Continuing the previous article, after visiting one of the main landmarks of the city of Beja, the imposing Castle, we decided to take the opportunity to explore a little of the city, delving into its historic streets and trying to discover many of its treasures. Beja is a very old medieval city full of history and culture that invites visitors like us to get lost in its alleys and discover stories and influences ranging from Roman, Arabic and even Visigothic culture.

Dando continuidade ao artigo anterior, após a visita a um dos principais marcos da cidade de Beja, o imponente Castelo, decidimos aproveitar para explorar um pouco da cidade, mergulhando nas suas ruas históricas e tentando descobrir muitos dos seus tesouros. Beja é uma cidade medieval muito antiga e repleta de história e cultura que convida os visitantes como no nosso caso a perderem-se nas suas ruelas e a descobrir histórias e influências que vão desde a cultura romana, árabe e até visigóticas.
The area around the Castle is very close to the historic center and, as expected, is full of narrow streets, whitewashed houses with their windows decorated with colorful bars and exquisitely detailed decorations. The typical Alentejo architecture is present throughout, creating a welcoming and peaceful environment. Many of these houses bear coats of arms of noble families, remembering the historical importance of Beja over the centuries.

A zona circundante ao Castelo fica muito perto do centro histórico e como seria de esperar, está repleta de ruas estreitas, casas caiadas de branco com as suas janelas decoradas com barras coloridas e decorações detalhadas a rigor. A arquitetura típica do Alentejo está presente por toda a parte, criando um ambiente acolhedor e tranquilo. Muitas dessas casas ostentam brasões de famílias nobres, recordando a importância histórica de Beja ao longo dos séculos.
There, very close to the entrance to the Castle, we are presented with the possibility of visiting the Beja Cathedral in just a few steps, which left me impressed, not only by its history but also by its architecture. Originally built as a mosque during Moorish rule, it was converted into a church after the conquest of Beja by Afonso III, in 1244. Only in 1590, however, was it elevated to a cathedral by Pope Sixtus V.

Ali muito perto da entrada para o Castelo somos presenteados com a possibilidade de em poucos passos ser possível visitar a Sé de Beja, o que me deixou impressionada, não só pela sua história mas também pela sua arquitetura. Originalmente construída como uma mesquita durante o domínio mouro, foi convertida numa igreja após a conquista de Beja por Afonso III, em 1244. Só em 1590, no entanto, foi elevada a catedral pelo Papa Sisto V.
The mix of architectural styles is fascinating with its Gothic facade, with solid towers and Manueline details on the windows and portals that show the evolution over the centuries.
Unfortunately it was not possible to enter, but after some online research it was possible to observe the three naves with pointed arches and the Renaissance altarpiece dedicated to Santo Amaro that are inside, with truly impressive details.

A mistura de estilos arquitetônicos é fascinante com a sua fachada gótica, com torres sólidas e detalhes manuelinos nas janelas e portais que mostram a evolução ao longo dos séculos.
Infelizmente não foi possível entrar, mas após algumas pesquisas online foi possível observar as três naves com arcos ogivais e o retábulo renascentista dedicado a Santo Amaro que se encontram no seu interior, com detalhes verdadeiramente impressionantes.
Our next destination would have been the Regional Museum of Beja, located in the former Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also a prominent and chosen place for those who are there, but situations occurred that made it impossible for us to take the well-deserved photographic record to share with you. , which was a shame :(
This convent in question was founded in the 15th century and in addition to being considered an architectural masterpiece, today it is a museum that houses a vast collection of sacred art, painting and archeology, also an impressive collection of Roman mosaics that testify to past times and the living influence of many other cultures on the development of this region.

O nosso próximo destino teria sido o Museu Regional de Beja, localizado no antigo Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, também ele um local de destaque e eleição para quem ali se encontra, mas ocorreram situações que nos impossibilitaram de efetuar o merecido registo fotográfico para partilhar convosco, o que foi uma pena :(
Este convento em questão foi fundado no século XV e para além de ser considerado uma obra-prima arquitetônica, hoje é um museu que abriga entre uma vasta coleção de arte sacra, pintura e arqueologia, também uma coleção impressionante de mosaicos romanos que testemunham tempos passados e a influência viva de muitas outras culturas no desenvolvimento desta região.
Beja is a city where the past coexists with the present in a harmonious way, with traces of the past integrated into the urban fabric, where every corner reveals a piece of history, and where the calm and welcoming rhythm invites you to immerse yourself in the culture and heritage of the city. Alentejo.

Beja é uma cidade onde o passado coexiste com o presente de forma harmoniosa, com vestígios do passado integrados na malha urbana, onde cada esquina revela um pedaço de história, e onde o ritmo calmo e acolhedor convida a uma imersão na cultura e no património do Alentejo.
Despite everything that Beja has to offer and the potential inherent in the history that lies at its base, we left the city with a slightly strange feeling, knowing that, in addition to the grandeur of the castle, the infinity of treasures that tell stories of centuries past , and which continue to shape the present, the people were missing, the people of Beja, the people of our Alentejo who are slowly disappearing and with them take the stories that only they could tell, that only they carry, a heritage that little by little is being replaced, and history is not only made of stones, but also of memories, of those who lived them and who can share them.
It's still a beautiful and magical place, but in the end I was left with a bittersweet feeling..
I hope to go back there and next time have the opportunity to experience it all in another way.

Apesar de tudo o que Beja tem para oferecer e do potencial inerente à história que está na sua base, deixámos a cidade com uma sensação um pouco estranha, sabendo que, para além da grandiosidade do castelo, da infinidade de tesouros que contam histórias de séculos passados, e que continuam a moldar o presente, faltaram as gentes, as gentes de Beja, as gentes do nosso Alentejo que aos poucos vão desaparecendo e com elas levam as histórias que só elas poderiam contar, que só elas carregam, uma herança que aos poucos está a ser substituída, e não só de pedras se faz a história, mas também de memórias, daqueles que as viveram e que as podem partilhar.
Não deixa de ser um sítio belo e mágico, mas no final fiquei com um sentimento agridoce..
Espero lá voltar e da próxima vez ter a oportunidade de vivenciar tudo aquilo de outra forma.
