The Supertrees at Singapore's Gardens By The Bay are a landmark of the city of the future. Their distinctive, modern appearance leaves millions of viewers amazed every year. But what's the story behind them? What is their function? Here are five interesting facts you may not know about the Supertrees:

1. Singapore is a hot and humid city-state. Supertrees provide shade to visitors during their tour at the garden.

2. They are solar-powered. Eleven of the eighteen mechanical trees are equipped with solar voltaic systems that convert sunlight to energy. The Supertrees have two light shows, every evening, in which they use their harvested solar energy.

3. Inspiration for the design of the trees came from the enormous Australian Karri trees and the Forest Spirit of the 1997 Studio Ghibli film, Princess Mononoke.

4. The trees harvest and store rainwater to provide alternative irrigation to the other plants.

5. Several of the trees contain chimneys to exhaust gasses for the sustainable cooling systems of the climate-controlled biomes among the garden.
