Good day community

Some villages in the mountains, valleys and pastures are my favourite destinations to visit. They become small challenges for me and give me a deeper understanding of a region, province or community in my country. I have set out a route to visit the villages in the mountains and pastures that are little known to mass tourism, but that are part of our history, that tell us a lot about our past, our customs, our art or gastronomy. Fregenal de la Sierra, located in the province of Badajoz, is a clear example of how a small town can tell a story and show us historical architectural remains. I headed to this particular area from the north of the community of Extremadura to its capital, Mérida. From there I followed the route south on the A66 to Zafra and then branched off onto a road in the community, the EX 101, until I reached my destination, which was actually two. The first of them was to get to know Fregenal, its mountain range and some of its surroundings and the second was to go and see an astrological observation camp a short distance from there.

Algunos pueblos de las sierras, valles y dehesas son de mis objetivos favoritos para visitarlos, se convierten para mí en pequeños retos y en un conocimiento más profundo de una región, provincia o comunidad de mi país. Me he marcado una ruta para conocer los pueblos de las sierras y dehesas que son pequeños desconocidos para el turismo de masas, pero que son parte de nuestra historia, que nos cuentan mucho de nuestro pasado, de nuestras costumbres, de nuestro arte o gastronomía. Fregenal de la Sierra ubicado en la provincia de Badajoz es un claro ejemplo de cómo un pequeño pueblo puede contar una historia y mostrarnos unos restos arquitectónico históricos. Me dirigí a esta zona en concreto desde el norte de la comunidad de Extremadura hasta su capital, Mérida. Desde allí seguí la ruta hacia el sur por la A66 hasta Zafra y luego bifurque a una carretera de la comunidad la EX 101 hasta llegar a mi objetivo que en realidad eran dos. El primero de ellos era conocer Fregenal, su sierra y algo de sus alrededores y el segundo era ir a ver un campamento de observación astrológica a poca distancia de allí.

Some beautiful villages in the mountains that border Portugal and Andalusia to the south showed me all the examples of their architecture, their white houses and streets and their characteristic urban center with that small central square, town hall and area where the population meets for different events. When I was walking around seeing this group of church, Templar fortress, bullring, I noticed some arcades that seemed to me to be a picturesque cafeteria with breakfast and I stopped there to rest and have a coffee. From that terrace I could see the whole area I was going to visit and I also took the opportunity to talk to the local people about the history of the Templars of this fortification. I also asked about the bullring attached and within the Templar enclosure, between the walls. An old man from the place explained to me that in the remote past there was a fight between the Council of Seville with privileges from the king and the Templars to whom he donated the castle years before when they built it. The truth is that I concluded that it was a dispute over territory between the two sides. This story informed me and put me in the situation regarding the visit to the Castle by the Order of the Temple.

Unos hermosos pueblos de las serranías que son frontera con Portugal y con Andalucía al sur me enseñaban todas las muestras en su arquitectura, sus casas y calles blancas y su centro urbano característico con esa pequeña plaza central, ayuntamiento y zona donde la población se reúne por diferentes eventos. Cuando estaba caminando viendo este conjunto de iglesia, fortaleza templaría, plaza de toros reparé unos soportales lo que me pareció una pintoresca cafetería con desayunos y me detuve allí a descansar y tomar un café. Desde esa terraza podía observar toda la zona que iba a visitar y también aproveche para hablar con las gentes del lugar sobre la historia de los templarios de esta fortificación. Pregunte también por la plaza de toros anexa y dentro del recinto templario, entre las murallas. Un anciano del lugar me explico que tuvieron en un remoto pasado hubo una riña entre el Concejo de Sevilla con privilegios del rey y los templarios a los cuales les dono el castillo años antes cuando lo construyeron. Lo cierto es que saque la conclusión que fue una riña por disputarse el territorio entre ambos bandos. Esta historia me informó y me puso en situación en cuanto a la visita al Castillo de la orden del Temple.

The construction of the bullring was initially due to a reconstruction of the interior of the walled enclosure, which was in very poor condition after conflicts and battles and the passage of time. I found it very curious that it was accessed directly from the fortress of the Order of the Temple, which is very well preserved. I was also surprised by how well maintained this bullring was and that it had recently been renovated by a workshop school. As an architectural complex, the bullring gives rise to great images and one can imagine how many people came to it and socialised at the bullfighting events in the town over the years.

La construcción de la plaza de toros inicialmente fue por una reconstrucción del interior del reciento amurallado que se encontraba en muy malas condiciones después de conflictos y batallas y por el paso de los siglos. Me resultaba muy curioso que se accediera directamente desde la fortaleza de la Orden del Temple que se encuentra muy bien conservada. Igualmente me sorprendió lo bien cuidada que estaba esta plaza de toros y que había sido reformada recientemente por una escuela taller. Como conjunto arquitectónico la plaza da pie a grandes imágenes y uno se puede imaginar en ella y en como a lo largo de los años muchas personas acudían y socializaban en los festejos taurinos de la villa.

The day continued up to the Templar tower, which can be accessed from the wall surrounding the square by a winding staircase that led me to the top of the tower. From there I could see some incredible views of the town below me and also the fields and pastures of holm oaks and cork oaks in the mountains of these towns. I could also see the road that would take me to my next objective and second reason for this trip, the astrological observation park of “Entre Encinas” a short distance from Fregenal de la Sierra.

La jornada continuó subido a la torre templario, puede acceder a ella desde la muralla que rodea la plaza por unas sinuosas escaleras que me condujeron a la parte alta de la torre. Desde allí pude observar unas vistas del pueblo increíble que quedaban a mis pies y también los campos y dehesas de encinas y alcornoques de la sierra de estas localidades. Podía ver también la carretera que me llevaría a mi siguiente objetivo y segundo motivo de este viaje, el parque de observación astrológica de “Entre Encinas” a muy poca distancia de Fregenal de la Sierra.

I arrived by a winding country road to the area where the “Entre Encinas” star interpretation centre was located. The site surprised me as evening fell and some groups of people listened to the explanations that some astronomers were giving about the skies, the constellations, the stars and the Milky Way, our galaxy. I joined one of these groups and was able to hear these stories about the wonders of the universe, such as how the light of the stars is produced millions of years before we see it, or black holes, or the formation of new stars. The technology they had was spectacular, many of these observation devices were controlled by remote control, the internet. The skies of this region are special for astronomical observation as they are very clean and there is no light pollution.

Llegue por una carretera comarcal llena de curvas a la zona donde estaba situado el centro de interpretación estelar de “Entre Encinas”. El sitio me sorprendió ya cayendo la tarde y algunos grupos de personas escuchaban las explicaciones que algunos astrónomos hacían sobre los cielos, las constelaciones, las estrellas y la Vía Láctea nuestra galaxia. Me uní a uno de esos grupos y pude oír esos relatos que maravillas del universo como que la luz de las estrellas se produce millones de años antes de que nosotros la veamos, o los agujeros negros, o la formación de nuevas estrellas. La tecnología que tenían era espectacular, muchos de esos aparatos de observación eran manejados por control remoto, internet. Los cielos de esta región son especiales para la observación astronómica ya que están muy limpios y la contaminación lumínica es nula

Finally, after having visited Fregenal de la Sierra and its Templar architectural complex and visiting this interpretation point and observatory, I have until nightfall to be able to capture some images of our Milky Way that I share today with all of you in this exciting project #worldmappin in which I participate.
