Swimming with Manatees in open sea - Belize.

When I look back to my trip to Belize one of the things I remember as if it were yesterday is the encounter I had with Manatees. That morning I went out for snorkeling with a small boat with just two other people on it. We stayed on the island of Caye Caulker a few days. Which is next to being an awesome place also very close to the Belize barrier riff.

That morning we were to explore the riff. After just being 10 minutes on our guide stopped the boat as he believed he had seen manatees nearby. And indeed al of the sudden we say two hairy noses poke out of the water and disappear again. The guide told us it was safe to enter the water but not to come too close to the big animals.

At first it was a bit strange or scary to swim towards them but soon it was just amazement. The animals didn't bother at all and were just being nothing but cuteness to witness. I just kept myself floating and tried not to move too much. It was like having a front row seat to natures purest moments.

I hadn't noticed but now more people showed up as other small boats had seen us there. The manatees took of and were soon out of sight. I was happy I had my gopro with me to share some footage of what I just had experienced.

You have to Belize it to believe it!

Next up some more about my trip to Belize and more traveling information about getting there and places to stay.

Cheers,
Thijs
