One day last week, I received an invitation to a birthday dinner in Sintra. As I still live a little way away, and as I'd taken the day off that day, I decided to go early (about three hours earlier than planned) and discover a little of the magic of the place.
Anyone who has visited my country has probably also visited Sintra. A place of great heritage, landscape, architectural and historical value!
I'd been to this quinta before, at an event that took place in one of the open areas at the entrance, but I didn't have the opportunity to discover everything there was to see for myself.
Anyone who knows me knows that I like to explore spaces, to let myself be carried away a little by the options that arise, without having the pressure to do what is most documented, or what is initially most ‘interesting’.
When I got there, I realized that I had just over an hour and a half to explore the Quinta calmly.
To visit the palace, although it looked very interesting, it didn't arouse my curiosity and I opted to take the path that was immediately to my right, after passing a small bridge that crossed the creek that probably gives the estate its name.
After just over a kilometer and a half, and having already passed the main entrance to the palace, I came across a dirt track, wide at first, which led me down it almost immediately.
That day I also had to make a short video to send to a friend's wife, who will soon be celebrating her 50th birthday!
As such, I looked for a more secluded environment, with surroundings where human presence was not so noticeable, and where there were no buildings that could map my location... Maybe it's paranoia, but in some ways I like photographs and videos to be timeless.
In other situations, it's exactly the opposite. And I try to make sure there's a little note that's like a stamp of time or location.
As I made my way up the hillside, along the dirt track, which gradually became narrower and overgrown with vegetation and brambles, I eventually came to a bit of an intersection where I came across a sign on the ground, painted on a tile indicating the path to take to a chapel and in the other direction what appeared to be the symbol of a viewpoint.
At first impulse, and as I had more or less run out of time, I thought I'd go and visit the viewpoint, but something made me choose exactly the other route... and that's a good thing!
After a few meters, about 150 meters, I came to a hill, where there was the religious building that had been indicated earlier.
The chapel, with a few religious symbols on the outside and few signs of abandonment, was right there in front of me.
The entrance door was enclosed by an old but well-kept iron railing, and you could look inside.
I didn't think I'd be able to capture it with my cell phone camera, since it was the inside and it wasn't very well lit, as you can imagine, but the photos turned out more or less okay... Of course, there are some inevitable hand movements, because although I leaned on the railings, I didn't have a tripod or more advanced equipment for recording.
I confess that I was pleased to see that I had managed to record the tiles in shades of deep blue, which reminded me of those in the chapel where I attended so many ceremonies as a child!
I set off, as I only had about forty minutes left.... And the path got more and more interesting, with brambles and wild plants dried out by the weather, ready to sow their seeds, so that in six months' time they would sprout from the earth again with the strength and green energy that characterizes them.
Trying to return to the starting point, I still passed a part of the path where I could see the Serra de Sintra, and the beautiful sky above my head...
And it was in this location that I decided to record the short video for my friend.
Returning to the main courtyard, I still passed by a small tank, which I'm sure would serve as a reserve for what could be a water reservoir for the most varied tasks (gardening, etc.), and I took the opportunity to take a few more photos of the water mirror.
A marble statue added the final touch I was looking for...
I'm sure I'll return to this garden at some point!
I hope you enjoyed my walk around Quinta da Ribafria.
I hope you enjoyed this tour with me. I spent a very pleasant evening... And to top it all off, I can tell you that I went to a friend's birthday dinner that I hadn't seen for a long time, which was the golden key to rounding off a day well spent!
Cheers 🍀
Bem Hajam 🍀
