers do get out before the car explodes with the single bullet of evidence burning with it. In any case, this is a reminder that Golgo 13 is above all things, a professional dedicated to do the task regardless of what he has to shoot.
After Golgo does that, the mercenaries go after him until the dark of the night, where Golgo put himself in a position for a car's headlights to be behind him and blind the mercenary while he get his own shot, then dealt with the other mercenary as he went down a slope to make his rifle's auto-aiming calibration fail its shots- only to then flex his skill with making another improbable shot from a slope.
Episode 4: Okay that went from 0 to 100 fast
So remember that what I said about Golgo being a woman magnet?
Well, this episode starts with a mafia boss's woman, who after is shown to be tired to be with him, hires Golgo...and as he sees him while he checks minuciously the room for anything suspicious, she starts imagining his ripped boddy...and being with him in bed. You do see a few seconds of that.
...Yeah, this anime you don't want your kids to watch with you.
But getting over that, we see how the boss's henchmen do their moves: We see Ricky trying to get his hands on Linda despite knowing she's from the boss...and then Billy (who looks a bit like Golgo) happens to show a draw speed comparable to Golgo himself when he tests it with a dropped magazine.
Oh, and Ricky gets screwed over and thrown off a building because the boss found the erased note Linda used to meet Golgo at the hotel but Linda of course dumps the blame on him.
The episode continues with how Linda seems to still be awaiting for Golgo by calling him- the hitman that does not contact anyone twice, while the mafia actually figure out she was with him, and as they DO know who he is, they figure out she got a hit on the boss.
As the brother of Ricky and gang try to ambush Marty but all get killed by Billy, Golgo kills Marty while Billy was distracted, who then takes Linda away to a parking lot...where Golgo was awaiting. Both stare at each other until a quick draw ensues- Billy of course being the loser, but claiming that he could have got him had it not been for holding Linda while trying to get her safe.
For what this seemed to be, there was a tiny bit more depth for each character: The boss Marty who looked more depressed after Linda was not having none of it and after finding out about the hit on him, Billy who seemed concerned about the boss and also admitted that didn't want to himself be one...and then there's how Linda seemed to be quite obsessed with having Mr. Duke Togo for herself in Florida, as emphasized with two more dream glimpses.
When Golgo rejects her, she gets angry, and tries to take the gun to retaliate.
You can imagine how this ends.
The true unexpected thing is how after we see her pass out in a pool of her blood after getting shot, and Golgo walks away, that cool guitar jingle at the end of each episode so far still plays out.
Talk about disrespect from not just Golgo 13 the man, but also Golgo 13 the anime 😂
The current conclusion
Both the manga and anime are episodic, and aside from Dave showing up so far in two out of the three episodes in the anime I've watched (and likely will keep appearing, between how he's Duke's man to do his special weaponry and even had got his own manga spin-off- though its completely untranslated), every episode or chapter is always a new story and a new target for Golgo to dispose of in the calculated and clever ways only this renowned force of nature, only moved to do his task, whether it would be considered for the greater good or not.
This could be considered just a slice of Golgo 13 overall, and even when its 50 episodes, these don't adapt a specific linear amount of stories or adapt the 50 first chapters, but rather mix and match several chapters in any order, so you might get to see some stories from the manga happen earlier or later than what you'd expect...though with how many there are, it would be hard to remember the specific chapter numbers.
So far, the anime does its job of adding ambience with the soundtrack and the ever important gunshots, as well as featuring subtle dark coloring which fits with the image of this unwavering man's stories always being about carrying a hit, and the kind of people that request these or even are targeted. It definitely frames Golgo 13 succesfully as a man that you never want to double cross, or be on his list, because at that point you are already dead.
Oh, and the opening song is awesome. Go take a listen to Naifu - Take The Wave whenever you can.

Una franquicia que descubrí por tropezarme con un juego arcade del que hablé brevemente en otro tema, Golgo 13 es comparable en estilo y en robustez al más internacionalmente conocido espía "007" James Bond, lo cual tiene sentido cuando el autor había adaptado historias de 007 al manga antes de crear ésta, pero es un hombre mucho más siniestro en el marco de su trabajo y estando dispuesto a matar cualquier objetivo para quien le pague, incluso si su cliente muere antes de que el golpe esté hecho.
Hablaré de mi experiencia hasta ahora no sólo con los tres episodios que he visto del anime de 2008; también había leído 15 capítulos del manga, pero hay bastante que leer allí incluso cuando no todo de ese manga ha sido traducido oficial o extraoficialmente al inglés.
Una fuerza imparable
Si vamos a hablar sólo del anime, así como posiblemente también de las OVAs y películas más antiguas, entonces Duke Togo, alias Golgo 13, ya está bastante establecido en su comportamiento súper estoico y su frialdad inquebrantable, así como su perfecta precisión para cuando tiene que hacer su trabajo con un arma de fuego, ya destacada con los dos primeros episodios del anime.
Por ejemplo, esa frase de no intentar ponerse a sus espaldas, no es sólo figurativa para cualquier traidor que intente matarle, sino también literal. NO permite que los clientes que contactan con él estén detrás de él, así que en ascensores o habitaciones, se muestra apoyando su espalda en una pared.
Ese detalle insignificante por sí solo es suficiente para comunicar que conoce muy bien su trabajo, siendo cualquier persona que conozca de su nombre profesional un peligro potencial, y también tiene la norma de no permitir que los clientes vuelvan a contactar con él una vez ejecutado el contrato inicial. Lo que ocurra a continuación será suficiente para que lo sepan.
Episodio 1: ¿Imposible Headshot? No para él
En el primer episodio un criminal secuestra un avión con una amenaza de bomba, y como los francotiradores del SWAT no consiguen disparar desde los 2 kilómetros que tienen que esconderse para no ser vistos, Golgo 13 es contratado por un hombre frmo el gobierno para acabar con él de una vez antes de que el avión despegue. Tras la contratación, Golgo paga al experto armero clandestino Dave para que le haga un rifle de francotirador a medida en 3 días para el trabajo, pasa el tiempo yéndose a la cama con una mujer pero es interrumpido por unos matones que intentan dispararle (por supuesto, eso no les sale bien), se marcha, y mientras va a por su arma.
El avión estaba a punto de despegar pero un SWAT dispara a un neumático para ahorrar tiempo, sólo que esto hace que el ángulo del avión cambie y Golgo tenga que ajustarse teniendo que disparar desde una pista aún más alejada del avión...
Pero, por supuesto, desde dos kilómetros de distancia apuntando a la cabina del avión, Golgo acierta el tiro en la cabeza.
Sólo con este episodio, se puede captar la esencia de Golgo 13: siempre se prepara para el trabajo, es impresionantemente preciso con distancias que de otro modo la gente consideraría imposibles... y es hábil en la cama.
Esta última parte tampoco es algo que ocurra una sola vez: a menudo se describe al hombre como un imán para las mujeres y puede aceptar peticiones para ir a la cama de la mayoría que resulten estar relacionadas con el cliente... o incluso con el objetivo. Aunque tengo que recalcar que su expresión habitual a menudo no cambia en estos casos, por lo que puede ser un poco hilarante ver a este asesino a sueldo haciendo lo que hace con exactamente la misma cara de descanso tanto si finge ser normal como si está con el arma en la mano.
Volviendo a sus habilidades como asesino a sueldo, el segundo y el tercer episodio también dieron pie a historias que giraban en torno a la increíble puntería de Golgo 13.
Episodio 2: Apuesto a que no puedes hacer que nadie se lo crea
El segundo episodio fue hasta ahora el más creativo porque el golpe se da temprano en la primera mitad del episodio, y el resto gira en torno a la policía tratando de encontrar al culpable, rastreando que el disparo provenga de su habitación de hotel. ¿Cómo se libró de esto, incluso cuando el agente encontró el rifle utilizado en el respiradero del triturador de basura?
Bueno, no tuvo que decir mucho para convencerlos de su aparente inocencia. Las estadísticas lo hicieron.
El caso empezo con dudas sobre el disparo debido a la habitacion especifica del hotel y la absurda distancia durante un atardecer, pero aun asi fue considerado plausible...fue enterrado cuando recibieron nuevos datos de que el disparo fue hecho con viento cruzado. Incluso después de que lo soltaran por considerar imposible el disparo desde su ubicación, el agente que quería llevárselo seguía muy convencido de que Golgo lo había hecho. ***Admitió que no había forma de probar que un disparo tan descabellado pudiera ser realizado por CUALQUIER hombre.
Episodio 3: ¿Quién necesita armas hipertecnológicas cuando tienes buena puntería?
El tercer episodio gira en torno a otro armero que fabricaba rifles de asalto modificados con visores láser digitales y un sistema de puntería automática con compensación de distancia, y que tenía a dos mercenarios expertos entrenados con ellos para cazar a Golgo, que primero estaba ocupado con el encargo de un fabricante de coches francés de disparar a un neumático del coche japonés líder en una prueba de rally para que volcara durante una curva a alta velocidad y no dejara huellas.
Que les pasara algo a los pilotos no era su problema incluso cuando su tarea era hacer que un coche volcara y luego explotara. Tendría que comprobar en el manga si también pasa así, pero al menos en el anime, los pilotos salen antes de que el coche explote con la única bala de pruebas ardiendo con él. En cualquier caso, esto es un recordatorio de que Golgo 13 es, por encima de todas las cosas, un profesional dedicado a hacer la tarea independientemente de lo que tenga que disparar.
Después de que Golgo haga eso, los mercenarios van tras él hasta la oscuridad de la noche, donde Golgo se pone en posición para que los faros de un coche estén detrás de él y cieguen al mercenario mientras consigue su propio disparo, y luego se ocupa del otro mercenario mientras baja por una pendiente para hacer que la calibración de autoapuntado de su rifle falle sus disparos, sólo para luego flexionar su habilidad haciendo otro improbable disparo desde una pendiente.
Episodio 4: Ok eso fue de 0 a 100 rápido
¿Recordáis lo que dije de que Golgo es un imán para las mujeres?
Bueno, este episodio empieza con la mujer de un jefe de la mafia, que después de mostrarse cansada de estar con él, contrata a Golgo... y al verle mientras revisa minuciosamente la habitación en busca de algo sospechoso, ella empieza a imaginarse su cuerpo rasgado... y a estar con él en la cama.Sí que se ven unos segundos de eso.*
...Sí, este anime no quieres que tus hijos lo vean contigo.
Pero superando eso, vemos como los secuaces del jefe hacen sus movimientos: Vemos a Ricky intentando meterle mano a Linda a pesar de saber que es del jefe... y luego resulta que Billy (que se parece un poco a Golgo) muestra una velocidad de desenfunde comparable a la del propio Golgo cuando lo prueba con un cargador tirado.
Ah, y a Ricky lo joden y lo tiran de un edificio porque el jefe encuentra la nota borrada que Linda usó para encontrarse con Golgo en el hotel pero Linda, por supuesto, le echa la culpa a él.
El episodio continúa con cómo Linda parece seguir esperando a Golgo llamándole -el sicario que no contacta con nadie dos veces-, mientras la mafia se da cuenta de que estuvo con él, y como SÍ saben quién es, se dan cuenta de que ella le dio un golpe al jefe.
Mientras el hermano de Ricky y la banda intentan tender una emboscada a Marty pero todos son asesinados por Billy, Golgo mata a Marty mientras Billy estaba distraído, quien entonces se lleva a Linda a un aparcamiento...donde Golgo estaba esperando. Ambos se miran fijamente hasta que se produce un rápido empate, siendo Billy, por supuesto, el perdedor, pero alegando que podría haberlo conseguido de no haber sido porque retuvo a Linda mientras intentaba ponerla a salvo.
Para lo que esto parecía ser, había un poco más de profundidad para cada personaje: El jefe Marty, que parecía más deprimido después de que Linda no se diera por vencida y se enterara del golpe que le habían dado, Billy, que parecía preocupado por el jefe y también admitía que él mismo no quería serlo... y luego está cómo Linda parecía estar bastante obsesionada con tener al Sr. Duke Togo para ella sola en Florida, como se pone de relieve con otros dos atisbos oníricos.

Lo verdaderamente inesperado es que después de verla desmayarse en un charco de sangre tras recibir un disparo, y de que Golgo se marche, sigue sonando ese jingle de guitarra tan guay que suena al final de cada episodio.
Menuda falta de respeto, no sólo por parte de Golgo 13, el hombre, sino también de Golgo 13, el anime.
La conclusión actual
Tanto el manga como el anime son episódicos, y aparte de que Dave ha aparecido hasta ahora en dos de los tres episodios del anime que he visto (y probablemente seguirá apareciendo, entre que es el hombre de Duke para hacer su armamento especial e incluso ha conseguido su propio manga spin-off- aunque está completamente sin traducir), cada episodio o capítulo es siempre una nueva historia y un nuevo objetivo del que Golgo puede deshacerse de la forma calculada e inteligente que solo esta renombrada fuerza de la naturaleza, solo se mueve para hacer su tarea, tanto si se considera por el bien mayor como si no.
Esto podría considerarse sólo una rebanada de Golgo 13 en general, e incluso cuando son 50 episodios, éstos no adaptan una cantidad lineal específica de historias ni adaptan los 50 primeros capítulos, sino que mezclan y combinan varios capítulos en cualquier orden, por lo que es posible que veas algunas historias del manga suceder antes o después de lo que esperarías... aunque con la cantidad que hay, sería difícil recordar los números específicos de los capítulos.
Hasta el momento, el anime cumple con su cometido de ambientar con la banda sonora y los siempre importantes disparos, además de presentar un sutil colorido oscuro que encaja con la imagen de las historias de este hombre inquebrantable, siempre relacionadas con llevar a cabo un golpe, y el tipo de personas que los solicitan o incluso son objetivo de ellos. Definitivamente, Golgo 13 es un hombre al que nunca querrás traicionar, o estar en su lista, porque en ese momento ya estás muerto.
