Two of the most beautiful valleys in the Extremadura region in the northwest of the country are the Jerte Valley and the La Vera Valley, the latter bordering the province north of Cáceres, Salamanca, which was my destination today, specifically the small mountain town called Villanueva de la Vera and its many waterfalls and cascades, which form its rivers. In this area there is a large park that has natural pools, a thick forest with native species and you can see with the naked eye the beginning of the Sierra de Gredos marking the border with other provinces. The arrival to Villanueva de la Vera is by small, very winding country roads, perfect for those who like to drive due to its constant curves in which you have to be careful and its beautiful landscape. I passed through several small villages in this area of northern Cáceres until I reached Villanueva, where a sign at the entrance to the town invited me and welcomed me. I set out to explore the town and began my journey along the old cobbled streets that led me to the centre of the village.

Dos de los más hermosos valles de la región de Extremadura al noroeste del país son el valle del Jerte y el valle de La Vera, este segundo limítrofe con la provincia al norte de Cáceres, Salamanca, que era mi destino de hoy, concretamente al pequeño pueblo de montaña llamado Villanueva de la Vera y a sus múltiples cascadas y saltos de agua, que forman sus ríos. En esta zona se encuentra un amplio parque que cuenta con piscinas naturales, un espeso bosque con especies autóctonas y se puede observar a simple vista el principio de la Sierra de Gredos marcando frontera con otras provincias. La llegada a Villanueva de la Vera es por pequeñas carreteras comarcales muy sinuosas, perfectas para quien le guste conducir por sus constantes curvas en las que hay que esmerarse y su bonito paisaje. Atravesé varios pequeños pueblos de esta zona del norte de Cáceres hasta llegar a Villanueva y un cartel en la entrada del pueblo me invitaba y me daba la bienvenida. Me dispuse a conocer la localidad y comencé mi recorrido por las calles empedradas y antiguas que me llevaban al centro de la villa.

Walking around I see many details of the typical architecture of this area, the most common materials being those of the same region, stone and wood. Being a low mountain area, the climate has been a very important factor in the shapes of these buildings, their roofs and terraces that have to withstand the elements of winter, snow and rain, and also absorb the heat and light of this coldest and wettest period of the year. Along its streets you can still see how the channeled water flows with a small groove through the middle of the paving seeking that fall towards fountains or exit towards the river itself. The type of construction is very similar to that of the towns further north in the country but they retain that personal touch of the towns of Extremadura that differentiates them and gives them that exclusive appearance of this area in the valley of La Vera.

Paseando observo muchos detalles de la arquitectura típica de esta zona siendo los materiales más comunes los de la misma región, piedra y madera. Al ser una zona de baja montaña el clima ha sido un factor muy importante en las formas de estas edificaciones, sus tejados y terrazas que tiene que soportar la intemperie del invierno, nieve y lluvia, y también absorber el calor y la luz de este periodo más frio y húmedo del año. Por sus calles aun se puede ver como el agua de caída canalizada fluye con un pequeño surco por el medio del empedrado buscando esa caída hacia fuentes o salida hacia el propio rio. El tipo de construcción se parece mucho a la de los pueblos más al norte del país pero conservan ese toque personal de los pueblos de Extremadura que los diferencia y les da ese aspecto tan exclusivo de esta zona en el valle de La Vera.

Becoming more and more tangled and more and more in the center, the streets began to be more colorful and the plants and flowers appeared to give that vegetal touch between the wood and the colors of the stone. The houses decorated with pots and very well-kept plants left that note of contrast and completed the rustic beauty of the town. I asked some people in this area and they told me about a park on the outskirts of the town where I could enjoy some great mountain views and also a walk through the forest and the river's waterfalls to walk. At that moment I was between going directly to this area that they had told me about or continuing my walk through the town and waiting for sunset, eating something, and then going to the pools area. I made the decision to continue and try the typical dishes and stopped to eat something in a restaurant that looked very picturesque where meats and roasts and some excellent vegetables on the side were a delight. The desserts and sweets of the area are also delicious and I couldn't leave them out of this post.

Cada vez más enredado y más metido en el centro las calles empezaban a ser mas coloridas y las plantas y flores aparecían para darle ese toque vegetal entre la madera y los colores de la piedra. Las casas adornadas con los tiestos y plantas muy bien cuidadas dejaban esa nota de contraste y completaban la belleza rustica de la localidad. Pregunte a unas personas en esta zona y me hablaron de un parque a las afueras del pueblo donde podría disfrutar de unas vistas a la montaña geniales y también un paseo por el bosque y las preparas cascadas del rio para caminar. En ese momento me encontraba entre dirigirme directamente a esta zona de la que me habían hablado o seguir mi caminata por el pueblo y esperarme al atardecer, comer algo, y después ir a la zona de las pozas. Tome la decisión de seguir y probar los platos típicos y pare a comer algo en un restaurante que se presentaba muy pintoresco donde carnes y asados y unas excelentes verduras de acompañamiento hicieron las delicias. Los postres y dulces de la zona también son deliciosos y no podía dejarlos en el olvido en esta publicación.

At dusk I approached the park area to climb to the highest point and have a better overview of the area I was going to visit. I approached the edge of the Tietar River and began to go down its right bank where there was a path prepared to walk to the pool already in the middle of the Devil's Waterfall. Someone explained to me that the river that runs through this gorge, although it is not very large, always has water all year round since it comes from different sources. The springs, the melting of the mountain snow and small tributaries feed this Tietar River with liquid. The successive waterfalls that I see in a staircase take me down and calm the water in a pool of crystal-clear water that, together with the natural beauty of the landscape, leaves me speechless, just hearing the murmur of the water in that constant and wonderful song that Mother Nature plays.

Ya por el atardecer me acerque a la zona del parque para encaramarme al punto más alto y tener una mejor visión global de la zona que iba a conocer. Me acerque al margen del rio Tietar y empecé a bajar por su orilla derecha donde había un sendero preparado para caminar hasta la poza ya metido en plena Cascada del Diablo. Una persona me explico que el río que atraviesa esta garganta aunque no es muy grande siempre tiene agua todo el año ya que proviene de diferentes fuentes. Los manantiales, el deshielo de la nieve de montaña y pequeños afluentes nutren de liquido a este rio Tietar. Las sucesivas cascadas que voy viendo en escalera me llevan hacia abajo y remansan el agua en una poza de agua cristalina que junto a la belleza natural del paisaje me deja sin palabras, solo oír el murmuro del agua en esa canción constante y maravillosa que interpreta la madre naturaleza.
