En aquel entonces, yo era directora de un centro de rehabilitación para mujeres con diversas dificultades en el estado de Miranda, acá en Venezuela.

Fue allí donde una joven con problemas de adicción, conducta y carácter severo llegó con seis meses de gestación. Desde el momento en que ingresó al centro, expresó su deseo de no querer ese embarazo. Siempre tratamos de hablar con los jóvenes de la importancia de tener un hijo y de reincorporarse a la sociedad y dejar de su adicción esos problemas parte del pasado.
Pero ella nos refería que no se trataba de no querer al ser que aún no había nacido, sino de su temor a enfrentar la situación una vez que volviera a la calle. Temía tener que abandonar al bebé en una esquina o que alguien se lo llevara y le ocurriera algo. Siempre mencionaba que quería darlo en adopción para asegurarse de que tuviera un buen hogar, ya que ella sabía que no podía criarlo.

It was there that a young woman with addiction, behavioral and severe character problems arrived six months pregnant. From the moment she entered the center, she expressed her desire not to want the pregnancy. We always tried to talk to the young people about the importance of having a child and reintegrating into society and leaving her addiction problems in the past.
But she told us that it was not about not wanting the unborn child, but about her fear of facing the situation once she was back on the street. She was afraid that she would have to abandon the baby on a street corner or that someone would take him and something would happen to him. She always mentioned that she wanted to give him up for adoption to make sure he had a good home, since she knew she couldn't raise him.

Escuchar esto de una joven fue una experiencia impactante y difícil de creer, nunca había atendido un caso así . A pesar de nuestras esperanzas de que cambiaría de opinión tras el nacimiento del niño, ella tomó la decisión de irse del centro de rehabilitación y dejar al bebé sin decir una palabra. En la institución se armó un revuelo ya que el bebé tan solo tenía 10 días de nacido, fue en vano buscar a su mamá, lo volvería a dejar en cualquier lugar.
Desde ese momento, mi familia y yo lo acogimos como uno más en nuestro hogar. No dudamos del amor que le daríamos, y comprendimos que él era nuestro pequeño amado tesoro. Con el tiempo, noté cambios en su desarrollo y busqué especialistas, porque sabemos que una adicción trae consecuencias en los fetos. Aunque no se trataba de adicciones, sí enfrentaba desafíos cerebrales. Emma se convirtió en una parte fundamental de nuestra familia cada dia, a pesar de sus cinco patologías: TEA, TDAH, lisencefalia, epilepsia y trastornos del sueño. Mi esposo, nuestros hijos adultos y yo nos involucramos en su vida, cada uno desempeñando su papel.

Hearing this from a young woman was a shocking experience and hard to believe, I had never attended a case like this before. Despite our hopes that she would change her mind after the birth of the child, she made the decision to leave the rehabilitation center and leave the baby without saying a word. There was a commotion in the institution because the baby was only 10 days old, it was useless to look for his mother, she would leave him again anywhere.
From that moment on, my family and I welcomed him as one more in our home. We did not doubt the love we would give him, and we understood that he was our beloved little treasure. Over time, I noticed changes in his development and sought specialists, because we know that an addiction brings consequences in fetuses. Although these were not addictions, he did face brain challenges. Emma became a fundamental part of our family every day, despite her five pathologies: ASD, ADHD, lissencephaly, epilepsy and sleep disorders. My husband, our adult children and I became involved in her life, each playing our part.

No ha sido fácil, pero Ema merecía un futuro con estabilidad, comprensión y, sobre todo, amor.
A lo largo de los años, hemos luchado por su custodia legal, y ahora estamos en la etapa final del proceso, les confieso que es un proceso agotador. Estoy ansiosa por ver nuestros apellidos en su partida de nacimiento. Legalmente, él merece una familia que lo represente. Aunque Ema no comprende completamente la situación, siempre le explicamos.
Lo que él realmente quiere es que lo mimen y le permitan jugar, pero tenemos que explicarle, porque visitamos un jugador y para qué es, los niños como él son niños muy sensoriales y por esa razón siempre tenemos que hablar con él.

It has not been easy, but Ema deserved a future with stability, understanding and, above all, love.
Over the years, we have fought for her legal custody, and now we are in the final stage of the process, which I confess is an exhausting process. I can't wait to see our last names on his birth certificate. Legally, he deserves a family to represent him. Although Ema does not fully understand the situation, we always explain it to him.
What he really wants is to be pampered and allowed to play, but we have to explain to him, why we are visiting a player and what it is for, children like him are very sensory children and for that reason we always have to talk to him.
