The road to get there goes through a cloud forest, has many curves, ups and downs, and the trip takes about an hour and a half. If you go by public transportation, some colorful old buses, surely the driver will have the music, salsa or merengue, at full volume while you hold on to the seat so as not to fall on the curves.
La carretera para llegar atraviesa un bosque nublado, tiene muchas curvas, subidas y bajadas, y el viaje dura como hora y media. Si vas en transporte público, unos viejos y coloridos autobuses, seguramente el chofer tendrá la música, salsa o merengue, a todo volumen mientras tú te agarras al asiento para no caerte en las curvas.
Getting to this exotic coast is a separate chapter, but it is because of these details that no one forgets the route to the beaches of Aragua State, Venezuela, and of course, then there is the landscape, which could be the exact definition of tropical paradise.

I had several years without visiting Cata Bay, and I told a friend to go, as she didn't know it she was immediately enthusiastic and we planned the trip to Ocumare de la Costa de Oro, that's the name of the place where the beach is located. Last Friday we met at the bus terminal in Maracay and from there we took a cab to go more comfortably, it is not much difference in price, the bus fare is $4 and in cab we paid $6.25 per person (it takes 4 passengers).
Tenía varios años sin visitar la Bahía de Cata, y le dije a una amiga que fuéramos, como ella no la conocía se entusiasmó de inmediato y planeamos el viaje a Ocumare de la Costa de Oro, así se llama el lugar donde está la playa. El viernes pasado nos encontramos en el terminal de Maracay y allí tomamos un taxi por puesto para ir más cómodas, no es mucha la diferencia de precio, en autobús el pasaje cuesta $4 y en taxi pagamos $6,25 por persona (lleva 4 pasajeros).
We arrived in town at about 11:00 in the morning and walked down the main street to look for an inn, this part is called El Playón. I remembered several where I had stayed before and wanted to go to the one I liked the most, fortunately it was working and had free rooms at a good price ($20), so we stayed the two nights there.
Llegamos al pueblo como a las 11:00 de la mañana y caminamos por la calle principal para buscar una posada, esta parte se llama El Playón. Yo recordaba varias donde me había quedado otras veces y quería ir a la que me había gustado más, afortunadamente estaba funcionando y tenía habitaciones libres a buen precio ($20), así que nos quedamos las dos noches allí.
We quickly put on our bathing suits and beach attire and went out to look for transportation to Cata Bay, which is about 7 km from there. We were told that the buses to there were not very frequent and the best option was cabs where you pay per person ($1), so we took one and in less than 10 minutes we arrived.
Nos pusimos los trajes de baño y el atuendo playero rápidamente y salimos a buscar transporte a la Bahía de Cata, que está a unos 7 Km de allí. Nos dijeron que los autobuses para allá no eran muy frecuentes y la mejor opción eran los taxis en los que pagas por persona ($1), así que tomamos uno y en menos de 10 minutos llegamos.
The weather was perfect and since it was Friday there were not many people on the beach, so we could enjoy the place without crowds.
El clima estaba perfecto y como era viernes no había mucha gente en la playa, así que pudimos disfrutar del lugar sin aglomeraciones.
Surrounded by mountains, this horseshoe-shaped beach is quite extensive, at one end there is a pier, in this area is where the waters are calmer. As you move towards the other end, you will see many more waves and at the end is the mouth of the river. In Cata there are all kinds of services, rental of awnings, food and beverage stands, sale of clothing and beach accessories, showers, bathrooms, etc.
Rodeada de montañas, esta playa con forma de herradura es bastante extensa, en un extremo hay un embarcadero, en esta zona es donde más tranquilas son las aguas. Al ir avanzando hacia el otro extremo, se ven muchas más olas y al final está la desembocadura del río. En Cata hay todo tipo de servicios, alquiler de toldos, puestos de comidas y bebidas, venta de ropa y accesorios playeros, duchas, baños, etc.
There are also lodging options, both in the town of Cata, nearby, and on the beach, in the famous towers behind it, but it is more expensive than staying in El Playón.
También hay opciones de alojamiento, tanto en el pueblo de Cata, cerca de allí, como en la playa, en las famosas torres que están detrás, pero sale más caro que quedarse en El Playón.
According to what I read, these towers were built in the 70's, but I didn't get any official information, only comments that say that there was a hacienda here and then that family sold the land to a construction company that built them. It always seemed to me that they are out of place there, they break the natural beauty of the landscape, but what can you do, they have become part of it, and there is no doubt that these apartments must have a spectacular view.
Según lo que leí, estas torres fueron levantadas en los años 70, pero no conseguí información oficial, sólo comentarios que dicen que aquí había una hacienda y luego esa familia le vendió los terrenos a una constructora que las hizo. Siempre me pareció que desentonan ahí, rompen la belleza natural del paisaje, pero qué se le va a hacer, se han convertido en parte de él, y no cabe duda que estos apartamentos deben tener una vista espectacular.
We walked away from these buildings, towards the part of the beach that is closer to the river and has no food stalls or other constructions behind. As there are many coconut trees and sea grapes (Coccoloba uvifera), you find free shade, without having to rent an awning.
Nosotras caminamos lejos de estos edificios, hacia la parte de la playa que está más cerca del río y no tiene puestos de comida ni otras construcciones atrás. Como hay muchos cocoteros y uveros de playa (Coccoloba uvifera), encuentras sombra gratis, sin tener que alquilar un toldo.
We got under a sea grape, on the white sand, left our things there and in we went! The water temperature was ideal, kind of warm, and although there were waves, we bathed again and again. A few passing clouds hid the sun for a while, but its warmth was felt anyway.
Nos ubicamos bajo un uvero, sobre la blanca arena, dejamos nuestras cosas allí y ¡adentro! La temperatura del agua estaba ideal, como tibia, y aunque había oleaje, nos bañamos una y otra vez. Unas nubes pasajeras ocultaron el sol un rato, pero su calor se sentía de todos modos.
Then we went to the end of the beach, where the river is, there were a few people bathing there.
Después nos fuimos hasta el final de la playa, donde está el río, había unas cuantas personas bañándose allí.
We also went in a bit, but the water was cold and we preferred to go back to the sea 😃.
También nos metimos un poco, pero el agua estaba fría y preferimos volver al mar 😃.
In this final part of the beach there are many pebbles scattered on the sand and shore, so it's a bit cumbersome to get in here because you walk barefoot, but we moved a few meters and that's it, back to the turquoise waters 😊.
En esta parte final de la playa hay muchas piedritas desperdigadas por la arena y la orilla, así que se hace algo engorroso meterse aquí porque una anda descalza, pero nos movimos unos metros y listo, de vuelta a las aguas turquesas 😊.
At about 5:00 in the afternoon, when the sun was slowly starting to go, we decided to do the same, other people were also leaving.
Como a las 5:00 de la tarde, cuando el sol comenzaba a irse poco a poco, decidimos hacer lo mismo, otras personas también se estaban marchando.
When we arrived at the entrance to the beach, where the cabs stop, there was one waiting for two more passengers, so we left quickly, but not before photographing this beautiful horse.
Cuando llegamos a la entrada de la playa, donde se paran los taxis, había uno esperando dos pasajeros más, así que nos fuimos rápido, no sin antes fotografiar a este hermoso caballo.
Cata is one of the most visited beaches in Aragua, and rightly so, don't you think? The next day we went back to go further, to Catica, but I will show you that in the next post 😉.
