Introduction
In the second part of my report from the visit to the Leipzig Zoo we see a selection of large animals in various subject areas. The Zoo's homepage even offers a 3D tour through the entire park. All animals in the zoo are listed thematically here. The Zoo history is also described in detail with many pictures. So let's go and discover the worlds of this unique zoo!
Einleitung
Im zweiten Teil meines Berichtes vom Besuch im Zoo Leipzig sehen wir eine Auswahl der großen Tiere in den verschiedenen Themenbereichen. Die Homepage des Zoos bietet sogar eine 3d-Tour durch den ganzen Park. Alle Tiere des Zoos sind thematisch hier gegliedert aufgelistet. Die Zoo Geschichte ist mit vielen Bildern ebenfalls ausführlich beschrieben. Also lass uns losgehen und die Welten dieses einmaligen Zoos entdecken!
Elefantentempel
A large complex with several viewpoints, including one under water, gives the Indian elephants a temple-like atmosphere. In addition to the sand and bathing pool, there is even an elephant washing facility with daily action, unfortunately I missed this. A wooden elephant greets us at the entrance to the facility.
Eine große Anlage mit mehreren Aussichtspunkten, darunter sogar eine unter Wasser, bietet den Indischen Elefanten eine tempelhafte Atmosphäre. Neben dem Sand- und Badebecken gibt es sogar eine Elefantenwaschanlage mit täglicher Aktion, leider habe ich dies verpasst. Am Eingang zur Anlage begrüßt uns ein Holzelefant.
Pongoland
The great ape enclosure can hardly be described in words. The extended family of the western lowland gorilla lives on an island whose river boundary marks our path. The old one devotes himself to playing with insects in the grass. The little ones play cockily under the supervision of their mother. They romp around in the grass and are actually like little children. For me it is one of the particularly successful moments and I enjoy forgetting the time and being able to watch the game.
Die Menschenaffenanlage ist mit Worten kaum zu beschreiben. Die Großfamilie des Westlichen Tieflandgorillas lebt auf einer Insel deren Flußbegrenzung unseren Weg markiert. Der Alte widmet sich dem Spiel mit Insekten im Gras. Die Jungen spielen übermütig unter Aufsicht der Mutter. Sie tollen sich im Gras und sind eigentlich wie kleine Kinder. Für mich ist es einer der besonders gelungenen Momente und ich geniese es die Zeit zu vergessen und dem Spiel zusehen zu können.
Lion savanna / Löwensavanne
Passing the rock canyons of the bears we get to the next large facility. A group of African lions can be seen in the distance. The heat of the day lets them rest in the shade of tall trees and rocks. This snapshot is the only picture I can take. All other big cats are hidden in their burrows and not visible.
Vorbei an den Felsenschluchten der Bären gelangen wir zur nächsten großen Anlage. Eine Gruppe Afrikanischer Löwen ist in der Ferne auszumachen. Die Hitze des Tages lässt sie im Schatten großer Bäume und Felsen ruhen. Dieser Schnappschuß ist das einzige Bild das ich machen kann. Alle anderen Raubkatzen sind versteckt in ihren Höhlen und nicht sichtbar.
Kiwara-Kopje
Almost at the end of my strength, I realize that I have arrived at the other end of the zoo and start to make my way to the exit. But this zoo doesn't let you out that easily. Now I see another huge enclosure in front of me. A replica of the African savannah with baringo giraffes ...
Schon fast am Ende meiner Kräfte stelle ich fest dass ich nun am anderen Ende des Zoos angekommen bin und mache mich auf den Weg zum Ausgang. Doch so leicht lässt einen dieser Zoo nicht heraus. Jetzt erblicke ich ein weiteres riesiges Gehege vor mir. Ein Nachbau der Afrikanischen Savanne mit Baringo Giraffen ...

... and an eastern black rhinoceros share this space with several other species. In the middle of this facility is a restaurant with viewing platforms. Safari in Germany without air travel and annoying mosquitoes.
... und ein östliches schwarzes Nashorn teilen sich mit einigen anderen Arten diesen Raum. Mittig dieser Anlage ist ein Restaurant mit Aussichtsplattformen. Safari in Deutschland ohne Flugreise und lästigen Moskitos.
The smallest mongoose in Africa is the common dwarf mongoose, which is particularly stylishly positioned on a rock for a photo session. Then we leave Africa and cross to South America and there to Patagonia.
Der kleinste Mungo Afrikas ist der Gemeine Zwergmungo der sich hier zum Fototermin besonders schick auf einem Felsen positioniert. Dann verlassen wir Afrika und setzen über nach Südamerika und dort nach Patagonien.

This animal looks like a rabbit, but it belongs to the guinea pig family. I saw the up to 80 cm long Patagonian mara here for the first time and could not assign them at all.
Dieses Tier sieht aus wie ein Hase, ist aber aus der Familie der Meerschweinchen. Die bis zu 80 cm langen großen Pampashasen habe ich hier zum ersten Mal gesehen und konnte sie überhaupt nicht zuordnen.
The capybara is the largest living rodent, like the Patagonian mara it is from the guinea pig family. For us Europeans the two most extraordinary animals so far.
Das Capybara oder Wasserschwein ist das größte lebende Nagetier, wie der Pampashase ist es aus der Familie der Meerschweinchen. Für uns Europäer sicherlich die beiden außergewöhnlichsten Tiere bisher.
The guanaco, the wild form of the lama, forms the end of my report. In a shady location, they like to roll around in the sand and don't let themselves be disturbed. For me, this ends my visit to the zoo and I hope I was able to offer you a few pleasant minutes. It was definitely not the last visit here!
Den Abschluß meines Berichtes bildet das Guanaco, die wilde Form des Lamas. In schattiger Lage wälzen sie sich gerne im Sand und lassen sich nicht aus der Ruhe bringen. Für mich endet hiermit der Besuch im Zoo und ich hoffe ich konnte euch ein paar angenehme Minuten bieten. Es war definitiv nicht der letzte Besuch hier!
