Sharon gorge nature park, Queensland, Australia

From time to time both the kids and I have moments where we are not in the mood for books, this day was one of those days. My headspace wasn't into spelling words or teaching them how to solve math problems on paper, the kids had no intention to sit still and learn from a text book, what better of a day to go out in nature and learn from it. Sharon Gorge Nature Park, we weren't sure what to expect with it as gorges where we were from are huge cavities and crevices in the ground that open up with rock walls towering either side of you, waterfalls up to 100m high, cascading waters, remote walk tracks, aboriginal art and culture visibly seen. Although Sharon gorge was definitely not what we're used to in terms of a gorge, she was stunning and beautiful even so. The short 900m walk weaved through subtropical rainforest and bushland. Several boardwalks made it easy walking and fun for the kids to run along.

Forest of palms; such a shame the weeds are taking over the undergrowth in this area. Still such a great learning space for the kids, learning about the impact weeds can have on the native species.

Peeking out through the forest, the Burnett River glistening in the sun.

Identifying plants and seeds. How many different coloured seeds can we find.

The hanging vines make great props for pretend play, monkeys, pirates, firemen, superheroes, a 900m walk takes a long time when all these and more are involved.

When I worked as an outdoor instructor/teacher for school camps, school teachers would often tell me who their "problem" children were before I began the activities. I quickly learned that these so called "problem" children were far from being problematic. These kids just had more days where sitting still at a desk trying to learn was difficult for them, however, once these kids were in a real life situation, with critical thinking and practical hands-on skills, they were totally different to what those teachers normally experienced them as. Just like my own kids, sometimes they will sit still and learn, other times they need to learn by running, jumping, playing experiencing life outside the box. It's not hard to fulfil a child's imagination needs, if your kids go to school, help them get at least 2 hours per day of outdoor play and physical activity.

Why is the water orange? Not even I was sure about this question, the only thing I could think of was that after the recent floods the waters subsided and the remaining water hadn't settled yet, but who knows! It didn't look overly healthy.

It's not just a stick! It's a hunting spear that can turn into a magic wand or a fishing rod, it's a gear stick of a car, the handle bars of a motorbike, it's not just a stick!
