Away from the city

Hello, friends. A few days ago, I revisited The Sierpe, a municipality in the province of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. It had been about 8 years since I last visited this place, and what memories it brought back.

The Sierpe is one of the youngest municipalities in historical terms. It was founded out of the need to resettle people who were displaced by the construction of the Zaza dam, the largest reservoir in the country, which is located here. A somewhat peculiar story, since when the dam was first filled, it took up much more land than estimated. The magnitude was such that part of the main road, houses and even a condensed milk factory was under water.

When you arrive in The Sierpe, you realize that it is a totally agricultural municipality. Life here revolves around the land and its crops, mostly rice. But, other than that, it's a pretty simple place, actually, more than it should be. The ambiance of this place is countryside, as it has minimal infrastructure. A basketball court, a small movie theater called "The Villas", which is quite simple, as it is not even 3D, and a cultural center with a small plaza where they play music. I could not fail to mention those little parks scattered around town. Something like that may seem simple, but it is nice. This place is no stranger to Cuba, it is practically frozen in time, nothing new since its founding in the 70s.

What strikes me most about La Sierpe is its tranquility. You can feel how time seems to stop here. There is no rush, no stress, just the peace of the rural environment and the warmth of its people. The country people are very helpful and this is appreciated in this place.

Even though I was only there for a couple of hours, I enjoyed every minute of it. I walked through some of its streets, during the short time I was there. I could no longer remember the charm of its people. With their kindness and simplicity they made me remember old times.

It is curious how such a small place can leave such a big mark on you. The Sierpe, with its simplicity and rural charm, reminded me of the importance of enjoying the simple things in life.

So, if you ever have the opportunity to visit La Sierpe, don't hesitate for a second. Treat yourself to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the calm of this town. I bid you farewell, but not before reminding you that beauty is everywhere, even in the simplest and most forgotten places.
