I traveled to Augsburg(Germany) to learn their history
Hello travel lovers
Last weekend I traveled (in the interest of work) to the city of Augsburg in Germany to participate in a very important celebration for the members of the German community here in western Romania.
About a month ago, the phone rang on the other end of the line, a person who could hardly speak the Romanian language, he was a member of the German community who lived here in my commune and for about 30-40 years he has not set foot in Romania.
From this person we receive an invitation to participate in an event that they care a lot about, namely the celebration of the moment in German history when they first set foot here in my commune.
I participated in this event together with the mayor from our commune.
I left in the morning for Augsburg and it took me around 13 hours to get there, I drove a lot with few stops, and along the way I encountered a lot of highway works that increased my time to reach my destination.
Let me tell you a few words about the history of the "Swabians" in Romania
The Germans first came here to the west of Romania 250 years ago, and during the communist period, because of the system, all the Germans in my commune went to Germany, leaving behind their lifelong work, they had the right to take only a few things from their homes suitcases with personal items, nothing else.
All the furnished houses were taken by the communist regime without being returned to the old owners.
During the communist regime, these houses were given to Romanian citizens for free and after a certain period these houses were generally sold by those who received them for almost free.
This event involves remembering traditions, traditional costumes, traditional dances, but also socializing with the descendants of the first Germans who came to Romania.
For me, it was in the event that marked me, I managed to socialize with these people (who still haven't forgotten to speak Romanian) and see again on their faces the emotion of telling their history.
The program started around 10:30 at the church in Augsburg, I participated in the ceremony which was loaded with feelings of remembrance.
The beauty of traditional costumes is impressive, I would be happy to know your opinion about it, maybe you have such events in the area where you live.
After the ceremony at the church was over, the event moved to a restaurant in the area where the participants could dance with these young people dressed in folk costumes.
Let me not forget to tell you that we were received very well here with traditional Romanian food and some amazing cakes.
In conclusion, I spent a few fantastic days in Augsburg where I discovered the history of the first Germans who set foot in western Romania, I enriched my knowledge about the history of my commune.
