Alguna vez quisiste visitar un lugar que no sólo ruinas arqueológicas, sino tambien hermosos paisajes? Es una combinación algo difícil de conseguir, pero en Siracusa puedes lograr ver ambas!

Syracuse is one of the provinces that are part of Sicily, Italy. It's one of the most important cities in the island, as it contains very well-kept remainins of the Greek and Roman Empires, a fact that makes this place unique and one-of-a-kind if you're a history lover... But don't be fooled, Syracuse is also a beautiful city with breathtaking landscapes. It's worth it spending there a couple of days, even when it's not the most popular destination among tourists.

Siracusa es una de las provincias que forman parte de Sicilia, Italia. Es una de las ciudades más importantes de la isla, ya que contiene restos muy bien cuidados de los imperios griego y romano, hecho que hace que este lugar sea único e irrepetible si eres un amante de la historia. Pero no se deje engañar, Syracuse también es una ciudad hermosa con paisajes impresionantes. Vale la pena pasar allí un par de días, incluso cuando no es el destino más popular entre los turistas.

Travelling to Syracuse

Truth is my trip to Syracuse was kinda... spontaneous and not at all planned. I had arrived to Catania, one of Sicily's biggest cities a couple of days ago, and all I wanted to do was to hike in the Mount Etna. Yeah, Mount Etna, the active volcano that erupted not long ago. Pretty dangerous, yet so interesting to actually walk to over 3.300masl. I was up for the challenge.

That day I woke up incredibly early to catch the bus that would leave me at the beginning of the path that lead to the volcano... it was supposed to leave by 8.15am sharp, truth is I arrived there by 8am and the bus was already gone. I tried getting there by other means, like on an excursion or even renting a car with some other guys from Rumania... but everything turned out to be impossible and there was no hiking for me to do. Meh.

Well, no Mount Etna that day, what to do then?! Let's take a one hour train to Syracuse, something that, although was on my list, I didn't expect at all to visit... and I'm glad I did!

La verdad es que mi viaje a Syracuse fue un poco... espontáneo y nada planeado. Había llegado a Catania, una de las ciudades más grandes de Sicilia, hace un par de días, y todo lo que quería hacer era caminar por el Monte Etna. Sí, el Monte Etna, el volcán activo que entró en erupción no hace mucho. Bastante peligroso, pero tan interesante para caminar a más de 3.300 msnm. Estaba listo para el desafío.

Ese día me desperté increíblemente temprano para tomar el bus que me dejaría al inicio del camino que lleva al volcán... se suponía que saldría a las 8:15 en punto, la verdad llegué a las 8:00 am y el bus estaba ya se ha ido Intenté llegar por otros medios, como en una excursión o incluso alquilando un coche con otros chicos de Rumania... pero todo resultó ser imposible y no había caminatas para mí. Meh.

Bueno, no hay Monte Etna ese día, ¿qué hacer entonces? Tomemos un tren de una hora a Syracuse, algo que, aunque estaba en mi lista, no esperaba para nada visitar... ¡y me alegro de haberlo hecho!

Hidden gems: Archaeological treasures

Syracuse is best known for it's well-kept remainings of the Greek and Roman Empire, treasures that have been part of that land for almost 2700 years. Amphiteatres, architecture and even what was thought to be Archimedes tomb can be found there; a rich place for a cultural visit and to spend a day among history itself.

In the centre of the city, you can find the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, which is one of the world's most important archaeological pieces that can be seen. Excavation and preservation of the found pieces started in the middle of 20th century and allows tourists to visit and learn in a very fun and interesting way, while getting to know a lot more about local history.

Syracuse es mejor conocida por sus restos bien conservados del Imperio griego y romano, tesoros que han sido parte de esa tierra durante casi 2700 años. Allí se pueden encontrar anfiteatros, arquitectura e incluso lo que se pensaba que era la tumba de Arquímedes; un lugar rico para una visita cultural y para pasar un día entre la historia misma.

En el centro de la ciudad se encuentra el Parque Arqueológico de Neapolis, que es una de las piezas arqueológicas más importantes del mundo que se pueden ver. La excavación y preservación de las piezas encontradas comenzó a mediados del siglo XX y permite a los turistas visitar y aprender de una manera muy divertida e interesante, mientras conocen mucho más sobre la historia local.

Archaeological Park of Neapolis

Undoubtedly, one of the biggest attractions that this archaeological park has to offer is the Greek amphiteatre. It is very well preserved since it has been studied from 1800 and on, but it still amazes all sorts of visitors throughout the time. It might seem simple, but all its structure was carved into rocks and used to be a place in which all sorts of cultural activities would take place.

Sin duda, uno de los mayores atractivos que ofrece este parque arqueológico es el anfiteatro griego. Está muy bien conservado ya que ha sido estudiado desde 1800 en adelante, pero aún asombra a todo tipo de visitantes a lo largo del tiempo. Puede parecer sencillo, pero toda su estructura fue excavada en la roca y solía ser un lugar en el que se desarrollaban todo tipo de actividades culturales.

To be honest, that structure was huge, but I didn't like the idea that they were building like a "brand-new" amphiteatre above the original. I believe remainings should stay like they are: remainings. You can see in the picture that the arena was under construction and that several tiers had wood on top of them.

Still, it was amazing to take a stroll among the huge rocks and antique constructions. To be able to see what we get to learn on books at a young age was really impressive for me, to be honest.

Para ser honesto, esa estructura era enorme, pero no me gustaba la idea de que estuvieran construyendo como un anfiteatro "nuevo" sobre el original. Creo que los restos deben quedarse como son: restos. En la imagen se puede ver que la arena estaba en construcción y que varios niveles tenían madera encima.

Aún así, fue increíble dar un paseo entre las enormes rocas y construcciones antiguas. Ser capaz de ver lo que aprendemos en los libros a una edad temprana fue realmente impresionante para mí, para ser honesto.

Another spot I enjoyed a lot was the Ear of Dyonisus. Whenever you see it from the outside, it just looks as a carving in the rock, with no particular feature at all. Truth is, when you get inside, it's acustic is simply amazing, sounds are like a brand new experience due to the shape of the rocks.

This was an artificial cave with over 20m high, so it's already impressive to be standing there next to such giant structure. It is said that sounds are amplified up to 16 times, according to what the tour guide said, and according to the legend, the tyrant Dyonisus built the cave in order to lock prisoners and be able to hear them shout and suffer. Creepy legend, right?!

Otro lugar que disfruté mucho fue la Oreja de Dionisio. Siempre que lo ves desde el exterior, solo parece una talla en la roca, sin ninguna característica particular. La verdad es que cuando entras, su acústica es simplemente increíble, los sonidos son como una experiencia completamente nueva debido a la forma de las rocas.

Esta era una cueva artificial con más de 20 m de altura, por lo que ya es impresionante estar de pie junto a una estructura tan gigante. Se dice que los sonidos se amplifican hasta 16 veces, según dijo el guía turístico, y según la leyenda, el tirano Dionisio construyó la cueva para encerrar a los prisioneros y poder escucharlos gritar y sufrir. Leyenda espeluznante, ¿verdad?

The rest of the park were other buildings made out of rocks. There were a lot of fountain-like spots that were really nice to watch too. Mostly, all of them are called after the name grotta.

El resto del parque eran otros edificios hechos de rocas. Había muchos lugares con forma de fuente que también eran muy agradables de ver. En su mayoría, todos ellos reciben el nombre de grotta.

Right before ending our visit, we had the chance to see the Roman Theatre. It was even bigger than the Greek Amphiteatre and the remainins were barely modified, which was better for me! In the picture, we can see the arena perfectly preserved, the different tiers and all seats made out of rock.

Justo antes de finalizar nuestra visita, tuvimos la oportunidad de ver el Teatro Romano. Era incluso más grande que el anfiteatro griego y los restos apenas se modificaron, ¡lo cual fue mejor para mí! En la imagen podemos ver la arena perfectamente conservada, las diferentes gradas y todos los asientos hechos de roca.

Isola di Ortigia

Once the visit to the archaeological park was over, all that I wanted to do was to visit Syracuse itself. Enough history for a day, now it was time to enjoy what that city had to offer... which was incredibly amazing.

Una vez terminada la visita al parque arqueológico, lo único que quería hacer era visitar la propia Siracusa. Suficiente historia por un día, ahora era el momento de disfrutar lo que esa ciudad tenía para ofrecer... lo cual fue increíblemente asombroso.

Even though Sicily is an island, Isola di Ortigia is another island that's right next to Syracuse, you can easily get there walking and enjoy the views as well! Clouds has faded away, so it was a lot nicer and warmer to take a walk there.

Aunque Sicilia es una isla, Isola di Ortigia es otra isla que está justo al lado de Siracusa, ¡puedes llegar fácilmente caminando y disfrutar de las vistas también! Las nubes se han desvanecido, por lo que fue mucho más agradable y cálido dar un paseo hasta allí.

This place was a lot more crowded and visited than the park itself, as in the rest of Italy, there were very beautiful fountains everywhere. Here, you can see Diana Fountain, which is placed in the Piazza Duomo and it's a representation of Diana godess, surrounded by four horses.

Este lugar estaba mucho más concurrido y visitado que el propio parque, como en el resto de Italia, había fuentes muy bonitas por todas partes. Aquí puedes ver la Fuente de Diana, que se encuentra en la Piazza Duomo y es una representación de la diosa Diana, rodeada por cuatro caballos.

Just a couple of meters away from Diana Fountain, you will see the Cathedral of Syracuse. It's incredibly breathtaking and beautiful, not only on the outside but also inside. It's full name is Cattedrale della Natività di Maria Santissima... but locals also refer to it as Cathedral of Syracuse, lol.

I'm not the most religious person, but I don't feel that comfortable taking pictures inside a church or cathedral, I believe it's somehow disrespectful for all those that were praying or even relaxing there, so I didn't feel like taking picture when I was inside.

A solo un par de metros de la Fuente de Diana, verá la Catedral de Siracusa. Es increíblemente impresionante y hermoso, no solo por fuera sino también por dentro. Su nombre completo es Cattedrale della Natività di Maria Santissima... pero los lugareños también se refieren a ella como Catedral de Siracusa, jajaja.

No soy la persona más religiosa, pero no me siento cómodo tomando fotos dentro de una iglesia o catedral, creo que de alguna manera es una falta de respeto para todos los que estaban rezando o incluso descansando allí, así que no tenía ganas de tomar fotos. cuando estaba dentro.

Besides beautiful buildings, you can also get breathtaking views from the island. I personally loved them and enjoyed watching the sea for quite some time.

Además de hermosos edificios, también puede obtener impresionantes vistas de la isla. A mí personalmente me encantaron y disfruté viendo el mar durante bastante tiempo.

The wind, humidity on the air, the sea breeze... everything was great. Isola di Ortigia's shore is simply great and it's no wonder why so many people choose to go there on summer time.

El viento, la humedad del aire, la brisa del mar... todo fue genial. La costa de Isola di Ortigia es simplemente genial y no es de extrañar por qué tanta gente elige ir allí en verano.

After so much time walking, it was already time for me to take the bus. I had an hour travel back to Catania... But not before having some coffee and Sicilian Raviola! Italian cuisine will probably be my favourite food for the rest of my life...
