Not all Seattle sights are as popular as the Space Needle. Some are quite curious and definitely unique. Today's post is about just such places. They include a stone troll under a motorway bridge and a park on a former factory site. Just read on to find out more about Seattle's rather crazy highlights!
Nicht alle Sehenswürdigkeiten von Seattle sind so populär, wie die Space Needle. Einige sind ziemlich kurios und definitiv einzigartig. Im heutigen Beitrag geht es genau solche Orte. Dazu zählen ein steinerner Troll unter einer Autobahnbrücke und ein Park auf einem ehemaligen Fabriksgelände. The first stop on my tour of unusual sights took me to Fremont – a vibrant neighbourhood known for its quirky, artistic atmosphere. It's home to a variety of unique shops, funky street art and a thriving arts scene. With its lively atmosphere, Fremont is a great place to explore and soak up the creative energy of Seattle. However, the neighbourhood is particularly known for its main sight.
Mein erster Stop auf meiner Tour zu den ungewöhnlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten führte mich nach Fremont – ein lebhaftes Viertel, das für seine eigenwillige, künstlerische Atmosphäre bekannt ist. Es beherbergt eine Vielzahl einzigartiger Geschäfte, skurriler Straßenkunst und eine blühende Kunstszene. Mit seiner lebendigen Atmosphäre ist Fremont ein großartiger Ort, um die kreative Energie von Seattle zu erkunden und aufzusaugen. Doch besonders bekannt ist das Viertel vor allem für seine Hauptsehenswürdigkeit.
The Troll is not your typical bridge dweller. This massive sculpture, officially known as the "Fremont Troll," resides beneath the Aurora Bridge. Carved out of concrete and rebar, it clutches a Volkswagen Beetle in one hand, seemingly ready to pounce. A popular tourist attraction, this quirky and artistic installation is a testament to Seattle's love for the unusual and whimsical. Right next to it, you will find a small troll forest. Of course, much of the surrounding area is dedicated to the troll as well. In addition to accommodation and shops named after him, there is also a Troll Alley.
Der Troll ist kein gewöhnlicher Brückenbewohner. Diese massive Skulptur, offiziell als der "Fremont Troll" bekannt, befindet sich unter der Aurora-Brücke. Aus Beton und Stahl gefertigt, hält er in einer Hand einen Volkswagen Käfer und scheint bereit zu einem Sprung. Als beliebte Touristenattraktion ist diese skurrile und künstlerische Installation ein Zeugnis für Seattles Vorliebe für das Ungewöhnliche und Verspielte. Gleich nebenan findet man ein kleines Troll-Wäldchen. Natürlich ist auch vieles in der Umgebung ganz dem Troll gewidmet. Neben Unterkünften und Lokalen, die nach ihm benannt sind, findet man auch eine Troll Alley.
After visiting this bizarre sight, I walked to the shore of Lake Union. It's a freshwater lake located entirely within the city limits of Seattle. Here I found a marina with beautiful views of the skyline on the opposite shore. But my real destination was Gas Works Park. After a few minutes walking I arrived at this unique and iconic green space. What sets it apart is the fact that it was once an industrial gasification plant and has been creatively repurposed into a public park. Here you can explore the remnants of the plant, including towering metal structures and rusted machinery, which provide a stark yet intriguing contrast to the park's lush greenery. The park also offered me another fantastic view of the Seattle skyline and Lake Union.
Nachdem ich diese bizarre Sehenswürdigkeit besucht hatte, spazierte ich zum Ufer des Lake Union. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Süßwassersee, der sich komplett innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen von Seattle befindet. Hier fand ich einen Yachthafen mit schönen Ausblicken auf die Skyline am gegenüberliegenden Ufer. Doch mein eigentliches Ziel war der Gas Works Park. Nach ein paar weiteren Gehminuten erreichte ich diese einzigartige und ikonische Grünfläche. Was sie besonders auszeichnet, ist die Tatsache, dass sie einst eine industrielle Vergasungsanlage war und kreativ in einen öffentlichen Park umgewandelt wurde. Besucher können die Überreste der Anlage erkunden, darunter hohe Metallstrukturen und verrostete Maschinen, die für einen markanten und dennoch faszinierenden Kontrast zur üppigen Vegetation des Parks sorgen. Der Park bot mir auch einen weiteren fantastischen Blick auf die Skyline von Seattle und den Lake Union.
Luckily, I had taken a small packed lunch with me. So I could sit down on the green meadow and enjoy a few sunny hours on this warm autumn day. I hope you enjoyed my impressions. However, I still saved the craziest sight of Seattle for my next and last post about the Emerald City. Stay tuned!
Zum Glück hatte ich mir ein kleines Lunch-Paket mitgenommen. So konnte ich mich auf der grünen Wiese niederlassen und in Ruhe ein paar sonnige Stunden an diesem warmen Herbsttag genießen.
