Makjang is defined as an over-the-top drama that defies logic and puts forward ridiculous but, and it is a big but, entertaining stuff.
So, a bit like our friend 
Here are ten plot point that are MANDATORY if you write a makjang.
1- Memory Loss - Where am I? Who am I? No, this is not an existential exploration. If makjangs are anything to go by, Amnesia is as common as er common cold in Korea. You might not break a bone if you fall but memory loss is certain. This leads me to wonder what happens to these people's jobs. Do they just show up and say they can't remember a thing and just sit on their desk idly?
2- The leads would have a Childhood connection : These dramas support child marriages by showing flashbacks of the romantic lead who met as kids and one of them decided to marry the other because they'd given them their last piece of candy.
3- The poor little rich boy - An elitist jerk who is mean to the quintessential poor but brave girl. But he's a jerk because of a trauma so that's okay. The heroin heroine helps him get over it by magically acquiring a clinical psychology degree overnight.
4- The evil Mother-in-law : How evil can MILs get? Throwing a glass of water on their son's poor GF's face to mess up her perfectly natural make-up? Handing her an envelope full of cash to get them to break-up with her precious one? Making her do all the kitchen work when she comes back from her office after fighting with her boss? (This got too real)
5- Good boys finish last - There is always that second lead who is the antithesis of the jerk but due to unfathomable reasons and possible masochism on the part of the female lead, she friendzones him into oblivion.
6- **The Try- angle ** - There are always two people who like the same person, and the triangle is not acute but obtuse. One person takes third wheeling too seriously and goes off the wheels. The main lead is not interested in them because their personality would make a snake gag.
However, they think that forcibly getting a bf/gf to love you is better than the weird person on Tinder.
7- The Noble sacrifice - You might have heard of stretching a buck but behold here stretching your luck. Makjang writers appear to be a close-knit community that when called on to do filler episodes employs the same trope - separate the main leads due to some stupid albeit noble reason.
8- Long-lost kids - The crime statistics for child kidnapping in Korea are as alarming as the amnesia ones. Every rich household has somehow lost their heir and have spent twenty years looking for them when they were right under their noses working in their company in a lowly position.
Just to really stick it to them, they were really mean to their kid who then gets miffed when they find the truth and that's 5 episodes in the bank for writers.
9- The Mistress Stress - Korean conglomerate chairpersons or Chaebols as portrayed in these kdramas are people who believe in diversification in business and personal lives. Having a wife and legitimate children is sooo middle-class. The more women, the more children to manage cross-functional divisions.
