Aceh is Known as The “Veranda of Mecca” Province

The province of Aceh is the westernmost province of Indonesia, located on the island of Sumatra. Aceh is one of the regions granted special status by the Indonesian government. Additionally, the city of Aceh is deeply rooted in Islamic law, which shapes daily life there.

One unique aspect of this city is its long-held nickname, “The Veranda of Mecca.” According to the Aceh Government website, this nickname originated with the arrival of Islam in the region. Aceh was the first area where Islam entered Indonesia, and it was home to the first Islamic kingdoms, namely Peureulak and Samudera Pasai.
