Black Eagle Passage, the portal in time in the heart of Oradea, Romania
Hello travellers from all over the world
Oradea is located in the west of Romania and this city is very rich from a historical point of view, I would like very much to show you my experiences here, so come with me to cross the Black Eagle Passage.
But before we got to the heart of the city we made a few more stops to enjoy the most delicious ice cream, and yes, I admit, I had enough, what can I do if they have so many varieties.
The next stop was in front of the State Theatre, an imposing building, unfortunately due to lack of time we didn't have enough time to visit its interior.
So we turn our attention to this site which in recent years has become very popular.
Access through this passage is free, inside the passage there are several restaurants and bars because here after sunset everything comes alive, it is a very lively place.
The architecture of this place is amazing
The stained-glass window with the black eagle, which has become an emblem of the ensemble, was made in 1909 in the Ordean workshop of Neumann K. Great attention was paid to all the details and symbols used. The curvilinear floral style, typical of the Berlin Secession, nevertheless makes concessions to the eclectic vision, with neo-baroque nostalgia, much appreciated at the time. Ornaments are found on all interior elements (ceilings, vaults, windows, doors, panelling, railings, walls, columns, stained glass).
Construction
Demolition of the old building began on 19 November 1906 and foundation work began in March 1907. Also in 1907 the "Black Eagle and Green Tree Joint Stock Company" ("Fekete Sas és Zöldfa szálloda és Vigadó Részvénytársaság") was established and registered at the Chamber of Commerce of Oradea in 1907. The directors and main shareholders were Dr. Ede Kurländer and Dr. Emil Adorján, who deposited a capital of 50 000 kroner, divided into 50 shares.
In March it was decided that the builder Ferenc Sztarill (1859-1943) would be the contractor of the building, who on 6 April 1907 began the construction of the Black Eagle Complex.
Before long, problems began to appear. When they found out about the scale of construction in Oradea, brick suppliers doubled their prices. Emil Adorján turned out to be a skilled entrepreneur, setting up the Vesta brick factory, which supplied the 4 million bricks from which the palace was built.
The same solution was also adopted when banks raised interest rates extremely high and access to credit became very difficult: Ede Kurländer and Emil Adorján opened their own bank, the Hungarian Bank, in the interwar period known as the Industrial Bank.
In November 1907 the building was already covered, and was completed in December 1908, with the reception on 16 November 1908 and the festive opening in 1909.
The plan of the building is arranged according to the interior passage which has two galleries intersecting at right angles under a large glass dome and a third gallery with a ground floor, with an exit towards Vasile Alecsandri Street (made by Ferenc Sztarill in October 1908).
To pass through the Black Eagle passage you don't need much time, you have access here from three streets but if we pass through here it is very important to notice the attention to detail, personally I really liked that stained glass window that depicts the Black Eagle itself.
Dear visitors, if you have reached this point, it means that you have gone through the whole post and I thank you for that.
